OK, but in my case my 5S phone was purchased under 2 years contract, one year ago when the 5S was launched. I don't have the Next plan.
No you are stuck unfortunately  YOu need to wait until next year...
Wow, just called to discuss this with AT&T and the rep told me that they do this in order to promote their Next plan. Spoke with a supervisor and they told me that there is nothing they can do about it.

Guess it's time to look for another carrier.
What? You have provided no context to what you are complaining about.

----------

I'm in TX, we pay tax on the subsidized amount, not the full price. I looked back at an old iphone purchase to verify this. So for some people, the tax should be considered. For me, it makes the 2 year contract that much more appealing.

Yes - but remember to factor in higher taxes in your bill due to it increasing due to the subsidized phone

I'm complaining about my bill going up if I choose to simply do a standard upgrade and not choose to use their next program. Isn't that the title of the thread?

Pardon this question, but I just don't have the patience to wade through this entire thread. My only question is: does this apply retroactively to accounts?

My dad is on the next plan, I'm not, and we share data (I forget how much... 2-3GB I believe). My mom's also on the account and she doesn't have a smart phone. Is this basically saying that we get charged $25 a month because we're not on the NEXT program, or does this only apply once it comes time to upgrade?

I'm guessing that the savings in sales tax will offset the increase in the tax on the bill. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to determine the cheapest option. The contract is still about $50 cheaper. But I do understand that I'll have a little more flexibility with the Next plan, so I'm still not sure what I'll do tonight :)

This only applies to people on a Mobile Share Plan I believe...is that you you have now?

I know your not being argumentative ;) I just want you to consider all factors, most people forget about those pesky taxes

OK, makes sense. I brought this up and some people said I could keep it so that's why I was a bit lost there.
I wonder in my situation if jumping into the Next is a good thing. I do have the family shared plan under 10gb.

Right  What is the reason you are so against the next program?

I gave up my unlimited data 3 months ago when my daughter upgraded to move to the family share plan and now if I do the standard upgrade on my line I lose the discount associated with that on top of losing my unlimited data plan. Also I am not interested in the next program. Looked into it and just wasn't right for me. I also have another line on the share plan that is due for an upgrade now so that means when we decide to get a new phone there we lose that discount as well.

They are pushing this next plan down people's throats.

I don't think you really understand the next plan... it is a free loan, that is all. It is a win win no brainer if you are on a family share plan.

So help me understand a bit more. If I decide to go with a 6 + 64gb on the next plan my payment per month would be $35.42 on the 18 month plan and $42.50 on the 12 month plan. Does this include usage and taxes? If so do I get the unlimited talk and text? How much data do I get per month?

Thanks,

One more question, If I switch from the standard family share plan does that effect the rest of the lines on my account or just mine?

Thats just the phone itself, that does not include a monthly plan for talking/data.

Depending on what plan you go with, it would be something more like $65 + $35.42 or +$42.50 plus taxes

Not so sure about that. I just got off the phone with AT&T again and the rep told me that those prices do include the service???

Directly from the calculator site:

Mobile Share Value Plan Pricing: Prices include monthly plan charge & monthly access charge per device.

Just spoke with At&t to confirm my upgrade eligibility for tonight's preorder. The rep was really pushing the Next program, which I have not been interested in since I have been able to toggle my upgrades yearly between my different lines (keeping some with older models longer), plus I've been able to sell my old iphone on the open market for at least the cost of my new phone.

This year is different. Firstly, I have to pay the $40 upgrade fee, but I also found out today that if you do not choose the Next option, your bill will automatically increase an additional $25/month per line that you upgrade.

I had the same experience when I called AT&T yesterday. I was told an extra $25 per month for the next 2 years, because they're trying to phase out subsidized contracts.

Ouch.

Picking up contract-free.

Screen shot?

There is no way, it's in addition too.

Yeah I found it also and it's badly worded and confusing. It's talking about the $15 device service charge, which is included in their calculation, but they aren't including the actual base Mobile Share Plan which starts at $20/month.

They should probably fix that and ASAP otherwise they are going to have a lot of angry people calling.

As you can see, they list the phone price as $649 (or $27.04 per month for 24 months).
Then the Device Access Cost as $360 (or $15/month), so it all makes sense to that point.

And while the small print says it includes the monthly plan charge...

You can clearly see this is how it actually works on their actual pricing page for their plans...

So at a minimum, you would be paying $27.04 for the phone, plus $15 for the device access fee, plus $20 for the monthly phone plan, or $62.04 per month.

I think you're confusing the Next plan with the Mobile Share Value Plan. The Next plan is just a payment plan for the phone. Essentially you pay full price for the phone, divided into monthly payments. This is separate from your service plan, which is the Mobile Share Value Plan. Anyway, if you are getting a discount on the Mobile Share Value Plan, you'll lose it on a line if you go to a contract on that line. You just need to determine if the savings you're getting on the subsidized phone is greater than what you're losing by losing the discount.

You are correct and I decided that I am saving more by just upgrading to a standard 2 year contract.
Next plan - $65.52 per month
2 year - $45 per month

So, does this mean anyone that orders directly from Apple will get a surprise in their bill for $25 more per month / per each line upgraded?

Im sure apple wont offer/promote next. That would mean we could only order from ATT, correct?

Yes, you are right. Here is a screenshot of the pricing.

Why do people continue to make this so difficult?

People continue to make it difficult because it's so ****** confusing. That screenshot does not say anything about how your service cost will change depending on which plan you choose. For some people, the Next plan is cheaper. For some other people, a contract is cheaper.
