Seriously? I sold my old iPhone in anticipation of the 3G iPhone and netted nearly 520$ for an 8gb iPhone....Now, I read that the data plan is increased to 30$ from 20$. Let's just say they HAD to increase it that much since 3G is faster.....How do they account for charging people in an EDGE area that much then? In Lansing, MI, where I am, there is no 3G. You can't charge me for speed I don't use.

If I were to somehow get my hands on a new iPhone without extending my contract, how would AT&T KNOW that I'm using a 3G iPhone in an EDGE area and increase my bill? Will they be keeping old iPhones at 20$ a month for data? Wow......Now I'm thinking about finding and buying a 16gb 1st gen iPhone....

its justified because AT&T is basically pay for the majority of your phone in return for that contract......

jeez people, the price didnt just free fall for no reason!

I guess they don't realize who they will be missing out on. Everyone knew the prices of IPhone plans, and that the cheapest was 60+tax a month. As a college student justifying 60+tax a month is very hard but 70+tax? Are you kidding me? This is called greed. College students could be the biggest market for a device like this and they jack up the price? Steve Jobs says that 56% of the market didn't buy it because of price, so AT&T jacks up the price making it more expensive over 2 years than the old one? BS

The extra $10 per month is a deal breaker for me. A guy at a T MOBILE stand in a mall in Golden CO last Friday told me I could get the I Phone on T Mobile. I didn't pay any attention to him but now I will go back and get some details.

tmobile does not have a 3G network

Thanks for the AT&T link. This might be a good thing for some of us. It says in the press release that they have DESOLVED the rev sharing agreement with Apple.

That said I hope the 30.00 INCLUDES unliminted SMS AND now those of us that get corportate discounts can get them on the new AT&T plans.

That would make things cheaper for me anyway....

Yes if they allow FAN discounts then I will be all over the rate increase. I would normally be getting %20 off my bill if it wasn't for apple ....

The rep I talked to (Business care) told me that its speculation at this point (he and his supervisor were not aware of the rate increase). What he did tell me that we will most likely be subject to the higher price but FAN discounts have a likelihood of reappearing.

  • With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299.
  • Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
  • Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.

What a bummer. I wanted to get one too. How can anyone who is concerned about their finances justify paying $85 a month for a phone?

hopefully the iPhone will be able to use AT&T family texting plan now

I recently got a phone call from att saying that they looked over my bill and realized i was paying $40 a month for the unlimited media and text (no joke att called to say i was paying them too MUCH!), but i didn't have to because i am on a family plan that has unlimited everything. So that being said i think the $20, $30, and $40 dollar thing is for ppl who don't already have unlimited.

its $40 more expensive over 2 YEARS, thats $1.69 a month, just hold of on that coke at the gas station and you will be all set

I feel you - I had to do some hard work to convince myself that I should pay $70+tax a month for the iPhone a year ago - I mean, I was on a cheap Sprint plan for $29.00 a month and STILL NEVER went over my minutes - I just don't talk that much...but I wanted e-mail in my pocket and the web too...so I bit the bullet...but $80+tax - I'll do it since I'm already stuck with ATT and might as well have 3G - but it's Bull-**** plain and simple.

Rolex - no one spends money like that - over two years. For those of us just out of college and with low paying jobs - this is not a 1.69 increase every month - it's a $10 increase on an already high bill. Not everyone has the luxury of spreading out their finances over the course of two years.

They actually know EXACTLY what they are doing. At $399, people don't buy the iphone as an impulse buy. At $199, more people will. The average consumer cares only about the price here and now. When you buy a car, the dealer never tells you what the total price is. They focus on the "low monthly payments". Never mind that you will be paying that low payment for a gazillion months! The logic with the new iphone pricing is that people will buy it on impulse, sign the agreement, and by the time they figure out how much they are really paying, it is too late! They already have you locked in.

Wait what... why would you buy a 3G phone when you can't use it where you live (in before "Well I'll use it when I'm in areas that support 3G").

Three reasons:

1) GPS
2) The (presumably) louder speakers on this one as they should have learned from the first iPhone
3) (Presumably) more RAM in this one than last one so hopefully it won't crash on applications as much.

That's the only reason I want this 3G iPhone as opposed to the old one.

so ur getting it on one confirmed thing, and 2 purely speculated things?

If that's true, then give me a jacked up iPhone price that lets me upgrade without signing a new 2 year contract......I don't want that subsidized crap.

Is that one thing that is for sure not enough? Like I said, if all that we are assuming in this thread is true, then no, im not getting it. I'd rather go back and buy a 16gb 1st gen iPhone.

I also live in a 3Gless city and sold my iphone only because i made a 150 dollars after owning it for 2 weeks. Now I don't know what I want to do because I'm in the middle of my contract with my blackjack but want the iphone again. I also want to get the data for 20.

I have a question.... since I will be buying the 3g iPhone (on July 11, thats BS Steve) but Nebraska doesn't even have 3g yet, so will I be paying an extra $10 for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ?

No way 3G is worth $30/month to me. EDGE is perfectly fine as WiFi is freaking everywhere.

The ONLY way 3G would be worth it...and this is maybe, is if Slingbox releases a mobile client. And even then I'm not sure it's worth an extra $120/year just to occasionally watch TV on my iPhone.

Greed. Sad.

I highly doubt anyone will just sign an agreement without looking over the plan. Your right, when buying a car they trick you into that but most people dont really have an option for that. If your buying a car for 40k and it costs 400 a month over 6 years, people do that because they physically cant afford paying for it in less time. Chopping down the years would make the car over 1000 a month to buy so financing over 6 years is a common practice. When I go to look at buying a cell phone I dont look at the phones I look at the plans. I know I can cover the initial cost but 70 (85 with tax) a month as the BASE plan? For 450 minutes and 5000 nights and weekend minutes $85 is insane.

THEN DON'T GET THE ***** NEW IPHONE

news flash dude. you don't need an iphone to call someone or go on the internet. other phones do it, in a not so great way, but you pay less.

You got it.

I was all pumped up as well, but Maine doesn't have a 3G network so I can't really justify paying an extra $10 for nothing.
