I'm currently jailbroken on iOS 8, iPhone 6, on the UDP with AT&T. Ever since end of April, early May I noticed that I am no longer being throttled after my 5gb cap so I've been using data without a worry. A few weeks ago I started tethering while on the road for two wks but only with my wifi iPad air. I tethered a little over 1Gb (Total data:8Gb) and so far I haven't heard anything from AT&T. I'm using the native hotspot feature on my iPhone.
Has anyone else taken a shot with tethering?

just like speeding, it's alright until they catch you.

Couldn't ATT just restrict tethering to allow only 1 device at a time to access data? Seems like that would prevent the UDP users from using their iPhones as a home's router and running 5+ devices off the same network. The only times I've ever really wanted to use tethering (I'm on UDP) was in order to provide internet to a non-cellular device while traveling. Tethering on a single device is no more taxing on a network than the iPhone is to begin with, so I don't see why it should cost more.

I've been tethering sporadically for years now without them saying anything. But I haven't tried pushing the limits.

Or they can allow 3-5 Gb at least. Att is stingy, " a cheapskate pays twice"

Makes sense. You see people on Verizon using massive GB because they are using their UDP for primary internet. I have Comcast as our home internet so I wouldn't want to use UDP. But I might want to tether a non cellular device like an iPad when traveling.

Lets not push it guys.
At least they're giving us non throttled speeds now.
Maybe we should ask them for a free car:D
I take free car, new one. Why not. :) They should equally distribute 100M FCC fine here for forum users only. We are the most active part of the mobile society. :)

No, they cannot. VZW tried this some years ago and FCC sued them.

VZW has to offer free tethering. Since then VZW started agressive policy on UDP users, no discounts on 2-year upgrade, you loose UDP if you accept subsidy. Customers found a way around, they opened additional 9.99 lines and transfer there upgrade eligibility, but not all of them. Now VZW has 15-22 with smartphones on UDP(not official info, I got it from forum, web sites and estimations). Also you cannot buy and transfer account with UDP on VZW, officially buyer should have at least one line with UDP. With Att you still can buy grandfather UDP for the price around 400-450 on eBay.

Att now is in a split situation:

On the one hand if they cancel UDP, they loose customers(rumors that 40-45 percent on UDP, I think a bit less). FCC pressures them to open hot spots on iphones. Apple also don't want to be in the confrontation with FCC, they can allow 3d party tethering apps, OP is correct here.

On the other hand Att physicly cannot allow official tethering, they are not in good shape with their LTE specrum, most of metro areas as of the end of 2014 had only 10MHz. They try to win some time to convert 1900 3g-HSDPA-HSPA to LTE. More and more regions get now LTE 2(some with aggregation, some without). If Att allows tethering officially, I cancel my FIOS , I put more pressure on Att network, but it will be not only me.

VZW and Att are loosing they "steem" right now, one more year and they come to the point of no return to hold customers anylonger. And this is not only about the internet price, but also roaming, vowifi... I think I know the solution for them, but I leave this part to the guys, who make millions and rule the companies. l don't want to give free advices here and may be I'm wrong since I don't have a full picture here.

I want to say here again, that this the info I heard, not verified, not from official sources, may be it is not a true/real info and may be I'm wrong here. I don't work for any of the telecommunication companies.

Verizon does NOT have to offer free tethering with ULD plans only for those where you pay for a certain amount of data. I have ULD and pay for the privilege of tethering.

The only reason Verizon had to offer free tethering was because the C Block of 700 Mhz spectrum they bought from the government came with a provision that they couldn't restrict or deny the use of customers' devices on that spectrum. Of course this only applies to the non UDPs
Why do you say that this does not apply to the unlimited data plans? I think if you do some research, you will see that this does apply to the UDP's also. Not only can Verizon not stop tethering per the guidelines of the spectrum they bid on, but they also cannot restrict what device you put your LTE Sim card into. This is why people on Verizon unlimited data plans can take the Sim card out of the LTE phone and put it into a MiFi hotspot and have unlimited data for their entire house, road trips, and to share with whoever and whatever devices. Do some research about the LTE spectrum Verizon bid on and the guidelines they have to follow, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Sorry, my fault. I didn't know about Verizon very well. Thanks for correcting me.

Because with some research you will see that it doesn't apply to unlimited plans. What people might or might not do to work around be system or what glitches might or might not exist in the system dissen't change that the guidelines and decisions made about tethering being part of the plans apply only as far as Verizon offering the option at an extra cost when it comes to unlimited data plans.

Is this amateur hour or what? Stop looking at the guidelines that Verizon put on their website. Of course they are going to tell you that tethering isn't supported officially on unlimited data plans and that you need to pay for a separate tether package ...lol. And of course they are going to try to charge you additional money if you want to tether.....it's good for their bottom dollar. Now, be a big boy and pull up the guidelines from the FCC in regards to that 700 MHz C block spectrum and you will see those rules trump whatever Verizon tells you. Again, Verizon can't resrict what device you use, or how you use the data. This is so black-and-white, I don't even know why we are discussing it. The only people who are paying for tethering, are the poor schmucks who don't know any better. I'm not going to carry on a conversation with someone who's that out of tune with what the FCC guidelines are....

Seems like carrying on a conversation with someone resorting to childish name calling which simply undermines anything they might have to say would certainly be a waste of time.

Next time make arrangements to pay your bills on time.
Just because you're out of the country it doesn't excuse you from paying your bills and being charged late fees for not paying on time and a fee to reinstate the account.
That's not at&t's fault or a charge for no reason.
It's your fault.
