One thing that gets me is the signal bars tell me nothing about data.
I can have 1-3 signal bars and no data.
Not sure if it is the XRs supposed bad antenna or is it that signal bars are only for voice signal strength.

Amazing, according to the graph, AT&T is 50% faster than the other carriers. Even when using fake 5E, it's still much better. Thus, I really don't understand the headline that says "no faster" - as 50% is much faster?!?
I'd guess you are reading the graphs wrong.

The 5GE from AT&T is slightly slower than the equivalent from T-Mobile and Verizon when comparing 5GE capable handsets.
And is still slightly slower than T-Mobile and Verizon for handsets that are not 5GE capable.

And once again this is BETA software. Let see what happens next week with the final.
It may be in BETA, but I don’t think any of expect it to change when the final is released. AT&T already displays 5Ge on Android phones, they have plenty of misleading 5Ge advertising on TV and in print, and my iPhone 8 still displays 4G when on ‘advanced’ 3G while on AT&T. What leads you believe it won’t say 5Ge next week?

I think I’m the only one excited for this. I know it's not true 5G, but I like knowing when I’m in an area with the advanced LTE technologies.

In Poland we have similar fake 5G offer advertised by local operator Play. However they used better quibble calling that ‘5G Ready’. Do you remember HD Ready TV sets?

HD ready TV's i don't reckon would be bad though.. At least their telling you what it will be capable of in due time.

At least HD ready, was world wide marketed.... where as this is only localized to these providers

5GE is 5th generation Edge.

They basically made the Edge network as fast as 4G/LTE.

AT&T should pat themselves on the back.

“Sorry Sprint, while 5G and 5GE (5th gen Edge) look similar, get over it. - AT&T rep

There are always bigger fish to fry in this world -- pretty much nothing on the forums like this one would really rise to that level anyway. It doesn't mean that other things can't be wrong and don't deserve to be griped about.
Touché. Valid point. Maybe every other US carrier should just copy ATT then. It’s all marketing, in a way, anyway.

The marketing is what seems to make it somewhat useless and wrong, rather than sticking to actual truth which would or at least could actually be of some use.

That is very subjective. AT&T just charged me $230 for a call that was made over wifi. When I "complained", their only response was "if you don't like it, leave". So, I have been testing TMobile vs AT&T for the past month or so.

My real live tests within the Bay Area: AT&T wins hands down in cities like San Francisco. Once you are over the bridge, depending on location TMobile dominates. Again, real live recent testing was done for this.

AT&T is not the best, it is the best only in specific areas. Not to mention, overseas it'll cost you an arm and a leg unless you remember to turn on the international part of the plan before you go overseas.
I guess you have discovered that WiFi used for calls is a replacement for the signal to the tower. It's meant to provide a signal replacement for a low radio cellular signal. So, if the call would have had charges applied normally they will not go away being on Wifi calling. In order to do that, you will want a different application that provides VoIP service outside of your phone application.

Was thinking same thing. They had iPhones saying something which wasn’t full LTE, maybe it was 4gLTE or something.

They changed the 3G labeling to 4G on the iPhone 4S and above at the insistence of AT&T, which just lost iPhone exclusivity to Verizon - the 3G label was still present on the Verizon iPhone. It's still labeled as such in the United States - on non-US carriers, it's still "3G".

edit: here's an article from 2012 about this "marketing triumph".

Telcel is horrible. Have gotten 100 a couple of times, but spotty coverage everywhere.

Telcel is only outdone by telmex in terms of being a horrible company. Thank you Carlos Slim.
Well true it depends on where you are located but on the big cities it works well

You, Mac Rumors readers, have a duty to call out AT&T's fake branding to those who are not aware of this nor understand.
That's actually not an obligation of MacRumors in the least. However, it would be advantageous to the general consumer by communicating this misleading information and calling AT&T out.

End what practice it’s beta software? Let’s see what happens when the final is released.
What practice? They are marketing a current service as 5G. It is not 5G service. The actual 5G spec and technology uses different frequency bands of the spectrum, and therefore requires different hardware. They are engaging in deceptive marketing practices.

5g version of Edge? Slower speeds than T-Mobile's LTE. Sounds like AT&T to me.

I am STILL waiting for the “speed” they promised with LTE!
I work on the 5th floor of a building and standing at a window looking at 3 cell towers out the window while getting 4 or 3 bars on singnal strength meter I commonly get sub 1 mbps(bits NOT bytes)and either the upload test fails/times-out or I get 50-100 kbps.

I have called AT&T and their answer is as long as you have data(a web page loads) there isn’t a problem.
[doublepost=1553450694][/doublepost]AT&T has an app called “Mark the Spot” that you can run to report a problem.

I have run it a few times to report the slow speeds but all I get about a day later is a message about some technical issue being resolved but nothing ever changes related to throughput. I get the feeling it is a script or a person that is just going in and batch closing/ acknowledging all the reports.

5G Evolution? More like an evolution of 4G, so 4GE would be way more fitting. I can’t believe apple buy into this crap and let them show a 5G symbol at all.

AT&T and directv are garbage. Antiquated technologies trying to pass as futuristic. No wonder people are leaving both services in droves.

Also employees leaving both of them for making them overwork with their “mandatory overtime”, underpaid, and just how AT&T boldly frauds their customers. I know because I was one of those employees lol
