Just got off the phone with AT&T. Reps have no idea about this yet. AT&T hasn't said anything to their own people about it. I think there will be some very frustrated and confused people come sunday...

Of course not. It's not going into effect until Sunday. There's no way they would tell you anything about it today.

A business does the right thing. How refreshing. Thanks AT&T.

(ummm . . . . now can I please use my Data allotment on my iPad to tether please)

Agreed! I'm a Verizon Customer

Where you going? Sprints unlimited turtle pace plan? So when you got your unlimited plan and could download at 800K to 1M, do you think AT&T should keep growing their network and infrastructure so everyone can download at 12M-15M. Or maybe AT&T should wait a few more years to even rollout their LTE so they can make it large enough to accommodate everyones unlimited plan at 12M-15M.

#1 - AT&T is still providing you unlimited plan and at the same speeds you signed up for (probably didn't think of that).
#2 - AT&T is still providing you the unlimited plan. When you are so much faster than everyone else, you have to balance your network
#3 - You have NOWHERE to go that compares. You can go to verizon and pay for every 5GB you use or you can go to Sprint and get your 800K to 1MB unlimited.

At least with AT&T you get the fastest network for the first few GB, then you get a little slower network unlimited.

If the grass is greener with Sprint, JUMP SHIP! If you think it will be better with Verizon, you need a checkup from the neck-up. It will take 6 months of misery just to get an accurate bill from Verizon :=)

I have Verizon and I completely agree with you. The bill is never accurate, I used to call monthly for various reasons when the bill came out. I hardly ever complain but it actually took me about 6 months to get it right and have a steady bill month to month. Now it's very rare I have an issue, but once in a while a random charge will comes up. However, they are always good about returning it.

I also agree with you about the speeds. Slow 3g speeds are my only complaint with Verizon. I had a 4G LTE droid for a bit and it was awesome great for data speed. I do like the idea of being backed by HSPA+ with LTE as a main driver, However, ATT doesn't have LTE here Philadelphia yet.

"The New" iPhone is going to force me to make a tough decision on a carrier.

I wasn't saying the current system was nice or even that I would disagree with you on this. It was simply that, this is the way things are.
We're on the same page here. My apologises if I did not make that clearer.

I have a Droid Charge and 4S, on both phones for a reliable WiFi or USB tether, the phone needs to be rooted/jailbroken. Not sure what other phone you are referencing
I've used an older Nokia running Symbian.

If Apple does not sort this one, they will push this customer of theirs to the competition. I care little for being locked out of a phone I purchased outside a contract.

OK - here's my iPhone history:

7/2008 - got the iPhone 3G on release day
12/2009 - got the white iPhone 3GS (used my own upgrade)
gave my 3G to my wife
5/2011 - got the white iPhone 4 (used my own upgrade)
gave my 3GS to my wife (3G had been killed in a toilet incident)
10/2011 - got the white iPhone 4s (used my wife's upgrade)

Now here is the tricky part... I kept the iPhone 4, and it has been sitting unused in a box for 6 months. I had planned on giving it to my wife when she finally kills off the 3GS, but she's still perfectly happy with the 3GS, so it just keeps sitting in the box.

Now since this iPhone 4 is not being used, can I get it unlocked?? Or would I have to upgrade my wife to the iPhone 4, and then unlock the 3GS? I'd obviously rather unlock the iPhone 4.

What about an old iPhone 4 that i have that i replaced when i got a 4s? I still have a contract on that # but that phone isn't on one.

AT&T you just kept my business for doing the right thing.

And it didn't even take an Act of Congress that no one in either party read!

This is a rare moment when Corporate interests and consumer interests actually align. It warms my heart to see it. :D

Good, I think the law should dictate that once the origional contract a device was purchesed with has been seen through completion that the device should be automatically unlocked.

So will this happen automatically (over the air) or will we have to go into a store?

Not by calling AT&T. Their reps have no clue. When I asked about this, the guy offered to sell me an unlocked iPhone 4S (no joke).

Login to ATT website, go to your MyATT, go to My Profile, it is listed about middle of the page. If you have multiple lines you need to select the line you want to view.

Let those socialists have their silly consumer protections. I'd rather have a free and open market where businesses are able to write contracts however they please without fear of serious punishment.

wtf are u russian?

---

anyway, the way it works in germany is that u just go on your providers website, fill in your UIDD and your phone model number and click unlock. 5 minutes later its working with any sim :) simple as that

So when I upgrade in October to the new phone, will they be able to unlock my 4s so that I can sell it for more on eBay?!?! :D
