Well not getting my hopes up here, but Apple tend to update their hardware at the beginning of their financial quarter to maximize the impact on sales and profit for the quarter. Tuesday 6th of July is first Tuesday of the quarter so fingers crossed. I have had the cash sitting in my bank account for the last 6 months waiting for a Mac Pro update.

Hmm... now I'll have to buy an EFI 5870 or 5970 and sell this Sapphire Vapor-X 5870.

I've been waiting for ages for the new mac pro ! Im really at the end of patience.... Whats worse is that in India, where i live, it'll reach atleast 2 months later than the release date !

Make it fast apple !!!!!!!!!!

Nice. But one would hope that the next iMac is going to have more than just an upgraded GPU.

I'd like to see them go to a higher res 16/10 resolution and the possibility of an antiglare option.

I like the "retina" display the iPhone. Hopefully Apple could implement a similar tactic into their desktop/laptop monitors. Not too over the top, but 1920x1080 at almost 100dpi still looks pixelated on a 21.5" screen. A minimum of 150dpi would be great considering we usually sit more than 2x the distance from our monitors as we would our iPhone. Although you'd need a decent system to cope with resolutions 2560x1600 or greater. Apple is WAY overdue for Cinema Display update/s though.

Excellent news!

I surely hope the Radeon 5870 will be a normal CTO option for my new Mac Pro!! :D

I wonder how X-Plane 9 will perform on it... ;)

About time.

If they make this GPU BTO, it would be deffinitely a step forward compared to the current Mac Pro.

Hope they don't bump the prices overseas the same way they did with the mini.

So someone has a screen shot of a High end ATi GPU in a 2008 Mac Pro and it makes news as a possible update to the MacPro line. For christ sakes get a grip. This is as much a clue as all the other rubbish that has been posted in the past few month.

There have been rumours about these cards coming for the mac since they were first released for Windows.

I this really the level of news for this site now?

1) Would be nice to have a generally better GPU support in OS X . The current system of having a couple of years old models at 2-3x the price is just impossible.

2) Even if the 5xxx series support is added one would hope that they also add ATI support to VDADecoder. You know, it is kinda pathetic I can’t do GPU decoding of video on a Mac Pro with any of the 3 supported GPUs .

3) Whenever the ATI 6xxx or nVidia 5xx (etc.) series come out it would really be nice have ‘em supported on the Mac from day 1 .

EFI ROM Dump

Does that screenshot mean that someone has an EFI ROM dump that will work with a 5870?

Fingers crossed. I'm going out of my mind with my ancient Power Mac G5 and Tiger. Bring on Mac Pro and Snow Leopard!

Get Leopard for your G5 in the meantime. Seriously it's a lot faster than Tiger.

Also, if you have a hackintosh, you can already run 5850, 5870, 5970, and GTX 465, 470 & 480 :D

Great post and I agree fully! :)

Time of apple charging 2-3x as much for outdated mid range hardware needs to stop - as in NOW!

Either drop the prices down and keep old mid range junk (which in fact for most people is good enough) or indeed keep the prices stupidly high but please justify it by having decent hardware in...

Apple's call really - and frankly, I would be fine with either approach...

Apple is a premium electronics company, if you haven't figured out that premium means expensive, you need to go buy a dictionary.

Hopefully with steam creating a gaming market on the mac, and the focus on how Macs are lacking in terms of performance, Apple will put more effort in pushing better hardware and drivers.

They would be fools not to! Valve opened the doors, now all Apple has to do is walk through.:D Although, part of the reason macs have been having issues with performance, as people have mentioned, is because apple tends to value stability over performance, which at the end of the day is often more important, that is, before there was a significant reason to focus on performance (Steam). Of course, apple doesn't completely ignore performance either. Apple would never have used Intel GPUs in their latest MBPs if Intel hadn't forced them to use them with the Core iX processors. Intel GPUs are crap...

Hmm, does this mean I could partition and hackintosh?

That's pretty tempting.

Wait a minute...

Did I just read some Mac news? I'm not seeing things am I....

Oh wait, I'm reading this of my iPhone so it doesn't count :(

Just read this.

You can? Any guides or how to's?

great post because it is somewhat negative towards apple, uh dude ?

You should edit your signature: proudly trying to bash Apple almost on everything sine 2009 ...

I'd love a new HD 5870 with decent drivers. But if we are graced with such a beast, I bet we only get 1GB RAM instead of a much more preferable 2GB. Oh well, fingers crossed for an update soon.

Now, about that 27" Cinema Display.....
