In the last 3 months, our house went to barely getting a 3G signal and needing a microcell, to getting 20 mbps LTE in September. In November, it was upgraded to 60 mbps LTE. I really can't complain. All those network upgrades cost money, so does health insurance costs for people who work for at&t. $5 per month increase is very reasonable. And if want to switch to T-mobile, at&t is going to waive the ETF, which means I basically get a iphone 6S for less than half the cost.

this only makes sense if you think the price your charged for data is reasonable. it's not. they gauge you an arm and a leg. they could easily cover that stuff with the profits already made at the current price. lets not forget the tax money they get for infrastructure upgrades that they squander either

Your point is absolutely correct. I am bummed though as I kept considering T-Mobile and now that they've made unlimited more expensive, I really don't have a reason to move there, I would have nearly the same bill and lose subsidy phones.

I sure wish I had switched before the unlimited hike.

i switched about two years ago and i couldn't be happier. since then they have added tons of great useful features, like free unlimited 2g and sms in many foreign countries! and they have had wifi calling for almost a year now, as opposed to att who just recently implemented the feature...

i don't know if you have, but you should take a look at this page: http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans.html
their rates are still far better than att, so unless you absolutely need unlimited data - it's still a great option. keep in mind that their plans include unlimited minutes and sms!

When Verizon raised the rates for its unlimited data customers by $20 per month, it was posted under the iOS blog page. How often do you pull up the iOS blog page on MacRumors? I am guessing much less than you check the front page. It really cut down on the traffic to the thread to discuss the issue. Even today that thread is only 9 pages long. I expect this one to be up to 20 pages by this time tomorrow.

But when AT&T raised its rates by a mere $5 and suddenly THAT is front page news. This article should have been posted under the iOS blog just like the Verizon one. I mean if a $20 price increase isn't front page newsworthy, why is a $5 price increase?
VZW with 20 dollars also was on the front page. I have the same question, why people hate Att,, but like t-mo?

Why At&t just followed Verizon's UDP increase, but not followed Verizon's new international roaming plan?

Why do so many people care? Honestly, how much data do you use?

If your in a contract they can't raise it, at least thats what I was told last night and called back to verify , as far as data used, for me 7 to 9 GB per month

As far as who cares ? Allot of people care when you let corporate GREED run your life. They probably need money for there Dish investment. All new satellite dish will have the large AT&T logo on them, that'll look nice in your yard or on your roof

Does anyone still use ATT? I a a physician, need to be connected everywhere. I switched to T-mobile and have not looked back. I had ATT form 1999 - 2014. Particularly happy to no longer getting a big surprise roaming crap form overseas travel Never could get ATT to give me an honest answer about coverage, and bogus plans.

I would think a physician with plenty of years of schooling would have better grammar skills.

Agree with you JohnStrass. Are you located in a major city? I have ATT but live an hour outside of NYC with less dense coverage. Is your coverage with T Mobile good when you travel?

I'm having a hard time getting upset about this. I currently have a pair of iphones with unlimited data, some minutes and some sms messages for around $129, and as part of the deal we got to upgrade the phones to 6s with the old $200/300/400 pricing, and no AT&T Next monthly fees on top, or bandwidth throttling at some arbitrary cutpoint.

This isn't a big enough change to get me to jump ship.

Some people really do use huge amounts. I've heard 10GB/week. If you're streaming lots of movies/music, and the iPad is essentially your only Internet device, no point in paying for a wired/WiFi service (>$40/mo) when you can have practically unlimited wireless for $35.

Some people (me) find a completely different mindset when using unlimited vs capped service. Concern about "how much data will this chew up?" is a constant nag, while "use whatever you want" is very comforting. It's not so much about going over as not having to ever think about going over.

I don't know much about US phone contracts but surely all the fixed term contracts were up a long time ago so wouldn't be subject to early termination fees anyway?
At the end of most US wireless contracts (like this), you have the option of buying a new iPhone at subsidized rates (US$199)+ as long as you renew the contract for another term (2 years, in this case).

If the company wants to increase profit margins to appease stock holders why can't the CEO decrease his salary?
IMO, decreasing his salary to $0 won't affect anything. His salary represents 0.00002000 of the revenue.

If AT&T took his entire salary and spread it (as a credit) to each customers bill, each customer would get a 2c credit. Once a year.

Capped data plans started because of people who abused the unlimited service in the past.

Hike it up more so they suffer like the rest of us.

They were not abused... It was a stupid move on ATT and other carriers part. The word unlimited means and was laid out by them to mean "all you can eat." They didn't realize the what they had done only until after they saw what unlimited data would do to their networks.

Someone is just bitter they didn't get their hands on it before they dropped it the plan.

I pay the equivilent of $29 for unlimited data, 300 minutes and 5000 texts. I still don't get why wireless service in the US is so expensive.

Much bigger country, with different requirements for infrastructure costs.
They also are compensating for losing all the landline phones.
Plus more business travelers with huge data usage.

None of them anticipated that the landline rug would be pulled out from under them
that fast. So, they are probably still stuck in that mentality.

Just a few things to consider.

All in all my base cell phone costs are now even with landline costs. (Which is why I don't do landline any more)
There are plenty of options to get rid of landline phone charges. (Magicjack, Puretalk etc,)

I don't know much about US phone contracts but surely all the fixed term contracts were up a long time ago so wouldn't be subject to early termination fees anyway?

Apparently they silently kept contracts and subsidies ONLY For the factions of customers still on them whom refused the new standard non contract model or Installment plan model, So a slim customer base do have contracts for their i5S i6 i5C 6+ 6S or 6S+

Oh you know ATT is ( apparently)
The biggest evil in Telecom-Verse for increasing by the smallest margins the least often and being the last holdout.

T-Mobile is God
ATT is the spawn of Satan blah blah blah
Monopoly this monopoly that

And/or probably 1 of ATT's competitors is in MR's pockets or has infiltrated MR Staff lol

So what was the point of me having a contract if they can just change the rules?

To keep you as a customer as long as possible. Every carrier does that somehow lol

Switch to Sprint! I've had them all. Heres the breakdown.
Verizon has strong coverage, but awful voice quality, awful cust service, and the worst prices ever that rape your wallet.
ATT has strong coverage, good voice quality, the absolute WORST cust service, and awful pricing.
T-Mobile has decent coverage, great voice quality, great cust service, the absolute cheapest pricing.

And finally, my sweet spot. SPRINT: Great Coverage, good voice quality, great cust service, and great pricing (sometimes even cheaper then T-Mobile depending on what plan options you have)

Anyone know when the next tmobile uncarrier "gift" is supposed to be announced? would be curious what they do with att.

I tried tmobile's coverage two years ago (smart promotion on their part), but it just wasn't nearly as good as att.
