I'm on AT&T grandfathered unlimited data plan, and have no idea how you use more than 5GB in a month.

I use WiFi at home and at school because it's more reliable and less battery consuming, but I have used Pandora every day now since I've got the iPhone 5 and still can barely use a GB. I use my phone freely without concern for data (unlimited obviously) and still don't see how I could use even 3GB.

Perhaps some people have that bug that uses LTE even when WiFi is enabled? Or do you guys stream Netflix or YouTube over cellular very often? No (secure/decently fast) WiFi available for most of your day?

Seriously, what is it that you do that consumes 5GB in a month? LTE is fast, and I'm glad I have it available, but I just don't know how I could use that much data. Perhaps people travel more than I do, because then I could see myself using it more, perhaps watch a movie or two on the little cellphone screen at an airport. But for my ad hoc usage, like researching things or streaming music and the occasional video, I have yet to approach even a single GB.

I have the $30 unlimited grandfathered plan and I feel I am throttled without going over the limit. I am in Farmington Hills Michigan and am showing LTE but not getting LTE speeds. I just did a speed test and got 3.69 down and 3.91 up. I have seen others post in the Detroit area with much faster speeds. I have not even used 1 gb of data yet.

So, either I am throttled or there is something wrong with my phone.

Detroit has had AT&T LTE for 14 days. I'd give it a few more weeks to let them get everything ironed out. Next time you are out, try a few tests in other areas and see if its tower specific. Your speed seems to fast to be throttled.
I was in Ann Arbor when 3G went live years ago, and speeds were all over the map for a few months.

I live in Carrollton and can never get over 20-25 LTE speed. Are you closer to downtown? should that matter?

I am closer to downtown than Carrollton (I'm about 10 miles out), but I wouldn't think that would be the difference between the speeds as it's not like AT&T has just one single tower downtown for the whole metroplex. There are bunches of towers around the metroplex and speed depends on congestion/signal strength/etc. I would suspect in general you have far more congestion in your neck of the woods than I do in "ghetto" SE Dallas. Even on HSPA+ I could routinely get 8 Mbps.

At work in Mesquite I only get 8-9 Mbps on LTE but that's mainly due to my building which causes goofy interference/reception issues. Most places in Mesquite outside of my building I get between 30-50 Mbps routinely.

i got throttled today.

went from 27mb to .46

use netflix daily for a 30-45 minute commute

ATT, grandfathered $30 unlimited. Bay area. Still was able to stream netflix like a boss all day through traffic

Will do - I have also had a few incidents of no coverage at all - just now at lunch about 10 minutes from my office and on Sunday in Wixom. I seem to have LTE or nothing. Does that make sense?

Some of you guys spend more time with your phone than human beings. Saddies.

Podcasts streamed use mega chunks of mb. Maybe in doing it wrong?

I also woke up to throttled speeds. I wonder, if i start downloading a 20 minute podcast on wifi then lock my phone, does it still switch the radio to lte/4g? I think this is what happened to me. I started downloading a few podcasts last night before going to bed on wifi, and it probably switched to lte/4g when i locked it.

Curious if anyone on here has looked at what time their data is being recorded on their bill. You can go to AT&T's website and look up your data usage. I'm showing a few days with data transmission's at 12am-1am. I'm NEVER up that late and I stop using data at 4pm when I leave work. I'm on wifi from 5pm till I go to sleep, no LTE. I'm going to be calling at&t when I get home and argue this point. If you are showing abnormal data usage at odd times of the night, EVERYONE should call! This could be similar to the VERIZON problem.

Got repeated warning notices when I hit 3gb and I am on an unlimited plan. This is a slap in the face since I can get 5gb on a prepaid plan. They're trying to drive away their customers, and that's fine by me. It worked.
It does not cost AT&T gobs and gobs of money for unlimited data. It just doesn't. They need to run their business better. If they need to keep inflating the stock price, then they should build better products. The reason they can't keep growing their stock price is that their product, bandwidth, is no longer a cash cow. It's a solved problem. It's getting cheaper. And alienating your customers by increasing prices is not the way to go. They need to face the facts--they are becoming the dumb pipes that they've feared becoming and go back to the drawing board. They will be like the water and utility companies. They can keep making a healthy profit, but year over year growth isn't going to continue. It's a mature business and they should take their billions and billions a year and be content.

So, I just printed my data usage since 9/21/2012. After 4pm I'm home and on wifi, no lte usage at all. I've highlighted TONS of data usage at 10pm, and 1am, and 5am, when I wake up. One night was over 3GB's of data. Now this is not accumulated data from earlier in the day. The data shows throughout the morning when I am connected to LTE. So, people, look at your data usage on at&t's website, you might be surprised. I already called once earlier today, and got no where, so when I get home, I'm calling again and insisting on talking to a tech specialist. I'll update late this evening if I get any where.....UGH!

Thanks donrsd

I'm in Fort Lauderdale now for work, here are my speeds on LTE

Thanks for the post... Ive never gotten anything near that as you can see by my speedtest results post. Something stinks to me I just need someone in my area or closer to me to confirm their getting higher speeds or i Just may drive to ft lauderdale this weekend and see what i get up there and present all this evidence at an att store see what they can do for me because If im paying for it I want LTE speeds I was getting similar speeds on my iphone4 with 3G on a good day that Im getting now.... WTF

I live in Coral Springs, and i get way higher results there :)
Even on Saturdays, when I go to my sons pee wee football games (I coach his team), I always check my LTE speeds.

Lets just say that where I work (around Cypress Creek & I-95) is some of the slowest speeds I ever see.
I know Im far away froma tower @ work because my 4s used to drain TOO fast when I used the internet.

When you figire something out, please quote this message so I know to check this thread.

Ill try to remember to do some speed tests tonight by my house & report the results.
We will see, when i get home from football practice all I want do do it eat dinner & relax

I think it's only the iPhones that are getting throttled. Was talking to a buddy of mine and he uses his Droid as his router at his apartment. Most months he uses somewhere around 50GB!!! He uses it for everything from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and hooks his Xbox to the hotspot for playing Call of Duty online! Said he's been doing it for the past couple years. Never once got throttled or ever got a warning. He has Unlimited Data through Verizon.

Verizon doesn't throttle LTE, even iPhones.

Thats funny, I easily hit 20 gigs last month and it was pretty normal usage,, nothing to serious.

no throttling on Verizon

LTE gets throttled if you go over 5gb. For 3G, it's 3gb.

No, you get charged for the next gigabyte. They don't throttle on tiered plans ...

If you have unlimited... I would call and complain. As long as you are using Apple APPs you should not be throttled.

Apple apps still use data.

What in the world are you talking about.

If you have unlimited, you WILL be throttled.

And it has zero to do with Apple Apps.

Huh???

Most misinformed post I've seen in a while

Guess what?
Your usage is not reported instantly.
It takes time to record and upgrade through their billing system and show up on that site.
That's what everyone thinks. How did I use any data at 2-3 am Im sleeping and etc....
You used the data, just not at that time that it finally recorded in the system.
