I was never on a contract with them and i didnt upgade through one of their "policies." could i still be eligible? I might give them a call.

My advice is to just play it cool. Nothing would be worse then having some nitwit think you're up to something tricky and give you a hassle.

Pop on in on Sunday and report back here. We'll all be waiting for your detailed report. :D

Verizon has had a international unlock but that is not enough

Verizon has had a international unlock but that is not enough. Start a twitter war on verizon @verizonwireless #Verizonunlockiphone

I wonder if this will apply to iPhones bought used? I bought my 3GS from the original owner when the iPhone 4 was released. This would be great so I can just run iOS updates as they come out. Rather than spending a day jailbreaking and unlocking to continue on my cheap TMobile plan.

does this mean, i can bring my old 3gs into Apple store to get a new battery, and in the process essentially getting a new phone, and have that phone unlocked, even though that phone has no service whatsoever w/ ATT for several years already? (been using 4 and 4s)

i can't believe. i was ready to move to Verizon too! now i prob will stay w/ ATT as this is one of the most shocking and kindest things ATT or any company has done for me, easily worth $1000+ of value for me as I have many ATT iphones in my household and travel abroad frequently

this is going to help selling iphones much easier. I think that your iphone being locked is just a big fuss and bogging sellers down. now just waiting on uk carriers like o2 and vodaphone to do this so 2nd hand owners of the 3gs like me could have had another sim in thier phones as soon as they got it!

Which is why rooting/jailbreaking is so nice...
Right but why do I need to jailbreak? My iPhone is factory unlocked and was not purchased from carrier under a contract.

I don't want to jailbreak. I want my device to work as designed.

In my last count, I'm clocking six iDevices and Macs used in my household.

Why do I need to jailbreak to have the iPhone work in the same way that most other phone do?

I will not jailbreak. I would purchase a phone from a different maker first.

Great win for Apple.

Million dollar question now, What is the process? Hopefully it is something that can be done with just using wifi, rather than an active sim signal.

Does anyone think that they will try to charge an "unlocking fee" as well?

You ask for the unlock. AT&T send the imei number to apple. Apple tells you to sync with iTunes. iTunes tells you it is unlocked.

Shoot. I'm on tmobile now. I wonder if I can still get my iPhone unlocked since I finished the contract last summer.

What if the device is not currently active but the account is? Can I unlock it then?

Okay, so our AT&T iPhones will be unlocked. Who can we then use besides AT&T? T-Mobile?

OK, AT&T, you're almost there. How about these, next?

- Does paying my ETF on a new phone qualify me for Unlocking? Please make that so.

- Please STOP requiring a data plan. The iPhone works perfectly fine as an "iPod touch that can make calls and send SMS". It doesn't need a data plan.
I wanted to let my daughter use my old 3GS. It worked fine without a data plan, until you forced one on her. Now she's back to using her old phone.

- Where is family/shared data plans? My wife and daughter would like to use their own iPhone, but it would make me SICK to have pay $20-$30 per device even if they do NOT want data plans.

I wasn't saying the current system was nice or even that I would disagree with you on this. It was simply that, this is the way things are.

I have a Droid Charge and 4S, on both phones for a reliable WiFi or USB tether, the phone needs to be rooted/jailbroken. Not sure what other phone you are referencing, but then again I have not really used Windows or Blackberry much, so maybe they do have this feature built in.

This is the best news i have heard in a while
I have been waiting for them to announce this since the beginning of time
too bad i will only be eligible to unlock my wife's phone and not mine. :(

Are android phones eligible too?

Let those socialists have their silly consumer protections. I'd rather have a free and open market where businesses are able to write contracts however they please without fear of serious punishment.

Yeah, because this has worked so well so far.

Hmm, I have a iPhone 3GS that I bought from a friend who upgraded to an iPhone 4. I wonder if he will have to initiate the unlock or if I can do it, or if it only matters what IMEI it is.

Great news! Now hopefully the ATT staffs will be trained for this or I will be spending hours on phone.

I wonder if they'll unlock my 4S. I upgraded using on of my other family members upgrades, so while my phone is new, my contract ran out in February.
