So when LTE rolls out, you're saying that all unlimited data users should only have 3G? Since that's what was offered when they signed up?

Yes. This has been common knowledge for years. See how they treated the data plans of users who upgraded from the iphone to the iphone 3g.

Yes. LTE is not 3G, and they have never sold unlimited LTE.

Yes. But when LTE becomes mainstream, people with LTE-capable phones will be able to use it. You think they'll be complaining?

And what about the old users who got unlimited data when only edge was out? Who got a free boost to 3G and eventually to LTE? You think ATT should bill them for that?

I'm not trying to defend ATT or anything, in fact, I never liked them. Just trying to see why a class suit is needed in this case.

You're paying for "unlimited" data and you're getting it. The speed was NEVER unlimited.

Unlimited means full speed without limitations.

Im one of the lucky ones on unlimited and havent received a throttling text, yet. I hover around the 2gb mark, but for a few months I topped out around 4-5gbs because I was traveling so much. If they raised the price on truly unlimited (no throttle) would you pay for it?

AT&T is so slow for me in Atlanta, I'm not sure I could download 2GB in a month if I wanted to. Then again. my highest month in the last 4 years was like 400MB.

According to the MyAt&T app, I used more than that since yesterday. Probably due to music match.

AT&T - turning your iPhone into a Brick!

The basic rate should be 15 GB a month for everyone - and make an advanced rate of 30 GB a month, and an unlimitted plan as the top plan.

What good is all the best tech in your phone if it can't connect?

AT&T - still taking on the world at 300 baud.

It's maybe already been said, but here is my complaint.

First, it's understanding that at some point ATT can't keep the extremely high users grandfathered in on unlimited data. From a company standpoint it doesn't make much sense. Is there really any service that truly does this?

Here is my problem.
First the statistics. I haven't looked into the details their claims about the percentage of users using over 2GB. Are they including non smartphones into this equation that can technically consume data?

Second. Unlimited users are paying $30 per month for data. That same $30 dollars gets users on the tiered data plan 3GB of data. Throttling shouldn't start until, at the very least, 3GB for unlimited users. No exception.

Last but certainly not the least, If ATT decided to bump the data plans from 2GB to 3GB and in effect increasing the rate from $25 to $30, they are effectively saying we are going to charge everyone $5 more for data even though this only "benefits" 5% of the users.

Every day there is another reason to hate wireless service providers here in the US.

Just got throttled at 2GB also

Last Thursday I got the infamous message from AT&T that I'm now in the top 5% of data users. Surprisingly when I checked my usage at that point, it was exactly 2.02GB. My download has been throttled to less than 50kbps while my upload is still showing 600+kbps. Basically my phone is now almost unusable and takes 15 minutes to download email. I'm only halfway through my billing cycle so I have to suffer through this for another 2 weeks until I get my speed back.

My typical usage is only about 2-3GB per month. I'm really upset that I have 4 unlimited iPhone 3G plans, and I'm the only one getting throttled. The other lines are using less than 1.5GB a month but once I hit 2GB, it just goes to a complete stop.

Ridiculous! What if a region's 5% is 1GB?
They are just trying to get more money!

In October, AT&T announced that they would start throttling data usage amongst mobile Unlimited Data Plan users. While AT&T no longer offers an Unlimited Data plan to new customers, many of the original iPhone purchasers are still grandfathered into that plan. Those iPhone users have been able to retain these Unlimited plans, even though AT&T has since moved to a tiered data plan structure.

When AT&T announced their plan to start throttling users, the company said that they would only be throttling the top 5% of users. Early reports of affected users had pointed to 10GB-12GB per month users as the initially affected.

It seems that ceiling has decreased significantly over the past few months, at least for some regions. John Cozen reports that he received his top 5% data usage warning after reaching only 2.1GB of data for January. Cozen contacted AT&T to make sure it wasn't a mistake, and after several back and forth exchanges, it seems clear that it wasn't a mistake. The AT&T representatives seemed to confirm that 2.1GB did fall in the 5% range and the only option to avoid throttling was to move to a tiered plan.

Cozen was understandably upset since AT&T even offers an unthrottled 3GB plan for the same price he is paying at $30 month.

AT&T's top 5% measurement seems to be region-specific, as some users are continuing to see higher than 2GB usage without throttling.

Got Throttled at 2GB!

I am paying for unlimited service and AT&T sent me a letter at 1.6GB that I'm getting close to being throttled. At 2gb, it happened. This is not what I paid for when I signed up for unlimited service. This is crap. The network is slow where I live in New York. They have a lot of nerve.

All I can say is when the iPad 3 comes out, I'll get the Verizon one. And when my eligibility allows, my family will be switching our 4 iPhones to Verizon as well, that is unless Verizon pays for us to put our new iPhone 5s on the family plan and eat the early termination fees for us. ;)

And here I am using up my data reading all of this forum news. How ironic is that?

Unlimited really does suggest "without artificial inhibitors."

Since those of us on grandfathered unlimited are being poked at on a dynamic 5%/2gb boundary, why don't we all just start pulling down 10gb each to raise the threshold for everybody?

There's a simple solution here...

Everyone that has an unlimited plan needs to start using a lot of data. If everyone uses 10GB, that becomes the new baseline for unlimited thus raising the top 5% threshold.

Seriously though, if there has to be a throttling point for unlimited, at minimum it should be the highest tiered amount, i.e. 5GB.... if not more.

Also, tethering should be included across all plans, even unlimited if throttled. It's ridiculous that we have to pay extra to access the data we've paid for no matter how we choose to use it. It's like Ford telling you your monthly truck payment will be higher because you want to tow your boat.

edit: HA! great minds think alike! I took way too long typing this post and seamer posted almost the same thing. Must be a collective wave length we're on!

lol at the guy who said what if i get throttled in a life or death situation? then it's your own damn fault for choosing that plan... at least you won't have an overage charge against your estate.

Most people should realize att unlimited is a bad deal, just get on the tiered plan and be happy. no need to worry about if you're in the top 5% of your area or not. of course that top 5% is going to be less than 3 gb sometimes, otherwise the 3gb/$30 would be the rip off. Seems like normal business pricing to me.

Or you could go to sprint, who claims to be the only truly unlimited plan left, but you should expect some sort of limit as they won't let you max your phones connection 24/7, an unlimited plan like that would have to cost $100+ a month and nobody wants that.

I don't know exactly how att worded their unlimited contracts, but i doubt they're violating their fine print throttling the top 5%.

Ok, good for you. Did you want a medal or something?

Who's to say those of you who think you're somehow invincible to at&t's throttling aren't next on their list? Then you'll be making angry threads on forums everywhere regurgitating the same concerns the throttled people have here.

Did I ask for a medal? Didn't think so. If I ever get throttled am I going to make dozens of angry threads about throttling? Hell no what a waste of time and energy. If I ever get throttled I'll switch to the 5gb $50 plan. I have No problem paying for more.

looks like ill be throttled every month till my contract ends aug. i know all carriers are doing it but hello t-mo again..i hope they get iphone 5/gax S 3:D
