Not the ones mentioned here. The ATI 5000 series and the Nvidia 400 series are all full- or over-sized GPUs -- in the case of the really high end (ATI 5800s, Nvidia GTX 400s) they are full-width, take up two slots of vertical space and are nearly a foot long. Those sort of GPUs would never fit in an iMac.

Even the somewhat lower-end single-slot, standard-length cards (lower numbered ATI 5000s) would be hard pressed to fit. Maybe if Apple had a heavily customised build of them to fit into an iMac in a non-standard way, though.

There is a Nvidia GTX480 mobility card for laptops. There is also a mobile ATI 5870. Both would work in an imac.

*sigh* retarded

Mac video on all platforms is just fine last time I checked.
All your lokoing forward to is a price increase. There is almost no user scenario that requires those cards on the mac or PC platform.

But I guess you like predicting updates....*sigh* *retarded*

ok here is my dream for the next mac pro

new case. I like the current case (internals) but the external is getting old... try something new.

Esata ports
hdmi ports

CPU
Dual Intel Xeon X5680 (6 Core /12 multithreaded) for a 12 core (24 multi) monster
3.3-3.6 GHZ

SSD as an option for Storage

Bluray optical ? it would be nice but wont happen

bays for up to 8 Drives (just add another row across)
drop down to one optical drive if necessary

New Full size cordless illuminated keyboard

new 27" Cinema display (same screen as Imac) with isight with CF and SD card reader

all this for 20% less then current configs

I'm sorry but these are ridiculous assumptions, on a technical level.

Case - Yes, the design is 'old' but since it does its job there is no need for Apple to try and fix it.

Bays - 'just add another row across' ? Never in a million years see 8 bays. Not only because of the lack of room (and design mess), but the total lack of need for most prosumers.

Keyboard - No need for illumination, unlike a mobile platform such as the MBP's.

Cinema Display - with those specs, why not just buy an iMac?

All for 20% less.... You've got to be joking, right?

Just my luck if they announce something soon.
Just bought a new iMac last week.

Was forced to because my graphics card finally died in my 2006 iMac. I was trying to hold off for a new one but needed a computer.

Wish they would have just fixed my old one instead of trying to charge me 800 bucks to fix it.

Anyone know what the time limit fir an exchange is if they do announce a new one soon?

There are many scenarios. I have a 9800GTX in my desktop. Similar performance to a ATI4850 in the imac and it chokes in several games. The 27" imac has a higher resolution than my machine so it would be a bit worse. It all depends on the games you play. I can certainly make use of a higher end card.

Very good news. Be nice to have video cards in a Mac that aren't two generations old.
Hopefully there will be a complete selection of Quadro and FirePro cards, too.

ahahhahahhh

O RLY?

4 REALS?

Serious though, that was the dumbest thing I have heard all day. Yah Apple just included the drivers for no reason. They're there for looks.

LMAO.
Seriously my oatmeal just almost spilled out my mouth on that one.

H A T E R.

Perhaps the graphics cards will be great, but until apple supports BLU-RAY I will boycott buying new hardware!!!

I got a macbook pro and a Mac Pro.

i think it's 14 days.
with a 10% restocking fee.
but sometimes apple is nice, about both things.

But why should Mac owner have to put up with slower down laptop versions of graphics cards/chips when they have paid a high premium for the very high quality machine?

They should get at least as good as a PC owner would get from their machine.

Well when you use laptop parts that's what you get. The form factor limits the hardware. If you want an imac that's what you get.

The iMacs has always been using a mobile variant of the GPU. Actually its been using a mobile chipsets as well but since the switch to the i7, its actually using a desktop variant chipset mixed with a mobile GPU.

I dont think that the iMac will ever get a desktop GPU as it is a power hog and too big/ runs too hot inside the iMac.

Perhaps when SSD drives become the standard mixed in with a much more efficient OLED displays then will the desktop GPUs MIGHT be able to be used in the iMacs.

Here's hoping that Apple doesn't stick with Core 2 Duos with the 320M on even the 21.5" iMac and moves to Clarkdale dual core Core i3 and up. A reasonable hope for configurations would be as follows:

Low-end 21.5" iMac
3.2GHz Core i3 550, 256MB GeForce 315 (rebadged GT 330M)

High-end 21.5" iMac
3.33GHz Core i5 660, 512MB GeForce GT 340 (rebadged GT 360M)
BTO for 3.6GHz Core i5 680

Low-end 27" iMac
3.33GHz Core i5 660, 512MB GeForce GT 340 (rebadged GT 360M)
BTO for 3.6GHz Core i5 680

High-end 27" iMac
2.8GHz Core i5 760 (Quad Core), 1GB Radeon HD5770 (rebadged Mobility Radeon HD5870)
BTO for 2.93GHz Core i7 875K

Single Processor Mac Pro
2.8GHz Xeon UP W3530 (Quad Core), 512MB GeForce GT 340

Dual Processor Mac Pro
2.4GHz Xeon MP E5620 (Quad Core), 512MB GeForce GT 340

Mac Pro GPU BTOs: GTX 460 (either 768MB or 1GB version), 1GB Radeon HD 5870 (configured as 2 miniDP and 1 DVI so that the top PCIe plate can have the full width for ventilation), 1.5GB Fermi based Quadro
Mac Pro CPU BTOs: appropriate higher models including hexacores

Sadly I don't see Blu-ray drives or eSATA, but hopefully we'll finally get Firewire 3200. SD reader in the Mac Pro is almost certain seeing how things are rolling out. HDMI really isn't necessary for it's intended use.

It will make me really sad if these new cards do not support the MacPro3,1. I would imagine it would but you never know with Apple.

I think your iMac predictions will be right on the money, but I bet we'll see Mac Pro updates before iMac updates. Fortunately for me the current i7 iMac is still very relevant and any upgrades would be pretty minor speed bumps. Even the Mobility HD 4850 is a good performer relative to the Mobility HD 5870.

Yes, people should understand that high-end GPUs use more power than most high-end CPUs. A cooling-limited platform like the iMac is not the right place for a cutting-edge GPU. But, remember, today's mobile GPUs are much faster than the fastest desktop GPUs from yesteryear.
