My current line(Jan 1, 2013- Jan 1,2015): 40-15=25$(talk)+ 40(2GB)=65$

If I upgrade via Next 12 this week or next week:
For the next 12 months,
50$(tax i.e.,down payment)+[25(talk)+40(2GB)+32.5]*12=1220
Lets say, I dont want to upgrade next year and go for 24 months starting Jan1, 2015,
50$(down payment-tax)+[25(talk)+40(2GB)+32.5]*24=2390

If I wait till Jan1, 2015 and then do a standard upgrade,
For the next 24 months,
50$(tax)+200(phone)+[40(talk)+40(2gb)]*24 = 2170
The phone is mine too after 24 months, which will give me additional 200$ minimum. So, 2170-200 = 1970

Difference = 2390-1970=420$
NEXT sucks! An intelligent move by at&t though.
Please let me know if I mis-calculated anything above.

Note: The concept of me paying off the whole price to at&t to keep the phone is useless because we used to pay only 200$ and still get to keep the phone.
The 2 year contract to me never was a problem bcoz I never thought of changing the carrier.

Edit, trying to understand your calculations...

So the 32.5/month is for next 12. If you choose to not upgrade at month 12 and keep your device, you pay off the device in month 20. You do not keep paying for a full 2 years.

It's been like this for a long time... If you upgrade you lose the non-contract/Next discount of $25/$15 a line. You are not getting charged extra, you're just losing the discount. *

*if you are on mobile share

This go round a lot of people are going to find out the hard way a brand new iPhone doesn't cost $199. :)

I'd hate to be the rep that has to try and explain this to people.

I would like to own a bar across the parking lot from each AT&T call center. They will make more than Apple this week!

Here are screen shots of pricing by the way.

Okay guys, I'm going to see if I got this right. I'm currently on the shared 10 GB plan. Its 15 dollar per line. If I agree to a two year contract for the subby price then my line will increase from 15 to 40 dollars per month. However, if I choose the "next" route, then my line will stay at 15 dollars per month, correct?

For me, it appears a 2 year contract is slightly cheaper than going with a Next plan. I have a 2-line, 2GB data Mobile Share Value Whatever It's Called Plan, with a $15/month discount on each line. I don't care about early upgrades.

So with a 64GB iPhone 6:

Next:
$749 + tax

2 year contract:
$299 + tax
$40 upgrade fee
$15 x 24 loss of discount = $360
Total = $699 + tax

So Next costs me $749 over 2 years, contract costs $699 over 2 years.

I'm also assuming I'll save on tax with the 2 year contract since I'll be paying tax on $299 rather than $749, not sure about that though.

If anyone sees an error with my math let me know, but it looks like I'll be going with a 2 year contract.

Yes, it was mentioned that it is $50 cheaper to sign a new contract if you have a plan lower than the 10gb plan. And you are taxed on the full price of the phone whether or not you choose the subsidy.

Your math seems correct - there is one factor which you are forgetting and is hard to calculate - You end up paying the $360 more on your ATT bill since you lose the discount (which you have shown). The tricky part is figuring out the regulatory fees and taxes that the additional $360 will incur over the 2 years. It is unknown but if I had to guess it would put you pretty much even no matter which way you went - that being the case I'd go next since it doesnt up your contract, you can pay the phone off whenever you feel like it (or not), upgraded after 1 year if you want etc. If you go the subsidized route your are stuck with that new payment increase for 24 months, no if ands or buts.

Yes. If you actually READ the thread, that has been said a few times already ;)

according to the calculator here (http://attcalc.com/next/#calculate), yes, it looks like in your case you come out slightly ahead with the 2yr agreement.

Your calculation is perfect. One thing you forgot: Also, you get to keep the phone if you go by 2 year standard contract/upgrade which will get you a min. of 200$ after 2 years.

So if I switch to Next and pay off the phone completely (in either 20 or 24 months) the phone is then MINE? What about the discount applied to my line, e.g. $15 or $25 dollars, does that continue or does that end once the phone is paid off?

For AT&T Next, you can pay the phone off whenever you'd like (there may be some minimum period of a month or two) and the phone is yours to keep, but you don't have to make the payments for the full 20/24 months if you don't want to. OR you can trade it in after 12/18 months, but you're better off paying it off and selling it on your own.

The $15/25 discount continues for as long as you are not under a 2-year contract. If you do AT&T Next, you'll always get the discount regardless of whether the phone has been paid off or not.

Except like I said above, the increased regulatory fees and taxes will be higher with the higher monthly service price. Of course very few people actually read around here so no one sees anything and just blindly ask questions even though the answers have been provided multiple times.

Well, in both cases, after 2 years I'll be able to keep the phone, so no reason to include that in the calculation.

Made the changes

Pity,

I was debating giving up my unlimited data for this mobile share plan, now that i found out that the prices aren't what AT&T says, this changes what I want to do.

Hey, I read your reply. That was useful info that I hadn't thought of, thanks. With Next, does ATT tax you on your monthly device payments? I would think not since you've paid the sales tax up front, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I heard you can keep your current device when using Next. So you could sell it for like $350 for a 5S. Some people says that if you trade in that device you get a faster way to pay for you new phone.
I am still a bit confused about that since I heard conflict views on this.

I'm not really sure what you're saying. It's pretty straightforward. With Next, if you pay off the phone, you can keep it. If you upgrade before you've paid it off, and choose not to pay it off at that point, you don't keep it.

No you don't get taxed twice... no matter how you buy the phone, taxes are paid up front. In the good ol' state of CA, we pay tax on the FULL unsubsidized price of the phone no matter what. So for ease of numbers, I always leave tax out of the equation since it is the same no matter how you purchase the device :)

I understood that after 12 months you have the option to keep it or you can trade in so it will offset some of the cost of the new phone.

This is what I am referring to from another guy post:

A. IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT 2 YR CONTRACT ON THE LINE YOU WANT TO UPGRADE:

-- If you started the contract ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 18, 2014: You are eligible to upgrade to ATT Next on this line right now. This also applies if your contract is over. This will 1. End the remainder of your 2 year contract for this line, if any exists 2. Have NO ETFs for this line 3. Give you complete ownership of the device on this line that is now OUT of contract. Sell as you please and profit.

I don't understand all the confusion, it is REALLY simple, you guys are making it harder than it needs to be. Next 12 (the 12 is key) means that you can upgrade your next plan phone in 12 months if you are still making next payments - you turn the phone into ATT - you get a new device, easy. You then begin a NEW next plan with the new device. You can rinse and repeat as long as you like, or as long as the program is around. Or, you can PAY OFF YOUR NEXT PHONE whenever you want and KEEP IT. Sell it, light it on fire, whatever. Bottom line is, once you pay off the price of the phone via next, YOU OWN THE PHONE. If you never want to own the phone, just keep turning it in every year and keep making next payments, it's that simple.

Next does not charge any fees or interest, it is a FREE LOAN so you might as well use it. If you could buy a $30k car with a 5 year interest free loan would you or would you pay $30k all at once? I'd USE THEIR MONEY for free, duh :p

OK, but in my case my 5S phone was purchased under 2 years contract, one year ago when the 5S was launched. I don't have the Next plan.

Wow, just called to discuss this with AT&T and the rep told me that they do this in order to promote their Next plan. Spoke with a supervisor and they told me that there is nothing they can do about it.

Guess it's time to look for another carrier.

I'm in TX, we pay tax on the subsidized amount, not the full price. I looked back at an old iphone purchase to verify this. So for some people, the tax should be considered. For me, it makes the 2 year contract that much more appealing.
