Interesting.. I have a 3GS but am currently eligible for an upgrade. Bought a 1st Gen iPhone on launch day way back when, and then upgraded to a 3GS last summer with the discounted price. Not sure why I am eligible again so soon, but I'm not gonna ask any questions.

why is that? I'm eligible for upgrade on June 21st, like others in the article. I have a 3GS.

Could this be because AT&T wants you to go ahead and lock in on another 2 yr contract so you won't jump ship to the VZW iphone that would come out later in the year?

I dialed *NEW# like a nice poster recommended, this is what I got back in an SMS:

"A full discount on a standard handset or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 11/19/2010. We can offer you a a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please visit a participating iPhone sales location for pricing on this offer."

I pay over $100 each month, but some of that is taxes, so I suspect the $100 figure is _before_ taxes.

Oops, forgot to mention this is on a 3GS bought on launch day.

'standard' upgrade

You should all be looking for this:

As a valued AT&T customer, you may be eligible for a standard upgrade on this line, with reduced equipment pricing when signing a 2-year commitment. Click 'Upgrade Eligibility' to view your upgrade options.

"Standard" is the key word. Without it, you will have reduced pricing but it won't be the price that apple advertises everywhere.

I am so glad I didn't upgrade to the 3GS.

i signed up for a family plan with the 3g and a dumb phone back in october of '08. paid $100 a month with FAN discount, i checked my eligibility 3 months ago and was good for an upgrade on 6/2/10.

i was surprised cause i read the amount per month per line has to be $100 or over to get an early upgrade. i'm not complaining but i think att is not consistence with their policy.

on that note, can't wait till the iphone hd drops. i am ready!

ATT is letting people who pay over $100 a month get the new iPhone with subsidy after only about 12 months with the 3GS. Many others (including me) will be eligible well before there 2 year contract is up. ATT wants you to sign a new contract before your original 2 year contract is up and you can sign with any other carrier. They are clever and it will probably work with me.

wow interesting

popped into my AT&T account just now and saw this on the "upgrade" tab:

"iPhone Upgrade
You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/07/2010"

I purchased my 3G on 10 January 2009. If true, then I'll gladly upgrade to the new iPhone when it becomes available.

early upgrade

if the upgrade date has moved up from November to June that probably means that AT&T wants to retain you as a customer and that the iPhone will launch on another carrier at a date after 6/21 and before 11/5/10. otherwise AT&T would be throwing money out the window.

It says I'm not eligible until 02/2011 and I got a 3GS. I've got 2. I pre-ordered the 3GS as soon as it was available. HAHAHAHAHA.

I'm getting the rip off. These other guys around here are bragging about having a 06/2010 date. How did you pull that off?

You're probably on something like a $75/month plan on the 3GS's line. If you were on a $100/month plan, then by June you would have paid AT&T around 12*25 = $300 more, and thus likely be eligible for the subsidized $200 or $400 discount 6 months, or so, earlier.

With the 3G, I opted to not pay AT&T the extra $25/month over the 1st year of the plan (since I don't use that many minutes on that phone), and thus ended up paying $300 less for the plan, but $200 more for the 3GS ($499 instead of $299), 12 months later, on the same line.

So, unless you actually use all those minutes/messages, it might be a better deal to not get the earlier upgrade pricing. Unless the price diff is $400 for the next annual upgrade.

I bought the 1st gen iPhone on launch day and the 3GS on it's launch with a discount. *639# returns that I'm eligible to upgrade on 02/13/2011.

My bill is $120 a month.

iPhone on Verizon +
HTC Incredible on Verizon +
EVO on Sprint =
AT&T makes a bundle on early termination fees this summer.

BUH BYE!

I'm at 6/20.

iPhone won't be available during WWDC unless ATT let's us upgrade a couple of weeks early.

I have a 3G that was bought in the middle of it's cycle, but I can't upgrade until August, which will be 20 months after I received it.

Can someone please explain what all this $99 talk is about? If you spend that much each month, you're eligible for an earlier upgrade? And unless I'm not understanding this correctly, why isn't the upgrade price for the phone simply $199?

AT&T allows upgrades at a subsidized price after 12 months if you spend greater than $99(per month) per line on your plan.

when you upgrade to a new phone do you also have to pay that annoying $29 reactivation fee or new phone fee?

I kind of like the "The More you spend, the earlier you are elegible" policy; sounds fair. Here in Japan, it's 2 years no matter what.

Only offered a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price on 11/20/2010. Bought an iPhone 3GS on launch day as a brand new AT&T customer. I don't much care, just thought I'd share. :) If I like the new iPhone enough, I'll sell my 3GS and move to the new hotness.

Bought an HTC Incredible on Verizon instead

I'm tired of AT&T playing with my eligibility date. Originally they said last November, but they kept moving it farther out as the date approached.

I've lived without decent cell phone coverage for almost 2 years. Finally couldn't stand it. Moved to the Incredible on Verizon. I forgot what its like to have coverage everywhere. And even 3G coverage everywhere. The phone is awesome fast compared to my iPhone 3G, but the hardware and overall software experience is lower quality in many subtle ways. Cutting corners everywhere, lots of things almost work or just barely good enough. But I can deal with that. I like that Android allows me to install whatever apps I want. I don't want Apple or anyone filtering my apps that way.
