My local AT&T store told me they only had 35 iPhones last year and that they sold out in less than an hour. I'm really hoping they get more this year and that the crowd is smaller.

I plan on stopping by there on Thursday evening to get exact numbers on their inventory.

are you kidding? 100 iphones will be gone by 9:30am. Think about it... People will be waiting in line before 8am, and many of them will be buying more than 1 (ie. family plans). 100 phones should not last until lunchtime on Friday.

100 iPhones X 15 minutes = 25 hours

No?

I don't think many stores are going to get 100 iPhones.

If that's the case there has to be millions on hand already.

A store employee wouldn't know this information either. 100 is a generic number. If anyone knows, it's the manager, and the manager isn't suppose to say how many they are going to have... just a general number. Then if people see that there are over 100 people in line, they won't wait for it and just leave. They rather have people turned away.

They do, apple ordered a CRAP ton. Don't forget -- they know their demand. They aren't gonna pull a wii by building and shipping 1000 at a time lol.
I'll post the article later that proves my point.

I've called multiple of my local AT&T stores. All of them say they won't know how many they will receive until they get them.

hey, just relaying what an at&t rep told me...she could have very well be pulling that number out of her butt... but she said it with confidence and 100-ish sounds like a decent number.

Also keep in mind you can only buy ONE phone per person in line (and phone line too), so somebody can't just go in and buy 5 iPhones for their entire family unless the entire family is standing in line. So I have a feeling you'll be able to find the phone somewhere in most major cities for most of friday.

The fact there hasnt' been much press yet in the mainstream (apple is just starting their commercials) should keep crowds down too.

Uh, Apple stores.. And not all of them get 1000. Only the flag ship stores like Michigan Ave. and in New York. And what, there are like 2000 times as many ATT stores compared to Apple?

Yeah, if you only have 1 PERSON handling iphone orders at a time. Use your head, buddy.

Of course I understand that is a very rough estimation but I was responding to someone that said they would be sold out within 1.5 hours which I think is a far worse estimation.

1.5 hours / 100 iPhones = 54 seconds

We have one AT&T store here on Kauai and no Apple stores. I drove by the AT&T about 4pm last time and it looked like about 15 in line at that time. They did sell out the 30 they got that night. I waited for real reviews before ordering online from the Apple store (and waiting about 3 weeks to get it after ordering 8 hours after it went on sale online).

Most people get off work before 4pm here so that line included people with jobs.

I am guessing that people who have to work will not be in line unless they have the luxury of taking the day off like I do. Plus I also hope that people will not have quite as much of a frenzy to upgrade versus buying the very first one before.

There are maybe 15 AT&T stores in my city, with around 6 or 7 Apple Stores nearby. There should be no rush on Friday, my city is not one to get super hyped up. There might be lines in Los Angeles, but not my neighboring city. :p

You realize not every Att store is going to have iphones right?

What's your point? My point isn't to say every store will have a lot but, every store knows their demand and will be able to match it at launch. If not, then within a few days.

There are 1,800 at&t stores selling iPhones (straight from apple.com).

So 1,800 X 100 = 180,000 iPhones on day one.

Considering they have been making 3G iphones at full production for AT LEAST a month, they may very well have a pretty large supply of stock built up by now. I think it's fair to say at least 50% of the totally supply will go to the United States first (hey, Apple is an American Company, so we're keeping them here first ;)).

Of course some stores might get 30, others might get 1,000. It's hard to say.

All I know is the store I'm going (visiting Vegas this week..) to claims to be getting 100 in, which seems like enough for me :)

Hahahaha, I'm sorry, but what is this math that you're trying to do???

You're still assuming that there's only one person doing iPhone sales. I HIGHLY doubt that there will only be one person at the AT&T store doing the activations.

Only 1 person is allowed in the store at a time.

Exactly.

There is no talk about shortage in the supply chain...analysts have been quoted as saying there will be plenty to go around.

They are in the business to make money, and the only way to do that is if you have product to sell. You can be sure that they will do their best to have plenty on hand to meet demand (which they can guestimate at based on this past year's sales figures).

That doesn't hold for the UK, and presumably several other European countries.
O2 themselves had admitted very tight supply initially, with a weekly restock - and they know the demand is far higher than last time - Less than half of those who registered interest will be able to get one on Friday, if they all went out to buy one.

Maybe you can bring up those quotes for us to check.

Forgive me for applying math in such a humorous way. I did read what the other guy wrote I just thought it brought perspective to the chances of the phone selling out so quickly. Are you saying that you think the iPhones will sell out within 1.5 hours?

I don't think it will be a problem for most. It'll take at least 15 minuts or so per person between the contracts and activation. And, I've never seen anyone at an AT&T store move faster than a snail. Even if they have a full staff they won't sell out first thing in the morning.;)

still debating on white or black, even on 8GB vs. 16GB. what are the pros and cons?

I, like most, will probably get a case of some type, so the color really doesn't matter. Black 8GB with a white case equals white iPhone? In the end saving $100 knowing it will cost me an additional $35+ a month to AT&T is not a bad idea. And who knows how much i'll end up spending in apps.

It seems like it's been so long, and we are almost there. :apple:

They have about 3 million plus ready , if Foxconn numbers are to be believed.

But, 180,000 is about half the number of people that registered interest *in the UK*...

The have a few million, but they're spreading them thin, when you take into account demand.

Better to prepare for demand that'll snap all the first wave of stock up, then just assume you can wander in Friday afternoon or over the weekend and grab one. Apple may well restock well, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the UK, and O2 has admitted as much.

Sounds good, but I'm pretty sure the same was same for the XBOX 360 and the WII and both of those systems experienced mad shortages for a while and the WII is still touch and go. Honestly, I don't think there will be any shortages and from what I've seen is that most consumers will go to the Apple stores which is why I'm going to an AT&T store.

Yeah 3 million sounds like something they may very well have by now. Now I still think 50% will probably go the the United States and 50% will go to the rest of the world (I know, I know, it sucks for Europe..... but I just have a gut feeling at&t and u.s. apple stores will get the majority of them, w/ apple stepping up on their worldwide front within the next few months).

But when did 1st gen iPhones start selling out? March? April? They MAY have been making 3G iPhones for like 5 months now....Even with a worldwide launch, we might have a decent supply that won't sell out like the wii.
