So this works out to about $26 a month in credit from AT&T for the trade in right?

This should cover almost all of the monthly cost of the iPhone 12 Pro 256 upgrade.

I've been with AT&T for a decade and keeps my phones for 2+ years at a time. Seems like a no brainer unless I'm missing something.....?

Exactly. It’s going to be like $7 or $11 for the 128 or 256gb pro.

I’m on a 64gb x and I’m not out of space. Dunno if I’d ever even have to think about space on 128. But for $4 month more??? I dunno.

No. I have a very reliable AT&T source that is on top of these things. Once you trade the phone in, the credits go away. AT&T has a good rule of thumb for this:

If you maintain possession of the old phone, you keep the credits. If you hypothetically traded in a phone at the 12 or 15 month mark, you’d lose the remainder of the credits you are owed.

In order to truly get $800 off, you’d need to keep that 12 Pro for the entire Next agreement which are all 30 months.

Believe me or don’t, but this is 100% the way it works with AT&T.
You need a new reliable source.

The credits are tied to keeping the line active for 30 months. They don’t care what you do with the phone. Send it to China or drop it in the bottom of a lake.

Keep that same line active, and you’ll see 30 months of a $26.67 iPhone device charge on your bill (plus any amount above a $799 model, divided by 30), and a corresponding $26.67 credit on that same line. For 30 months.

So just to share my experience today in case anyone else is in the same boat...

I’m currently already on an unlimited plan with AT&T (Unlimited & More), so I called AT&T this afternoon to see if my plan would be eligible for this deal. Turns out I’m in a grandfathered plan, and it’s not eligible for the $800 credit (for trading in my iPhone X). I would need to switch to one of their newer unlimited plans in order to take advantage of the deal. BUT, my grandfathered unlimited plan does not include 5G access, so if I want 5G access on my new 5G iPhone 12 I would need to change my plan anyways...

I’ve been with AT&T since the first iPhone, and I tend to keep my phones for longer than I used to, so this seems like a no brainer to me.

Can anyone confirm this from AT&T? I would assume this to be the case, they should not care what I do with the phone even if I sell it the next day as long as I have the line active for 30 months.

I Don’t think Apple would allow this deal if AT&T prevented all their customers from upgrading before 30 months to a new phone.

So which AT&T plan did you switch too? I'm still on my grandfathered unlimited plan as well which doesn't even seem like the best deal anymore. Did you switch to an updated unlimited plan in order to take advantage of the $800 credit?

Unlimited Extra I think it’s called. The next tier up (Unlimited Elite) comes with HBOMax, more hotspot data and more “premium” unthrottled data for like $10 more, but I just don’t need those extras. Yet, lol.

Got it! Thank you!

The mentioned you'd have no issues taking advantage of the $800 credit now that you've altered your plan?

I feel so reluctant to give up my 10 year old plan but It's literally more expensive now that the Unlimited Standard plan.

I get that. But remember the older plans might not support 5G. And yeah, it sounded like I was good to go for the $800 credit, but I’m definitely going to be giving them another call tomorrow or Thursday just to confirm lol

Is there somewhere you can look on the ATT site to see which plans support 5G or did you have to call in to figure this out?

Please stop spreading misinformation. You are going to cost a lot of people money. I can promise you that if you do this, and you trade the phone back into AT&T, your credits will cease.

I didn’t know about my existing plan not having 5G until I called. If you go to the AT&T page and look at upgrade options, it looks like all the new plans support 5G. I have no idea about other grandfathered plans.

I Don’t think Apple would allow this deal if AT&T prevented all their customers from upgrading before 30 months to a new phone.

Nothing is preventing you from upgrading before 30 months, however you'll need to pay off the balance of the phone in order to upgrade via a promotional offer. You can of course buy any new/different phone from any source and use it on that account, but you won't be getting a promotional offer from AT&T until the device is paid for, or the 30 months is up.

Please stop spreading misinformation. You are going to cost a lot of people money. I can promise you that if you do this, and you trade the phone back into AT&T, your credits will cease.

The LINE will cease to receive credits if you perform a trade-in/upgrade associated with that LINE. The device itself has nothing to do with it.

Every time you make a transaction like initiate a trade-in or upgrade, you need to associate it with a line, i.e. such a line is "upgrade eligible". In other words, if you take advantage of this offer in 2020, you can't use the same line to do this again in 2021 (i.e. <30 months) and still expect to receive the credits, you have to pay the first phone off in full before initiating another trade-in/upgrade on the line. Any of the remaining 30 credits will cease, because you'll be taking advantage of another trade-in/upgrade offer.

The actual device itself has nothing to do with receiving credits. The device can immediately be sold, or broken, given away, etc. AT&T does not care, and the credits will remain. You are of course still responsible for paying for the amount of the phone, regardless of how many payments/amount are left.

Is there somewhere you can look on the ATT site to see which plans support 5G or did you have to call in to figure this out?

Only the 3 newest plans (Unlimited Starter, Extra, Elite) support 5G.

How do these compare to Unlimited Data Plus that was offered a few years ago?
Seems Starter + extra are both 'SD video' - is this enforced since these are 5G plans? Seems sort of a waste to have 5G and only be able to stream in SD instead of HD.

Also not clear that Extra has 50GB of 'premium data' whereas Starter has no stipulations at all, but again both 5G plans.

Confusing.

Seems UDP (plus plan) -> Unlimited Extra is the most logical migration, right? Probably not going to shift until at least one of us in the family is on a 5G iPhone, but this kinda stinks having to fuss with plans yet again. Still, fwiw it does seem cheaper overall by maybe like $25

($115 base + $20 access fee x 3 Lines of $175 vs what appears $50 flat per line x 3)

worth migrating even before having a 5g device?

After review, seems to be a great deal. I’m moving from an iPhone X. Even if I upgrade my phone after 24 months I’ll still get $640 in credit versus the 200 something that Apple offers me.

I don’t understand why people are so upset at AT&T over this. They’re providing a good service in exchange for a commitment to stay with them as a carrier. Why would they give you $800 to not use their service?
Same here....this is the first time I've not updated every 2 years, as I have the "X".....and it's hard to turn down essentially getting a free phone.....

I just switched plans yesterday....and the new plan (elite) is actually $35 CHEAPER than my grandfathered plan, has 100 gb of data usage before throttling back (instead of 22 gb) and 30 gb of hotspot, instead of 10 gb per phone. Should have upgraded sooner....

Keep in mind, there is no guaranty of how often you'll be using the 5G network, vs. 4G. So in regards to streaming HD video, you might very well indeed be on the 4G network, 99% of the time (extreme example!). And network resources can be limited in periods of heavy activity, which is why there is an extra charge for the opportunity to stream HD. Also, you don't need a 5G device to take advantage of the new plans. So you could very well keep your non-5G phone for years, and stream HD video via the LTE network. <-Assuming you have the Elite plan for said device.

Also not clear that Extra has 50GB of 'premium data' whereas Starter has no stipulations at all, but again both 5G plans.

Confusing.

Premium data means that traffic (either 50GB or 100GB per line, per month) will be given higher priority if/when the network is busy. Starter plan has no Premium data guaranty, at all.

Everyone's needs are different :) Keeping in mind that the new Unlimited Your Way option means every line on these new Unlimited family plans can have a different level of service/price. A good thing!

This is an increasingly tempting deal but

don’t wanna trade in my se2 .. it would qualify being unlocked and paid outright the $250 from the start att deal right ?

I’d have to hunt down a used iPhone 8 unlocked in good standing otherwise

Has anyone been able to confirm with AT&T that the offer is $800 for any iPhone 8 or newer or if it's tiered? The lack of information about this so close to preorder is surprising (kind of).

Yes, as stated before, any iPhone 8 or newer and effectively get you a free iPhone 12 up to 799. As long as the phone is in good working order.

that’s what the terms and conditions say. The “up to“part refers to your credits cannot exceed the price of the phone. So you’re not getting 799 if you bought a mini.

As someone who has the grandfathered unlimited plan, I wanted to get some clarification about some of the things.

1. My wife and I each have an iPhone XR that we would trade in that are both in fine shape. Even though the terms are a bit confusing, am I understanding it correctly that we could each trade those in for the $799 credit towards either a 12 or a 12 pro?

2. Those would be bill credits prorated over 30 months. So if we decided to trade in again after 24 months, we would need to pay off the existing balance on the iPhone 12's (minus that last 6 months of credits, that we would lose by trading in early)?

3. As far as phone/data plans, what does Premium Unlimited mean? We use about 20GB of data every month.

4. Since I am on the grandfathered data plan, I would assume also, that I would need to upgrade to a new Unlimited plan. We only have two lines, so if I chose one of the plans that BeatCrazy listed above, I would be ok? Also, I noticed that they have a 25% discount for teachers. Does anyone know if I could get that as well as the iPhone bill credits?

Thanks everyone for the help!

1. Correct
2. Correct

4. Please check with AT&T directly to see if your specific FAN discount is eligible to be combined with a new Unlimited plan.

As always, please check AT&T's T&Cs carefully in order to understand how your particular situation may be impacted.

BeatCrazy, thanks for the confirmation/info!

So, last question (for now), if we were going to take advantage of the ATT offer, we would go ahead and preorder Friday morning via Apple? I would be able to do multiple lines?

My wife is a teacher. It allowed us $10 off each line per month, but only on the most expensive plan. You can mix and match too so each line doesn’t have to have the most expensive elite plan.
