If ATT introduces data roll over, everyone would be happier.

This omg!!! I would stop crying if this ever happened... I am on the 15GB a month plan and would love to have some rollover as sometimes I don't use the whole thing..

The ATT/Verizon models have wifi.

I think he meant killing the wifi model and leaving only the cell version.

However I have a feeling the profit margin on the cellular models are much higher then the wifi models so Apple would lose out if they lowered the cost of the cell version to match that of the wifi model.

Or maybe he meant kill the wifi only model....because the other has wifi built in. So since you're allowed to pay month to month.....just pay when you feel like you'll use it away from home. If you're home...use wifi.

Just guessing

I feel so sorry for you (Americans) guys!

Here in UK I pay £15/MONTH (Not day) for all I can "eat" data. I love you Three!

250MB $5... are they serious?!

Shockingly this actually is a good deal for those with LTE iPads that don't come anywhere close to using the data

The "cost" of adding cellular to a tablet had gone down. Meanwhile the "price" of doing so has not.

$5 for 250MB is ridiculous. You can't even watch a single movie on Netflix with 250MB. What garbage.

----------

Because AT&T makes you pay twice to use the same data.

lots of other things to do with that other than watch movies

Hahahaha

When I was on holiday in the UK I bought a "prepay/pay as you go" sim from THREE for 10GBP which gave me 1G for the month. As I was there for 10 days this was fine. It came to about New Zealand dollars $16.

When I was in the USA, I figured I would do the same, however AT&T wanted UD$50 or about NZ$62. Strangely enough I told them it was a rip off and walked out the door. (Never mind the restrictions such as no hot spotting with my iPad etc too)

Yep, when I visited the UK I got a SIM from Three for £10 for 1G of data on a prepay plan.

AT&T wanted US$50 for the same thing, ie about 4 times the price, and then there were all the restrictions (not hot spot sharing with my iPad, etc etc etc)

It seems for once we aren't ripoff Britain. I'm with three too, iphone is £12.90 for unlimited data and 200 mins, rolling 1 month contract. My ipad is £8 for 5gig a month, again a rolling 1 month contract.

This is perfect for me. I can barely use 125MB per month on AT&T due to not being able to get any kind of data signal at home. While I am out, I can get LTE so I find it hard to be able to use even 250MB per month on the smallest plan.

Oh, I get it. You want everything for nothing.

I think you don't get the idea why they are offering it. It's for an occasional user, who may just need access for a day. It's not designed for a heavy user, it's for someone who only needs access now and again and doesn't need a hefty plan with GBs of data they don't use. If you want that, you get the share plan and include your iPad.

----------

It's not for someone who wants to be streaming movies.

If you want more data, get the mobile share plan, add your iPad and done. Not making you pay twice for anything.

I've been working alongside AT&T for the past two years and they are by far the most complicated non progressive thinking Organization to deal with.

This is not a simple plan this just makes a complicated plan more complicated

I think this is actually a nice improvement. I usually buy the 250MB/1 month pass for $14.99 when traveling domestically. The new options are obviously better value. Perhaps I'll even keep the 3-month pass active permanently for just $100 bucks a year instead of only activating it case-by-case when I need it.

I think the $25per quarter plan rocks. For just $100 a year you can keep an iPad Cellular connection active and average 330MB a month. That's plenty for checking e-mail and Web surfing when on the go.

The $5 pass would probably be better if they made it five days instead of just one. Someone traveling could activate it Monday morning and have it through the week. When at home on the weekends they could be using WiFi.

So if someone is on the newfangled AT&T Mobile Share data plan, they should have the ability to tether.

(see additional terms)

So if you are already purchasing a bucket of data, you can use that for your iPad.

Or if you have an unlocked Android phone (I usually only buy Nexus GSM phones), you can tether even with traditional data plans and not pay any extra; still rocking the unlimited 3G data from way back.

But for those who bought an AT&T compatible iPad (or other tablet device) and don't have the Mobile Share plan, this is new plan is a decent alternative for sometime use. Or the rare person who doesn't have any plan with AT&T but has an AT&T compatible iPad.

These plans would be great for people visiting the US for a weekend or for a couple-week vacation.

The $5/day plan would be great for weekend travellers. 250 MB is plenty enough for Google Maps, checking email, posting some pics on InstaTwitFace, do some searching for good local restaurants or gas stations, etc. Many hotels offer free wifi nowadays but there are still some that charge for it, and this competes well with that. Folks might even be able to coordinate based on their itinerary which days they need to buy a $5 pass and which days they can get by with wifi at the hotel, McDonald's, Starbucks, etc.

If I was staying longer than 5 days (say a two-week trip to Florida), I'd get the $25 plan and be all set.

Assuming this also works in US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, this would have been a GREAT option to have when I went on my Caribbean cruise last spring, instead of paying $55 to access the crappy shipboard wifi.

I wouldn't mind tiered data plans at all of if I actually got to keep what I pay for... I.E.... rollover data. If I am buying 1GB every 3 months... and I only use 700 mb of it, the 300 leftover mb that I paid for should be available to me the next month if I need it.

I come from Italy, trust me if I tell you there are counties worst than UK my friend!

PS: I didn't mention that with £15 I also get 300 minutes and 4000 SMS (read infinite)...oh and for Christmas they'll upgrade us to 4G for just...NOTHING!

At the expense of sales. The iPad is all but worthless w/o internet & it would be insane to force people to pay for wireless when @ home.
What?

They would be removing the WiFi only models--nobody is going to remove WiFi from the cellular models. Heck, even AT&T wouldn't want you to do that--they'd rather you put the burden of a multi-gigabyte OS download on your DSL connection when you were at home than more data on their cell network.

Rollover data would be an interesting concept. AT&T only adopted rollover voice minutes after they merged with Cingular. I'm guessing they weren't and are still not a fan of it. I doubt we'll ever see rollover data, at least not with AT&T first.

I didn't mention I get 5000 SMS ;) I think I use about 10 a month since iMessage came out!

so, I may be totally reading this wrong but...is that $5 a day for 250mb?

as in (yes, it would seem stupid to buy it this way but...) $150 for a month of service?

the 1gb over 3 months isn't a bad idea.

I will be taking a road trip soon, I only need data for that day. A one time $5 fee is better then having to buy a whole month...

meanwhile europe is laughing at this. i just got a prepaid rechargable sim with 1GB for 9€ in spain

No kidding. I was just in Ireland and got a PAYG sim for 20euro with unlimited data. UN. LIMITED

----------

I am confused. Doesn't AT&T offer 30-day "DataConnect Pass" plan that can be cancelled at any time? The last time I checked, it costs $14.99 for 250MB, $30 for 3GB, and $50 for 5GB.

I suppose $5/day for 250MB is for those that intends to use data for 4 days or less ($20 for 1GB total), but AT&T is being real stingy but not offering rollover.

ATT: "They're your minutes, so why shouldn't you keep them?"

ATT:"Data is not yours."

This quote from Hackers the movie is pretty relevant:

BLADE: And never again have to pay for a service that would be dirt cheap...

RAZOR: ...IF it weren't run by a bunch of profiteering gluttons!
