He was talking about the Verizon iPhone. It doesn't matter that people wouldn't be buying the current one on AT&T, as Apple would still get their money on Verizon.

Remove exclusivity from the equation and Apple doesn't have to care about anyone but Apple.

News of a Verizon iPhone would stop a lot of us from buying an AT&T iPhone. It would delay the income for Apple which is not good.

Hmm. I still fail to see delayed income matters. Apple doesn't strike me as a company that lives from quarterly earnings report to quarterly earnings report. If you're still going to give them your money, they really shouldn't care.

I do not really see it as that. I see it as AT&T wanting people to purchase the phone now while it is just being released and talked about, not two months down the road when it becomes "old" news.

People are probably more likely to purchase the iPhone if they can pay less. Yes, there are people out there that will pay the higher prices, but in this economy, the iPhone is not an necessity when you already have one.

Then I guess you're not really familiar w/ how company financials work.

And yes, they are a publicly traded company, so every quarterly earnings report counts.

Any reason people are given to wait and not purchase the current release is bad for Apple as well as AT&T.
Yep, AAPL doesn't want to push a big quarter back 6 months ... time value of money. And I'd imagine AT&T could build a whale of a lawsuit for lost sales.

No matter, there's some type of agreement in place and we don't know the details.

Look for "secret" Ver-iPad testing to tip it.

Sorry, I still fail to see why it matters.

Take the iPad. Apple announced two versions, one shipping before the other. This didn't stop a million units from being sold before the second model came out, and it wouldn't have mattered if no units had been sold (as a result of people waiting for the second), because they would have then gone on to buy the same number of units from Apple. Assuming identical prices for a Verizon and AT&T iPhone, the same situation applies... doesn't it?

Those two items were launched very close together and it made sense for Apple to present them during the same function in one big launch. Also, no 3G device would have made Apple look bad. They needed to announce it.

Now if the 3G iPad had been delayed 6 months, perhaps they would have announced later.

Also, you keep ignoring that AT&T and Apple still have a partnership. Until a Verizon iPhone is official and imminent, Apple will not announce it in order not to hurt their current partner.

Doubt that.
Apple or any company in general want to you to purchase now and not sit around and wait for their next product to be released.
Like Geckotek said above, their quarterly earnings and stock would take a huge hit.

Right, right, of course. I've been talking hypothetical simultaneous announcement of the 4th gen iPhone on AT&T and Verizon with one launching later.

As for their stock taking a hit, that happens at every Keynote regardless of what is announced... :p

Ah...if the launch is simultaneous, of course Apple would announce them both.

What most of us are assuming though is that IF a Verizon iPhone were to come this fall, Apple wouldn't announce it this early.

But wouldn't the fallout be similar or identical to that following the original iPhone price drop? We'd have thousands of people who had either extended or entered new contracts with AT&T at the late June (again, hypothetical) iPhone release, and then a few months later Apple announces a Verizon iPhone.

Think of the outcry. People furious at Apple and AT&T, having entered contracts out of which they can't get without paying over $300 when they would have bought the phone from Apple anyway, just on a different provider.

I just feel that the result of a delayed release would pale in comparison to a delayed announcement.

Some people will be upset, but that's really a completely different situation and I think most reasonable people will understand that. If for no other reason, they won't even know when a deal was agreed upon. Perhaps there isn't a signed deal yet? No signed deal = no announcement.

If a Verizon iPhone comes, we will most likely get 2-3 month notice at most. So a fall delivery would mean a late summer announcment.

Stockholders won't be mad, and that's who management has a fiduciary duty to.

And realistically, Apple "should" provide a competitive option to AT&T for Apple owners. Service issues have just now become a big enough issue to address.

In any case this thread is pointless because Verizon themselves already (rather a spokesman that speaks for the company) said they have no plans for the iPhone. In other words, they won't carry it for a long time

Because we all know spokesman are reliable? If I recall they were denying the Droid prior to it's release as well. It's all about sales, they want them, but they know the iphone won't be coming quite yet.

My personal belief on the matter is september is when it'll be released. Mostly because that's when Daring Fireball speculated, and he's usually a lot more on top of these rumors then 'Thestreet'. And you know there's also that inner child in me that doesn't want to wait so that's also why I believe lol.

But I think if they're going to announce it WWDC seems like the perfect time. Especially if they want to do a late summer release, get the pre-orders rolling, and the hype up. My reasoning for this is also because Apple seems to stick to certain release schedules.

Summer - iPhone's

Fall - iPod's

Winter - (now iPad I suppose)

Spring - Macbooks/iMac

but you know, it being the one last thing at the end of the ipod key note in september wouldn't be that surprising either I suppose.

Really?

The Verizon spokesmodel MacRumors quoted said "immediate future" ..... you have better info?

You're ignoring way too many factors.

Ok so this morning many people that were previously not eligible
for ATT upgrade pricing until November have suddely had the
dates bumped up - yesterday I was 11/20/2010, now this
morning I am eligible now...

Does anyone think that this along with the new $375 ETF is more
evidence that Verizon is gonna get the Iphone in November or
eaily 2011?

Remember, AT&T did this for allot of people last year as well and the iPhone stayed with AT&T.

By the way, my upgrade date changed from 11/20 to eligible now as of 12 AM this morning. I now have three iPhones I can upgrade.

Jesus Christ. THere is not going to be a Verizon iPhone at least till next year. Even their own VP said just as much.

Furthermore, AT&T did the same damn thing last year. This means nothing except they want to sell more iPhone's early and that the phone will be out before June 20th.
