I will check out my TOS but I'm pretty sure it says nothing about tethering. Because tethering wasn't even a thought at that time.

" Furthermore, plans (unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to computer accessories, BLUETOOTH® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose"

"Accordingly, AT&T reserves the right to (i) deny, disconnect, modify and/or terminate Service, without notice, to anyone it believes is using the Service in any manner prohibited or whose usage adversely impacts its wireless network or service levels or hinders access to its wireless network, including without limitation, after a significant period of inactivity or after sessions of excessive usage and (ii) otherwise protect its wireless network from harm, compromised capacity or degradation in performance, which may impact legitimate data flows."

Ok, is there a solution to this?, My bro recieved the msg, he haves the Unlimited Plan

1.) Thanks for the updates from those who got this yesterday, I didn't know there had been a new volley of these texts/emails, and a new date (April 16 it appears) for the recent catches.

2.) I've heard that for the time being people have been having a great deal of luck calling AT&T and playing dumb. Tell them that you don't tether and that you didn't even know it was possible to do without a tethering plan (or that you don't know what tethering is), and claim to use a lot of Netflix/Pandora/YouTube, etc over 3G.

Just got the email this morning, yes I'm JB and tether with mywi, this is my first cycle. I used 5gb. Does calling up and saying nexflix/pabdora still work?

Thats what I did, but it didnt seem to matter. The rep I spoke to kept saying the "system" has determined you tether. She was polite enough, but never wavered off the path that I was tethering. I did ask for some written proof, so I could determine the dates and times when I was tethering. I was put on hold, then she came back and said they don't offer that information.

So i figure I will just not tether.

I was using MYWI and racked up about 15GB in February using Netflix.

So did they add a new tethering plan to your contract or did they just slap you on the wrist? I think that's what most people are afraid of at the moment. I got the message and I only had about 6 gigs used on the month, I just told them that I watched Netflix and they didn't do anything (yet).

Sorry...NO plan changes. Still on unlimited, but she did say that if I didnt call I would have been automatically switched.

I have heard of them changing people automatically so i'm gonna give them a call and chill on the tethering. Luckily I didn't get that wifi only iPad 2 like I planned.

just got the email saying please update my plan by april 30th if i wish to continue to tether

im calling now to let them know if they wish to change my plan they can go ahead and cancel my contract as well..

ihonda

How much data usage do you use? Are you tethering? Using which app?

mywi, months (nov/dec) ago i was doing 20-35gb, but past 2 months its been under 6gb each month.. they claim the email is going out to high data users.. idk if i believe it

Soo... I just got off the phone with them.

I basically received the email today, notifying me to call them before the 30th of April.

I used the netflix/pandora excuse and they didn't buy it, stating tethering. I can't really argue =/ I do tether but at most maybe 100-150mb when I'm on the road but thats it. The rest is from Pandora and Netflix at the Gym.

They told me as long as I don't tether from now on, I will no longer be subject to have my account changed. I asked them if I go say 10GB on a month using netflix/pandora/youtube they told me I won't receive any emails because I'm not tethering. Blah blah blah. Oh well. Time to delete MyWi now =/ I rather not risk it. So yeah she told me I'm keeping my Unlimited Data.

So far my data usage for this month is 5GB.

Ya I have to agree. I stopped also, maybe ill get Clear.
Be nice if they made just a tablet size touch screen (like ipad) where we could just mirror the iphone to AND use the touch feature to work the iphone.

OR would be cool if we could use an HDMI connector to link up to the ipad and just use the screen NOT tether.

Just gave them a call so they would not change my plan. The rep kept saying so you are not tethering? And I said yes, he asked me like 3 times. Then he said he'll put a note in my account that I was not tethering. I think he knew I was lying tho. At least I got my $20 worth out of MyWi i'm done tethering for now unless it can be undetected.

Lucky...the rep I talked to kept telling me that she didn't care and they were going to charge anyway after the 30th.

I'm at 13gb, only about 20mb of that tethering, and no text/email... hopefully it'll stay that way.

Still for some reason in the back of my mind I believe I will get an email for using netflix/pandora even if I go over 5Gb or so. I have stopped tethering so hopefully they will not give me crap for using netflix and what not.

Question.

If I use mywi and only plan tether to my wifi iPad. And I haabe atomic browser on the iPad set to identify the browser as "an iPhone safari browser"

Will ATT be able to tell I am tethering on the iPad when atomic is tricking websites to identify it as an iPhone browser?

Just got it this morning. no email

I got the "we're taking your unlimited data plan no matter what you say" email and text message today. So in response, I just placed my order for a Verizon iPhone, transferred my number and told AT&T to suck it.

What a defeated, weak minded, weak network oriented company.

Long overdue.

Seriously considering this as well.

My slightly educated guess is that the whole "We're able to detect if you're using MyWi" thing is only on higher firmwares, maybe 4.0 and above? Does anyone else think so too?

My 3GS is on 3.1.3, and it's not going any higher. I haven't yet received an email or text, but I don't use it as much as I did last year. Maybe I'm just jinxing myself :D

Got the e-mail yesterday as well. I tethered maybe once every few weeks. My data usage is always within 4-5GB - sometimes without tethering at all. I use Pandora at work for 8 hours a day, all the time. I also use it in the car through my AUX port as my replacement to a radio, so...yeah. They somehow detect you are doing it without high data usage.
