As most of you should know, AT&T is attempting to crack down on people who tether against their rules. (see http://www.9to5mac.com/56804/att-go...jailbreak-to-avoid-exorbitant-tethering-fees/ for reference)

There have been some reports of people receiving this text/email even if they don't participate in this activity. So.... Let's start a Poll!!! This should hopefully clear up the accuracy of these texts...

Not yet, but I use it for an hour a month at most, and only to browse / check email. I probably use 15-20 meg, and I have an "unlimited" account. I refuse to pay an additional $20 a month for that little usage...

I may not be on the radar at this time.

I'm JB and use PDAnet to tether. My reason to tether is only for my iPad. And I've only used it a handful of times so I haven't gotten a text.

I'll be paying attention to what's going on with this and if there's a way around it. My home ISP doesn't charge per computer so I'm not supporting my wireless ISP pulling that.

So far only one person has gotten a text or email... Hmmm....

And here's something I wonder. I haven't jail broken and/or used tethering. If I jailbreak and tether after that march 27 date, would AT&T immediately start charging me(assuming they can tell) or would they have to email and give me a few weeks notice?

I just use it very infrequently and no text. I actually used it today for about a half hour to see if I'd get one. I just hear about people who have high data usage getting the text. I rarely go over 3GB a month.

Yes on text, email

Received both text and email, I jailB , use mywifi, Mostly use my iPhone , watch netflix on iPhone alot but have used on iPad with teether

I havent tethered since the 11th when I got a 3g ipad 2 instead of my wifi. by I tethered 5 days a week every week before the 11th and no text/email. of course Its just web surfing so its not like im streaming videos or anything over it. its basically the same stuff id do on my phone just easier to read on the bigger screen. so maybe their only going after users that use a ton of data.

I'm jailbroken running MyWi but I use it at the most once a month. Only when I need to take my iPad outside the home. So I barely crack on any usage. Some are saying AT&T might be only tracking high usage users with the unlimited Data plans.

jailbroken...tether... almost 200GB of data most recent cycle...

no letter no text...

I had 24 GB last month
Per what I see you will...................:(

Hmm I've been tethering in past but not since the new Iphone4

I don't think it matters when just if they flag you.

Yeah I'm confused on these emails/texts as well. I usually used just a couple hundred mb's a month as well except for back in February when I used as my primary connection for a month and used 20GB's. My normal data usage has usually been under 2GB's. No letter either.

jailbroken and I don't tether often but I do so I answered yes. No letter.

I Use a ton of data!!!

I have a very boring uninteresting job and constantly stream Netflix or YouTube. I use about 20 gb/ month. I have an iPhone 4 on 4.2 ( now 4.3) with unlimited data. I have never tether, although I have been thinking about it. I have never been contacted by att. Don't know if this helps...

I tether frequently and haven't received a text or email. However, I only go through 2-3 GB per month (on the unlimited plan) and supposedly AT&T is focusing on heavy users from what I've read here and elsewhere.

It'll be interesting to see if AT&T is truly cracking down on tethering period, or just mainly trying to get rid of the heavy unlimited users using tethering as an excuse to change their contracts.

I rarely use MyWi... and because of that, I won't get a text/email. I used 4GBs between December and Now. So I'm not worried at all. I mean even if they could tell I was tethering... Why should I pay for 4GBs a month.. when I only used 4GBs since December. =P

Oops. Accidentally selected the wrong answer.

I'm not jailbroken, I don't tether, & I haven't received an email.

I probably won't tether unless I can get a tethering plan + unlimited, which is unlikely.

you might want to re-think that. There have been people using <2GB a month that got the message.

To the poll Im jailbroken and tether. use 2-4GB a month and no message.

Just got the email today. My usage did spike in Feb(15GB) due to netflix and pandora.
Whats the best way to reply to ATT email to contact them.
I think I may move to Clear wireless for my tethering needs. Any thoughts?

What ?????? It says they would automatically enroll me after april 16 ? What what o_O I have unlimeted plan btw.

Tethering on unlimited

I too received an email yesterday. I have a jailbroken phone and tether. Has anyone heard of a way to fight AT&T? From my understanding, they have no right to change your policy without your permission. As long as the account is in good standing (not late or disconnected). The problem comes down to the fact that AT&T was very shortsighted with the unlimited data plans. They didn't consider people could use third party software to tether. Unlimited should be exactly that "UNLIMITED"! I have been paying way too much for way too long just to keep my grandfathered unlimited plans.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

You really cannot fight it. You signed the contract stating that you would not tether as part of your unlimited data. Best thing you could do is use the changing in your contract terms to get out without paying an ETF.

Edit: AT&T and Verizon also make changes to their cell phone policy all the time, that's why they give users 30 days to cancel out of their contract without paying a fee when a policy change is implemented. After the 30 days, if you have not cancelled you're automatically opted in and agreeing to the change of terms.
