I Called AT&T today and they told me Connecting my phone to my TV and watching Netflix is considered Tethering?

WTF?

bawstun

were you using mywi?

Yes I was.

I sent them an e-mail playing stupid, I told them I had no idea what tethering was and I did "NOT want any extra charges added to my account!"

They emailed me back very nicely and explained tethering and showed concern that perhaps I wasn't doing it. They said if I felt I was being targeted as tethering but NOT tethering, to call a special service number and then gave me some number to call. I'm not going to bother, but...it appears we have all been mywi users.

Has anyone else from any other tethering apps been targeted?

I've tether just about every weekday, no texts or emails from AT&T. I'm not a heavy user though, I average about five to 20MB's daily with the lower figure being more common. I also use MyWi (hotspot).

Not me... I've tethered a little in the past, but I currently have no need to. miwi is uninstalled on my iphone.

I think at&t should allow tethering for free up to 1GB or 2GB a month and charge above that limit.

I tethered for very very brief periods in the past. (Like 30 minutes every 2 months, since it feels like everywhere usually has free-wifi). Never had data usage over 1 GB in any months for the last 1.5 years, which I think is amazingly low. I wonder if they are low balling my data usage chart in hopes for me signing up for there lower data plans and off my unlimited.

Have any of you got the text but no e-mail?

Thats what happened with me. Never got an e-mail, so i've still been using the tethering very lightly, < 1Gb just in case.

Any idea why i didn't receive an e-mail?

Exactly.
AT&T requires you to get a tethering plan if you want to use the WebTop app on the Atrix.
This includes the Laptop dock which is nothing more than an external display and keyboard.

Never mind the fact that the WebTop RUNS ON THE PHONE!
They actually have the balls to call this tethering.
Even the techs at Motorola are shocked.

Same here. Got a text a few weeks back but no email and nothing since. And I have also reduced my tethering usage.

Just clarifying your post slightly. According to Motorolla, you only need a tethering plan if you are using the dock over 3G / 4G. If you do it over Wifi, then you do not need the plan

"You can utilize Webtop via WiFi at any time without the need for a tethering plan. The tethering plan is only required if you want to utilize webtop over the 3G/4G network."

True.

I use the WebTop app in my living room and sometimes forget to turn on WiFi.
You get this lovely message about not having a tethering plan.
Ridiculous considering I'm not tethering anything to the device, just hooking up an external display and keyboard.
Greed pure and simple.
I've already filed a complaint with the FCC and BBB over that little "feature".
