NBC was always there, but's it's only available if you watch via phone, tablet or computer. It isn't available on the Apple TV.

I'm in Los Angeles, why is NBC channel 4 available on my Amazon Firestick, but not Apple TV?
Not sure, but this is what's listed on the FAQs section of direc tv now:
Unfortunately, NBC local channels are currently unavailable using Apple TV. Check back here for updates.
Note: At this time, local CBS and CW channels are unavailable. NBC local channels are available on mobile, desktop and Amazon Fire TV devices only.
I was going to cancel until they gave us free HBO and you can use HBO Go, so no need for DVR.
There are other channels that you can log in to, its not perfect, but guessing more apps will be add has the year moves on.
We've had a good experience with DirectTV Now. We got a great price and our service hasn't had any major issues recently.
