Atari has released a new emulator for the iPhone and iPad called Atari's Greatest Hits [iTunes]. The free universal download comes with Pong and also offers a selection of 100 classic Atari arcade and 2600 console games for in-app purchase. The full list of games can be seen here but include Asteroids, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Star Raiders, Missile Command, Tempest, Battlezone, and much more. Each 4-pack is offered for $0.99 or all 100 games can be purchased for $14.99.

The package has been well received at sister site TouchArcade, but perhaps most promising is that Atari had previously announced support for the iCade iPad gaming accessory.

The iCade began as an 2010 April Fools joke but based on the response was developed as an actual product. The iCade is a miniature arcade cabinet that allows you to slide an iPad in as the screen. The iCade then provides a joystick and buttons for gameplay.

Asteroids had been demoed on the iCade at CES, but Atari had also promised a "huge suite" of classic games to market the device. It appears that has suite has arrived. The iCade is currently in production and is expected to be available for ordering in June.

Come on now. Other than a VERY select few, Atari games are terrible and don't hold up at all.

iCade would make a perfect docking station (if it charges also) for someone with a cool office or home game room.

Also, how the hell are you supposed to play the Swordquest games without the manual and comic books?

It is nice to see Waterworld though as the contest for it never happened and the cartridge was printed in very limited supplies.

Looks like the manuals come with. check out the video embedded in the story.

This looks completely awesome. I'm glad the iCade became reality. Next up, hopefully: the long-rumored pinball table. Whoever said years ago that Apple products aren't good for gaming?

Doesn't use full screen on iPad?

Some of the customer reviews on the iTunes download page are very critical of the controls for some games. Not sure how well they've ported these to the touch screen interface....

Some are fun. Did you grow up on these? I think those of us who did, still get a kick out of the simplicity of them. I know there's a couple I would love to have for some casual play.

What a cool product. I used to love playing Breakout and then the new and improved Super Breakout. The problem in playing these games now is that we don't have the old circular paddle controllers that made them so much fun to play.

Just great for all us old folks with fond late night memories - family sleeping and all - to get to the last level or best High Score:)

The price is great too 100 games for 14.99 even including duds.

I started playing games in 1984 during the Crash. I grew up more on nintendo, but we had an atari in the house. I've gone back and played hundreds of Atari games over the years for a web site and I stand by my position that most of them are crap.

Some games like Adventure, Tempest, Ms. Pacman hold up pretty well, but they are the exception.

Love the idea but the execution is a joke. So you download the app and get exactly one crappy game, Pong, and you have to wade through dozens of other games just to find it and play it.

Then if you want to get one of the good classics you get is in a "4-pack" that includes 3 games you don't care about. So if you really want all the classics you are essentially forced to buy all 100 games for $20.

Read the product reviews before buying. Some people are complaining that some games are impossible to play on the iPhone screen. Additionally, some games just can't cross over into a touch screen environment because of joystick limitations.

All the fun games were 2 player games. If the iCade had one more arcade stick for 2 player gaming (and also usable for dual analog shooters like NOVA2, Modern Combat 2, and Nazi Zombies), it would be perfect.

Leaving out a second arcade stick was a mistake. You can't even play 2 player pong without a second stick.
