well, I'm not sure what Verizon is... what is the difference between EVDO and 3G?

3G is just a huge umbrella term for any "third-generation" cellular technology. There are two main families of technical standards, "3GPP" and "3GPP2", which people usually refer to as "GSM" and "CDMA" for the original technology used in each family.

"GSM family/track"

2G = GSM (voice and data)
2.5G = GPRS (data only - GSM used for voice)
2.75G = EDGE (data only - GSM used for voice)
3G = UMTS (voice and data)
3.5G = HSDPA (data downlink) / HSUPA (data uplink)

"CDMA family/track"

2G = CDMA
2.5G = CDMA "1xRTT"
3G = CDMA "EV-DO" rev. 0
3.5G = CDMA EV-DO rev. A / rev. B

Importantly, Verizon wireless and Sprint use the CDMA track, While AT&T and T-Mobile have GSM/UMTS networks.

So besides 3G, what else do we expect this new iPhone to have?

There needs to be quite a few killer features to persuade someone like me, who only bought their iPhone 7 months ago (UK launch) to go out and buy a new one.

-larger capacity?
-GPS?

I'm hard pushed to think of much else they can do on the hardware side. Very prepared to be surprised though.

There is a lot of other threads with literally ten's of pages dedicated to this very thing. I think GPS will be included, 24/32GB flash is possible, definitely an upgraded camera, and possibly a forward facing camera. What I would LOVE TO SEE is them use that special LCD display that you can actually uses in direct sunlight. It somehow reflects the sunlight without washing out the screen, it actually improves the display contrast. amazing, eh?

Thats not a problem for me, i can't even remember the last time i used the calc app on the iPhone

HAHAHAH.. He is NOT talking about a calculator application on the blackberry having a small interface. Let me rephrase what he said: "the Blackberry has a TINY screen LIKE A CALCULATOR".

So we could definetly see AT LEAST Jailbroken 3G iPhones that could run on Verizon's new "open" network later this year?

Hey guys talking about iphones, does anyone here watch house md?
'13' was holding a white iphone shaped phone, that i cant confirm if its some other phone though.
it starts at about the 22nd minute when they suspect the patient has Graves Disease.
its white, iphone shaped too.
take a look.
House MD. has used alot of macs/iphones in their set....

2 models to be announced...

well they're not going to continue to sell the older model.

The only semi concrete conclusion I can draw from AT&T's website is that there's going to be 2 models available at launch.

And it's also possible the only difference between the models is going to be color. Original and Black.

And off course there's also the slim chance we may see an announcement Tuesday May 13th 2008. simply because of the lack of current iPhone availability.

An offtopic question for you, what is the family plan pricing for the iphone service?
I'd like to get the $59.99 plan level of service for both mine and my wife's future iphone. What would that pricing be? I have heard an extra $20-$30/month for the other phone for a total of $80-$90.

dont know if this was mentioned yet but tried logging into AT&T and their site is down for "update maintenance". what that means could be anything. weird that apple stops selling iphones. guess we will see on this tuesday. but i feel like nothing will be released until jobs reveals it first.

im praying...

i'm praying (even though im not remotly religious- actually, i guess i am: the church of Apple) for a release tomorrow! How awesome would that be!?! Thats the best birthday present i could ask for!

Well, it's after midnight in the EST and they haven't taken their site down for maintenance.... let's see what happens around 5-6am

Well it's 2:15pm EST here :D Most apple things happen at 4:00am for me, so maybe a surprise when I wake up. :)

Blackberry Bold?

What exactly is Bold about the new Blackberry? It looks exactly like...like a Blackberry. It's the same form and the same features. Excuse me while I get excited.

No. Verizon's network is CDMA. All current iPhone implementations are GSM and will remain so for AT LEAST the 5 year exclusivity agreement in the US. Putting development time/money into a CDMA iPhone for the extremely limited outside-US CDMA market wouldn't make sense.

GSM is what pretty much the whole world uses. Verizon/Sprint/Alltell are just the oddballs :)

NO. Verizon Wireless and Sprint have CDMA based networks, while AT&T and T-Mobile have GSM networks. Even worse, T-Mobile doesn't even have a 3G/UMTS network running yet, so there is really no alternative to AT&T when the 3G iPhone comes out -- although you could run it on T-Mobile and just get EDGE speed.

In the future, although Sprint is building out a WiMax network, which is a totally different technology, Verizon is finally going to switch over and Join AT&T and T-Mobile in rolling out future 4G/LTE networks. LTE is the future evolution of GSM/UMTS networks. So In 3-4 years when AT&T and Verizon have their 4G networks up on the 700mhz band, we may be able to switch between providers with the same phone. At the least, it will lead to a greater selection of phones since it simplifies manufacturing. Also, it appears Europe and much of Asia are also going to launch an LTE 4G network in the future.. so assuming the hardware supports all the bands, it will be possible to roam around the world while getting the same fast data access as your home country (hopefully).

Everyone says Tuesday, and I'd love that, but why Tuesday again? I'm sure most will roll their eyes at this but what is it about Tuesday...

if you look on apples web site there is a family plan section for the iphone.

it starts at 109

Well, Verizon said that you could literally build your own phone and bring it to them and they would put it on their network. I shall build myself a 3G iPhone ;)

I agree Apple will probably never create a CDMA/EV-DO iPhone since LTE/HSOPA is just around the corner for Verizon, AT&T and eventually TMobile. But to say that CDMA is "Extremely limited outside the USA" and that "the whole world uses GSM" is BS. That seems to be a popular myth, and is probably caused by Europe overwhelmingly having GSM networks.

259 operators worldwide in 98 countries with over 400 MILLION user worldwide, including networks in the USA, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, China Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Venezuela and many other countries in South America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

Tuesday is special...it's like my christmas. :D:p

That's good enough for me! :D

I had a feeling Steve Jobs was one of the Three Wise Men (and for the Jews.. Steve was the son of Moses, and for the Scientologists Steve sleeps with L. Ron)

It's a great idea if you are up for the task :). Just have to swap out the GSM module for a CDMA/EV-DO module, then reprogram the firmware with the SDK from Qualcomm to connect up to Verizon's network and then write the OSX drivers for the CDMA module. Maybe Apple has a large part of the radio module code abstracted away just in case they decided to make a CDMA/Wimax iPhone. Anyone have advanced knowledge of the iPhone underpinnings? Anyways, if you get it done, you HAVE TO SELL A CONVERSION KIT! hahah... we all wish, right?
