Seems like the difference between what people are expecting in a 4S vs. a 5 are:
1. Cosmetic difference in casing
2. Larger screen.

RE 1. is only imporant if you hate the current design. That's a matter of taste. I'm sure there are people who hate it, but no one booed over the design when iPhone 4 came out, so why start now?

RE 2. Larger screen would be awesome, but not too many people want a larger phone... If they can't make the screen bigger without making the phone bigger, I'd be OK with the current design.

Personally, I'd like the next iPhone to have the larger screen, but I'm getting it regardless.

Never, the room is filled with fanboys.

Agreed, if Apple unveiled an iPhone 4 and called it iPhone 5, there would be gasps of amazement in the audience like it's revolutionary. Everyone there is a fanboy, guaranteed.

It's not about design - it's about screen size. Big difference. With an iMac you have screen size choices. With an iPhone you do not.

Tony

My point was this, don't discount internal upgrades.

It's the reason why iOS 5 runs smooth on the iPhone 3GS, while iOS 4 barely runs on the iPhone 3G.

I think after one n half year if they only anounce 4s they should be booooed a lot..
imagine you buy a vw golf of 2009 and then 2011 the same car comes out with jusy different engine n exhaust.
But the rest optically to be the same :D that would suck i think, not even a set of new wheels or front lamps ?
i better stay with my curent iphone4 then!!!!!!!!
im not a fun boy of no one ;)

Keep in mind - Apple hasn't said anything about anything.

All the iPhone4S this and iPhone5 that comes from everybody EXCEPT Apple.

I am not an Apple apologist - just a reminder that Apple has been, and will be, mum until it"s it's ready.

"We have met the enemy, and he is us" Pogo ;)

Yes, but you also have to realize that technology is slowing down as well.

Processors used to have MAJOR upgrades every year, whereas now, Quad-core is JUST becoming the standard in computing, even though it's been out for years.

At the rate of expansion that technology used to grow, we should have 4-5 Ghz processors out now, but we don't. Tech is definitely slowing down.

That said, mobile phone has a lot of room for expansion. It's just not quite cost-effective yet.

For example if I get 16GB of RAM for my iMac split up into 4 sticks of 4GB, It's gonna cost me about $125, whereas if I get 2 sticks of 8GB, it's going to cost me about $800.

The price to manufacture mobile phone RAM is even greater. If RAM was upgradable like in computers, you would probably be paying $800 for just 2GB or so.

Wrong. The event will be for the press. There will be no fanboy cheering. That only happens at WWDC.

I'd have to say battery technology is enemy #1 at the moment for smartphones. Should be 9 - 12 hours of screen on time available in smartphones...

Maybe Apple only planned to launch iPhone 4S (w/ iPod touch 5). But a lot of people began to believe fake rumors about iPhone 5...
But you've got to think, it's potentially damaging for Apple for people to get super excited about Apple having an iPhone 5 coming out, and only release a 4S.

You would think they would do everything in their power to suppress the rumors, and it seems like they have done nothing, if not fueled it.

Thank god.

The fake fanboy cheering is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Used to make the keynote overly annoying to watch.

Thanks for the info rdowns :)

I completely agree.

Battery scientists (whatever I don't know the tech term :D ) are definitely lacking in innovation.

Truthfully, anyone who can come up with a competitor technology to lithium will make BILLIONS.

Especially for use in things such as electric cars and the like. Battery technology is incredibly expansive in it's market size, so I don't understand why people don't spend more money investing in research for it. One breakthrough is all it takes. Definitely easier said than done...

I personally hate (if this happens) the "tear-dropped" shape to the iPhone 5. Imagine holding a slanted iPhone next to your ear, or a angled phone on your desk. In my opinion, I would buy a 4S because I like the current design on the iPhone 4. A5 and 1GB ram For The Win! :D

Apple puts design first. Always. Did they care the the iPhone 4 wasn't ergonomic in the least? No.

Design sells and they know that. The more expensive it LOOKS, the more people will pay for it. It's brilliant.

Plus the graphic designer in me is so bored with my iPhone 4's look it's unbelievable.

RE 1. True, i do hate the current design. But the current design is plagued with negativity: antennagate issues, proximity issues, glass issues, ergonomic design issues, consumer report couldn't recommend it, etc. and that's a fact. The only reason people bought this device is because it's an iPhone. If any other mobile company launched the same device, it would've been a failed product.

RE 2. Judging from the latest smartphones on the market, a larger screen is where it's at.

The people that attend would be mature enough to not 'boo' at the presenter. After all each ticket for WWDC specifically is several grand so that could be considered as a kind of legal barrier to keep the youngsters out. Note that I'm only fifteen so don't picture me as a fifty year old that hates kids. I would love to go myself once I'm older and well off financially.

That's what I would love. Have Tim announce a 4s and watch the bloggers all start to nerd rage. Then at the last minute Steve shows up and says "one more thing... here's the iPhone 5."

I would have a nerdgasm.

BTW, there better be some major boos if the iphone 4s is the only big news they have for us...
