I got to the very last AT&T page, entered my credit card information and everything, clicked order, and after a long while got a proxy error. I seriously doubt it went through... What if my card is charged but my order never entered the database? This is ridiculous.

Check your cart. If you got it into your cart, you should be able to check out now. Getting it to your cart is the trick.

after trying all morning on the website, the apple store app got through no problems. received my confirmation email.

Same worked for me about an hour and a half ago. Although it does say that I will have to pay $699. Apparently the Apple Store App is working but just bypassing the AT&T servers.

I was thinking about this earlier: Since they basically let anyone with a pulse upgrade for this iPhone, it seems crazy to me that they wouldn't set up some alternate method, like pre-qualifying for the upgrade, or something similar.

Or offering pre-orders for existing customers before the general public.

Anyone know if there's been problems on this kind of level before? It just seems like this is just insane... You'da thunk it that AT&T would be somewhat prepared...

After almost 3 hours of trying Apple.com, I finally gave up and ordered 2 phones for home delivery via AT&T's site. It was pretty quick and efficient, as long as you don't try to port existing numbers. I got the confirmation email from them with the order number, but they haven't taken the money out of my account yet. But because I don't really trust AT&T, I also reserved the same two phones with a local Apple store, just in case AT&T screws up the order, cancels it, or has a big delay on shipping.

Apple Store App

There is an App called Apple Store....download it and use the app to reserve your iphone 4 at the apple store....took 5 minutes.

I completed a pre order on the AT&T web site just minutes ago with no problems or page load delays. I received my order confirmation. Not a hint of a problem for me.

wtf att

Is it me or does this seem like a big publicity stunt?
Why don't these idiots learn anything from previous BS from their crappy overwhelming servers. These people are nice but retarded at the same time.

figures. reminds me of the the day the first iphone was released when i worked at apple. so many issues and problems. the next year with the 3g, they made it mandatory to activate in the store! many more problems and also the easy-pay systems were not working!!!! so we couldn't even get customers out of the store! ridiculous. apple and att has an awful public relationship here. let there be problems, what else should we expect now-a-days with apple. :)

Iphone Users

Only good news from ATT is that us original Iphone Users can keep the unlimited data plan....

To all you guys telling us to use the Apple Store App: You do know that all that is doing is possibly reserving a phone on a first-come-first-serve basis, and that it's not even checking AT&T for any of your essential information like discount eligibility or data plans?

In other words, you're going to have to wait in a line as long or longer than the one for walk-in orders and have a very good chance of not getting your phone on launch day. Of course, even if you do get in before the cutoff, you're depending on the same sh*tty AT&T servers that failed today, likely under another massive strain, with the added problem that none of your information has been ported over.

If you realize this, more power to you. If not, just know that you will be mocked mercilessly when you come here bitch and moan about it, and deserve every bit of that scorn.

I too was able to get my preorder here on the east coast through the Apple Store App at about 10:45am est.

It *IS* checking the AT*T servers. I get the same error message on the App Store App as I do on store.apple.com.

Technology-using consumers experience technological difficulties while purchasing their new technology. Communications technology company resorts to pen and paper. Ironic isn't it?

LOL.

Now into the afternoon on the East Coast of the United States, Apple and AT&T are continuing to experience massive difficulties accepting pre-orders for the iPhone 4. As we noted earlier, Apple's own site has been throwing up errors for much of the day, but the primary problem appears to be AT&T's servers, which have reportedly completely collapsed under the deluge of requests.

Gizmodo has been staying on top of the issues all day, sharing reports of AT&T stores resorting to pen and paper for taking down customer information or even closing all together. Some customers have even reportedly attempted to log into their AT&T accounts only to find themselves viewing account for information for other customers, creating significant security concerns.

Customers hoping to bypass the frustrating online experience by calling in by phone to Apple to place their pre-orders are finding that Apple isn't accepting calls at this time, refusing to put customers on hold due to the crush of customers trying to place pre-orders. Even when Apple was taking calls, customers spent as much as three hours on hold before being told that there was nothing Apple's representatives could do until AT&T's servers are brought back up.

Meanwhile, customer frustration continues to increase, with both Apple and AT&T taking heat for the issues. While Apple has been known to struggle to keep up with launch-day demand for its products in the past, today's issues seem well beyond the scope of its usual congestion. Certainly the need for so many customers to interface with AT&T's systems during the pre-order process is a contributing factor to the difficulties, but it remains to be seen whether the issues stem from Apple and AT&T being woefully underprepared to handle the load or if customer demand has been significantly higher than the companies anticipated.

not just on the East Coast here in Texas same problems are occuring

LOL, this is the same company that is going to be providing the actual service for the iPhone. Ha ha. Just don't everyone try to use your phone at the same time, and it'll be alright ;)

Try taking a walk

I just went to the AT&T store (brick and mortar). Took me 5 minutes to pre-order. After dealing with Apple/AT&T server issues on/off since 5AM EST, this was the easiest solution.

I'm terrified what's going to happen next week when we all try to activate our phones! I had forgotten that I ran into the same issues last year. It's always the same, when will ATT ever learn
