So, last question (for now), if we were going to take advantage of the ATT offer, we would go ahead and preorder Friday morning via Apple? I would be able to do multiple lines?
You need to buy it through AT&T, not Apple.

I did find this on ATT.com

False... this year you can do it directly from Apple.

Sorry - I have not read through the entire thread. Will we have the option to pay the $5 extra to upgrade after you've hit the 50% mark, knowing that you will lose the remaining credits, but this would still be advantageous...

My wife is a teacher. It allowed us $10 off each line per month, but only on the most expensive plan. You can mix and match too so each line doesn’t have to have the most expensive elite plan.

I thought it was just 25% off for the teachers discount? My wife is a teacher and that's what I found when I looked into it a few weeks ago... No?

Yes. From here:

Requires upgrade of an existing line (or activation of a new line in stores) and purchase of a new iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max on qualifying 30 month 0% APR installment plan, subject to carrier credit qualification. If buying on the AT&T Installment Plan with Next Up, customer is responsible and will not receive any credits for an additional $5/mo. for the Next Up upgrade feature. $0 down for well-qualified customers only, or down payment may be required and depends on a variety of factors. Interesting (your graphic was from last year btw).

What changed this year to let you do it from Apple? I am assuming you have to still do the upgrade through Apple (identify which line)?

Not saying you are wrong, but what tells you that through Apple is ok this year? EDIT: I see it on the Apple website now. That is interesting!

Awesome, thanks. I did a dummy booking on an 11 via the AT&T website and it now allows you to do the $5 upcharge with the $800 offer.

It's a bit of a gamble for me since I owe $256 on my XS Max that I need to pay in full, but it may be worth the risk.

From the ATT site info posted earlier,
"Requires upgrade of an existing line (or activation of a new line in stores)"
Both of my lines are already on Unlimited Elite. So does this mean I can't get the deal? If not that is f***ing stupid.

Of course not. Upgrade means your line needs to be in an upgrade status.

Of course you can. You quoted the good part :) "upgrade an existing line". The line has to be eligible for an upgrade, of course. You can check the status in the MyATT app.

I am just unclear on if they meant upgrading the phone or the line, because it says line, not phone. The devil is in the details, they should say upgrade phone on an existing line, not the shady way they worded it.

FWIW, I chatted with AT&T this morning and the rep said that you can move your plan to unlimited beforehand and still get the deal. As a few other posters have said, the upgrade eligibility clause is referring to the eligibility of your line to upgrade the device attached to it, as opposed to the plan.

I can see how that could be confusing.

That's good to know then, thanks. I have unfortunately had to spend actual DAYS on the phone with them trying to get them to fix things that they messed up, so I want to make sure I understand things going in. Though the last time I had to deal with them they waived $400 dollars off the price of my Series 5 watch ;).

Apple or AT&T. Yes, you can do multiple lines.

I have 2 lines that show upgrade available but still has a contract date of 12/16/20 (retintions offer). Can I use this offer on them or do I have to wait and hope offer is still good in December?

Sorry I’m not sure exactly what the % is. I just went on their website and previewed the new plans. It shows you exactly what it cost per line compared to your old plan. The new plans were cheaper for us so we switched.

It's a very good deal, and it's available to existing customers as well as new users, which is great (AT&T user here). But, a couple of caveats: 1) it's over 30 months, not 24 (Verizon's deals are over 24 months). So the per-month isn't as high as it seems. 2) it's only available on certain AT&T plans. I haven't called to find out which ones yet… but I'm sure it's going to be unlimited, and maybe only certain unlimited plans. I'm currently on an older family share plan with plenty of data and would have to go to a more expensive unlimited plan to get this.
There ya go! That’s the catch. You have go on an unlimited plan.

So I have $250 remaining on my XS. AT&T is giving me the option to upgrade but turn it in with no credit. But couldn't I also pay off phone, and then trade in for an even bigger credit?

Do we know what the exact credit is for each model of phone?

Im already on the unlimited plan and this fine print concerns me...

“Requires upgrade of an existing line (or activation of a new line in stores)”

Do I have to upgrade my plan? What if I have the top tier one?

Also, will I be able to buy a the 256 gb phone? or just 64?

You would get $800 in credit, but you need to pay the $250 balance off in full to be eligible. Otherwise you're just doing a standard trade-in at the $300ish value.

You don't have to upgrade your plan. "Upgrade an existing line" means a device on such line.

You can buy any variation, and get up to $800 discount.

It‘s $800 for any iPhone 8 or newer.

this would let us upgrade. after spending months getting att to give us credit for returned phones we will never do the monthly payments. we spend 20 or more hours on the phone trying to get them to actually accept that they had our returned phones they even showed they were returned and they still charged us. wait you have to mail in the phone no way it is way too risky.
