2012-09-19 11:30am PST - Status moves to Shipped from In Progress, but no tracking info.
2012-09-19 10:30pm PST - Tracking info supplied for UPS. The ups.com tracking history shows that it was ready for shipping at 6:10pm CDT, was picked up by a UPS agent at 7:00pm CDT, and then left Memphis, TN at 11:30pm CDT.
Interesting to note that it took 4.5 hours from when the UPS agent scanned it for pickup until it flew out of Memphis. Probably due to loading the trucks, driving to the airport, scanning before takeoff, waiting on the runway, etc. Chances are high that since they are going to a major UPS hub, they had TONS of iPhones going everywhere in the country to load up which took hours.
So then I signed up for the SMS alerts on UPS' site, to get notified when the tracking changes, and it immediately sent me the current status, which was IN TRANSIT to Louisville, KY.
This is information that didn't exist on the web tracking. I deduced that it was on flight UPS711 from Memphis to Louisville and I watched it fly and land on FlightAware (
http://flightaware.com/live/flight/UPS711). Pretty awesome!
Now I'm figuring out which flight it'll take next. Since it will deliver to the SF Bay Area, it'll probably go to Oakland next, considering the next two flights out of Louisville that are headed my way are for Oakland (2:26am EDT and 3:23am EDT). I guess it all depends on how long it'll take to sort and get loaded onto the flights. It could layover in another airport/hub (like Denver, etc) on the way over, but doubtful considering UPS usually does hub-to-hub unless there are specific overrides.
So much fun to watch it on a map in realtime. Too bad there isn't a fully integrated solution where you can just provide it a tracking number, and it figures out which flights and shows you in realtime where your package goes. I imagine that would be useful to a lot of people, not just us insane Apple addicts
