My guess is this:

The 3G iPhone might be announced this week and for sale in the near future. I think they may want to sneak it out to avoid the rush they experienced last time. Hype is good for sales, but not so good for instore purchasing and activation, as we saw on Jun29.

The 3G iPhone will carry either a 1.4.1 firmware or the latest 2.0 beta software. It will be updated to the official 2.0 only a few days later.

This makes sense so that customers can immediately begin to take full advantage of the 2.0 features/app store with the faster, more cooperative data service.

As for the model itself, I don't think they are going to go backwards with the construction. Aluminum...>plastic? This makes no sense and is the exact opposite of their progress with the rest of the product line.

It seems RIM made a good move and brought out their 9000 before the new iPhone. A lot of people are still skeptical as to whether or not the up coming iPhone will be good for business. RIM has obviously established themselves as one of the top electronics manufactures that produce phones for business oriented people. RIM's stock is up now for awhile. I think it would have been bad for RIM to release the new phone along the same time Apple.

Think RIM had an idea of the iPhone launch date due to the fact that the 9000 is AT&T exclusive for only 6 months? (Not sure of the exact details of that) And as a result put out their phone to get a bunch of sales under their belt before Apple releases their product and establishes the fact that the iPhone is the next up and coming business device to have.

Steve has really started to press the iPhone as the best business device to have. I wonder if we will see the new iPhone come out ahead of schedule just for the sake of having it out there before everyone gets a whiff of the new blackberry? I doubt that's what it's all about... But I wonder if that thought at least crossed some Apple bigwig minds.

Anyway, just a random thought.

all i want from the new iPhone is a better cam, 3G of course and maybe GPS. And i have to admit that the new blackberry doesnt look bad

Many possibilities here. Might not be a corporate AT&T store, might be unknowledgeable salespeople, might be sold out of iPhones and is sick of fielding questions about it. Any number of things could be going on here.

True. But then why was there the same response from the customer sales rep over the phone? Why are the AT&T employees so vested in getting me not to buy an iPhone? I'd think that anything that would get me to switch to AT&T (I told them I'm currently a Verizon customer) would have them desperate to please me. If I say I want an iPhone, why won't they sell me an iPhone contract?

Perhaps greed is a stronger motivation than happy customers. I'm sure AT&T makes far more money from people who opt for the LG.

Oled?

I myself truly doubt it but I know there s a rumor that the new iPhone will have an OLED screen. These OLED screns are known for their extreme back. Could the new iPhone black be called that do to its OLED screen with very deep, dark, rich balcks? Odds are Apple (or Steve really) will want to update more to the phone than just 3g.

I don't think the tech may be ready yet but hey... Maybe it is.
What do you think?

You know, if Apple had just told Tony Stark to build the 3G iPhone, Tony Stark would have built it in a cave with a box of scraps, powered by an arc reactor and looking crazy cool it would have been completed months ago.

Bit**es don't know about Tony Starks engineering skills.

hehe

ya and you might even get a gun that pops out of the camera of the iphone!:p

You can dress up a turd to look like a Mr. Big, but the fact remains that it's still just a turd that looks like a Mr. Big.

RIM actually make some decent devices. Granted the UI is not as pretty or slick as the iPhone but its very usable and the new Bold UI looks great.

Calling the Bold (or any recent blackberry) a turd would be somewhat harsh, there are far worse phones out there that'd deserve that label. Any Windows mobile phone comes to mind...yes even the Touch diamond, Symbian phones would be another example

The blackBerry Bold has a tiny calculator screen.

Thats not a problem for me, i can't even remember the last time i used the calc app on the iPhone

I hope iPhone 2 wows me, i really do but i just don't see it at this point. I don't care about the App store...i don't even have any app on my iPhone now so means nothing to me. 3G in all its goodness is still dependent on the network provider. O2 3G...sucks!, so no real benefit again there.

Question then becomes is it worth it to pony up £270 or more + contract? then again i'm just speculating but point is, the phone has to have some strong incentives for me to upgrade. Otherwise i'll just get the Bold, especially seeing as i'll be able to get it significantly discounted should i decide to

Unlikely...
I love the LCD on the iPhone. This display is perfectly usable in bright Sunlight. Haven't seen aynthing like it, really.

Silver & Black Models

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet because I haven't taken the time to read all these posts but I think they are going to have a choice of silver AND black anodized aluminum, just like the iPod Classic.

I just don't see them changing the form factor because I read somewhere that just a few months before Jobs introduced the iPhone at MacWorld they were not happy with the case and changed it at the last minute. If they fretted over the appearance like they did, I don't see it changing except for color. Has the iPod Classic form factor changed all that much since it's introduction?

A lot of the other phone manufacturers offer different colors, I'm sure Apple is doing the same.

By the way, that chrome bezel will look sharp on a black anodized aluminum case.

Peace, out.

^^ I agree with you

Please let there be a choice of black brushed metal and silver brushed metal. I love the iPod Classics design and hope the iPhone uses the same materials and looks even sexier ;)

What if the original (current) iphone is going to be considered "black" (hence the webpages sporting accessories) and the new phone being something else, maybe looking more "air" like? Might be also a sign that the new phones accessories prol wont be interchangeable with the current models. Maybe thats saying that the new model will be completely different (1.5 x bigger).

Just throwing stuff out there.

Cant wait for whatever the new one looks like Regardless!

I agree, I think a black aluminum case would look really slick on the iPhone and I could certainly see them offering that as an option. Given that they've been pushing so much towards "going green" I don't think they would backtrack and go with a plastic case instead, but who knows. I just think a glossy black case would suck- not only would it attract fingerprints, but it would likely scratch easily, making it look worse with time.
A solid black aluminum iPhone with the chrome bezel would look fantastic- I'd even prefer the bezel to end up looking more like that on the iPod touch, actually

We may have our expectations backwards

Perhaps a new color iPhone will be introduced alongside the "oldstyle" black/chrome model.

Come on 3G iPhone with blazing fast browser, REAL software for the working pro, and real smart phone features! :D

Hopefully Apple and AT&T can hook up with an insurance company and provide insurance for the blasted thing.

No offense, but in almost every comment I see you post about the iPhone you whine about insurance. Why don't you just get the Apple Care for it??? Am I missing something?

I'd be very surprised if they did this. Apple knows there are thousands of people waiting for the 3G iPhone. If they were to release one in the next few days but then release a better phone a month later they'd never hear the end of it from upset consumers. Thousands of people who ran out to buy what they thought was THE new iPhone would try to return them a month later to get the new one.

well apple didn't promise to you or any one else anything, so they free to do whatever they want to !!! :apple: it can be quite upgrade without any show. But on June 9th Steve will pop out from hes pence new toy ... for us " saying here the new iPhone for you human to play MORE with SDK" Gps, 3G and bunch of other stuff

as far as I know you can buy insurance from different insurance company's ... ask you local sales representative. Geico ))))))

It doesn't cover accidental damage as far as I know.

right, AppleCare only covers hardware failures and the like... any physical damage done to it (whether intentional or accidental) is not covered by AppleCare. I would imagine if you want insurance the covers damage, you could probably get it included on some form of home owner's insurance or something similar.

I vote for Apple announcing the new iPhone tomorrow, Tuesday 5/13, for availability starting June 12, when AT&T employees are leave-restricted.

I can't imagine Apple having the iPhone entirely off the market for even 4 weeks, but that does create a nice gap to avoid the 'bought it yesterday, now there's a new version' issue.

Remember that everyone at AT&T stores works on commission - if LG is offering a $25+ spiff on their phone, and the iPhone isn't in stock, which one do you think the sales guy want to talk to you about?
