Well I just bit the bullet and placed an order in the Apple Online store. It says it won't ship until April 22nd. Oh goodness, that's more than a month away.

At this point, is it worth just buying online and waiting?

Order it online but still go to your local store to try to grab one. The online order is your backup plan. If you end up with two, eBay one of them to help pay for the other.
Best Buy is fulfilling orders way faster than Apple unless you ordered right at the launch time. I have received a phone call from Best Buy (in error, it was the wrong type of iPad, but it went to the floor because she asked if I wanted it) and know two others who have done the reservation at a BB. One has already gone to pick up their iPad today since they got a shipment in. They have some that have cleared waiting lists. If you find one elsewhere, the $100 gift card is refundable.
Apple made the launch insanely confusing with the mish mash of stocking and lack of information.
I waited in line on Friday but gave up after that. Ordered online that night with an estimated ship date of April 1. Until then I casually check around with my local retailers to see if they happened by the unit I want. If something turns up over the next two weeks I'll buy and cancel online.
My local Apple Store was not helpful today. They have no clue when they'll get shipments or how much. Best they can suggest is to come early and wait in line every morning to see if something shows up. Yeah right.
My time is far more valuable than that. I told the Apple guys that corporate really mucked up and pissed off a lot of potential customers. And they agreed with me. I figure Apple has one month to straighten things out. Come Apple we'll see a lot more Android competitors hit the market and frustrated consumers stray. After all a tablet is a tablet.

I was trying to find mine at a Target get 5% off with Target CC to soften the tax blow and satisfy my gotta have it now fix but no luck. Looking for a 64G 3G ATT.
So I called Macmall used my Macmall CC has no interest/payments for 6 months, No Tax and Free Shipping. I bought several Macbook's and even my new Macbook air from them with no problems and always love how they throw in free printers and software. I also have a sales rep extension I buy from to bypass the wait on the phone. I know it will take a few weeks but dont have to worry about card being charged with no interest promo and can take my time paying for it will be paid off way before 6 months.
Till then will just have to keep using my iPad 1. I really want to Jailbreak anyways so hoping by the time I get it Jailbreak 4.3 will be fully functional.

I've never heard of MacConnection, so I googled them to see what their reputation was like. Didn't get very good reviews (4 out of 10 was the average). Not many reviews either, only 38, which makes me wonder how long they've been around, or will be around. I hope your experience ends up going well in the end though. The reviews I saw on them were too sketchy for me to even consider them.

I looked up B&H as well. Outstanding marks (9.83 out 10), and 17,000+ reviews too. Glad I looked.

Needless to say, I ordered from B&H (ordered the 32gb Black wifi-only one). Tired of going to the Apple store over and over and waiting in line, with a spot near the front each time, and still not getting one. The shipping time on Apple.com is too long at 4-5 weeks. I'm hoping B&H ships later this week, or even next week is fine, but they seem confident many orders will go out later this week. Regardless, I liked my chances best with them after looking at all the options and giving up on the lotto method of trying to shop up early at the Apple store each day. I checked out Best Buy too, calling around. They have lots of pre-orders already in queue, and apparently the stock shipments they have been getting in have been very small and limited (at least at the stores here in Phoenix). I think for the most part, people will be waiting a long time at most Best Buy stores since their shipments appear to be pretty small and most stock is diverted over to Apple stores.
Best of luck to everyone still hunting though!

I agree - Apple is bumping up estimates, likely to cover up for any mistakes
In reality, I'm sure they'll ship out sooner - it's one month? You'll get it eventually and be happy as a clam - go online
I hope mine ships sooner. Even though I could cancel it and try B&H, I think at this point I'll just wait it out... No one is getting theirs fast.

i ordered 3/14 from B&H..., and nothing they said led me to believe it would be anything less than a few weeks.

i have generally had good service from B&H, but was a bit pissed that the salesman told me 3 times they would not charge me till it shipped.
but they charged my card immediately.
i called to complain, but customer service said it's "normal store policy"..., although they are thinking of changing it, which must be how the salesman got confused...
right...
i hope they are solvent.
I went on the Release day and say about 600 in line I instantly went home and ordered onine and I'll get mine around 4/6, its not worth the time and hassle to check around everyday. If I happen to be in a target or walmart and I stumble on one I'll grab it and cancel and if not I wait, I still have my Ipad 1 till it comes in , then it goes to my Niece.
I'm fairly positive that its a logistics issue rather than a lack of supply (at least with regard to the stores)
This thread is full of people who are patient and reasonable. What a breath of fresh air after reading some of the threads full of squealing babies who can't have their iPads right now, and how Apple is terrible and doing this on purpose and conspiracy and blah blah blah.
I also ordered online a couple of days ago, have an estimated shipping date of 4/11, and will wait (more or less) patiently until then. I may check the status daily...I can always wish it would ship sooner, right?

I ordered online at 4am on the 11th and got mine already.
If I hadn't, I'd still just order online and wait. I don't need a new gadget enough to wait in lines, check around every day or every few days etc. I've got better things to do with my time than that.
So I always order gadgets online these days and just get them when I get them. I'm glad I was lucky and got mine fast this time, but I've had other times I had to wait a month or more after launch and I was fine with it. I don't have to be the first guy on the block with the shiny new toy.
My time and lack of frustration is more valuable to me than expending effort to get a new toy quickly.
But of course, some enjoy the line experience, enjoy shopping and hunting for things etc., and more power to them. To me it's just time and energy that I could spend on work or things I do enjoy since I hate lines and don't like shopping in general.

Same day mine is due, ordered the morning of 3/13. I still pop by the Apple store around 9am but no dice, no ipads Mon or Tues, and this morning they only had verizon ones. This will all be a bad memory in a week or 2 anyhow and next year I'm going to be smart and get up and do the preorder and never wait in line again.

Yes, I'm so happy to read other people who are in the same boat as me, just waiting it out... Sure I'd like to get mine sooner, but hey, I'm not willing to bug every store owner multiple times a day to ask if they got anymore iPads. As I said above, I ordered mine last night, and it currently has a ship date of April 19th. It says it will deliver the 22nd. They make it sound like they are quite sure and it's not an estimate, but time will tell.

Mine ships 19th and arrives 26th. Its for my wife and she can't wait!! At least it should be here before our vacation in May.
Order on Apple.com while going to stores. If you happen to get one at a store, cancel the Apple.com order. That is what I am doing.
