I need to call and see if I can kill 'em with kindness.

I'm preordering the iPhone 4S tonight for my wife, but I'm not eligible until December 26th. I've bought every iPhone since the original (which I got on launch) and while I could wait the two months until I'm eligible, it would be nice to get it early.

Well- Look at it this way - at least with a date that far out- you can justify spending the extra $250 (5 months benefit). In my case, with a 11/19 date, I'd essentially be spending $250 for an extra month. Much harder to justify. :)
The way I see it, no matter your upgrade date, you're getting $200-250 for your i4 (if you have one, that is), then buying it for $450 - $200-250 = $200-250 = ~normal price, no?

But buying it fully subsidized and still getting $200-250 for the old iPhone 4 would be a much better scenario.

EDIT: I don't understand how this is working. How are some people being bumped up and others aren't ESPECIALLY if they say it's not in their control. Can I make them just give it to me at the $199 price instead of the $449? Also I thought that ordering through Apple meant you could get it for $399...is that not true anymore?

When he came back, he said that he could move up the date for any/all other phones- but not the iPhone. Said they are just provide the network for the iPhone. ???

Maybe I'll get lucky like the last few folks and I'll discover my date has moved up late tonight/early tomorrow.

It can be done...

I've made money every year selling my old iPhone and upgrading with subsidized pricing. This year I wasn't eligible until 11/25 but I just talked to a manager at the AT&T store today and she moved my upgrade up after I threatened to go to Verizon. She put a note in the system so I can't do it ever again though and I have to preorder from her store.

I talked to 3 employees at a different store about my options yesterday and they said they couldn't do anything. You just have to find a cool manager.

show us the way....

This was my post in another thread....

Dialed 611, went throughout the options to speak with someone...

At first they were saying no this can't be done. I said my friend switched theirs (Thanks Chaos123x) and she said no that they can guarantee that it (my friends request) didn't go through. Still being polite I asked if I could speak with someone else. Transferred me to a manager, she was already aware of the situation so I didn't have to repeat myself (good job ATT) as soon as she finished repeating what my request was (move my upgrade up) I chimed in and said "I checked my eligibility a week ago and it was listed for october and then check it today and it s says 11/25" (thanks again Chaos123x) "I am just asking to be eligible to pre-order by this Friday at the discounted rate"

She looked over my account and said "ok" ill submit a change request and you will get a text in 24-72 hours ... she said it usually takes 2 days.... the text will say the change has been complete and then I can go online and see that I will be eligible.

I was nice the whole time and kept thanking them for taking the time to talk to me.

Now I will be nervously awaiting my text.

The first person I talked to said it couldn't be done, not with the iPhone but any other phone she could. She told me no 3 times (I asked 3 different ways) That's when the manager comes in...

The manager couldn't make the change either BUT she could submit a request to have it changed by another department. Which is what happened. My date was showing 11/25/11 yesterday. As of now, I can upgrade at the discounted rate.

It can be done...

How did you get that done?

I need to call up my AT&T store and see if I can talk to a manager. I just called in to the support line and said it would be cheaper to go to Verizon, the lady said her manager wasn't available and there wasn't really anything she could do besides what her stuff told her.

I just don't understand why some people are getting it moved up and others aren't.

Its nice that they will swear up and down it cannot be done then you find out that than can get it done pretty easily if they want.

On another note how is saying our computer says your not eligible and it's impossible to change good customer service even if it was true?

seems like people that got bumped up were originally eligible sometime in november...any luck from the Feb 2012 batch?

That's pretty far off... I dont' see that happening.

What sucks is that mine is in December because I was initially waiting for the white iPhone 4 until I realized it wouldn't be coming. So I wasted a month waiting.

I've called 3 time and got nothing. I'm thinking of calling 1 more time and just straight up asking for a manager, what do you guys think?

I have sort of a complicated question that I'm guessing someone here will know the answer to.

Here is the scenario: My iPhone 4 is eligible for an upgrade on 11/19. My wife's 3GS (bought march 2010) is eligible on 11/4. Before that we both have to pay $250. I'd like to preorder the phone for my wife anyway, because she needs it and the extra $250 will be a wash after we sell our phones.

My question is this: can I order the phone as if it was for my line, then give it to her to use, and then still use her 11/4 eligibility to order my phone a couple weeks earlier? So basically my question is whether ultimately attaching the phone to her line will use up her 11/4 upgrade date, even though I originally order it as if it was for me.

Its really getting old calling them and having someone tell you in no way is it possible to have an upgrade request submitted, and when you say that you know there is, the response is still no there is not.

Yes- I've def done this math a few times - aiming to justify it. I'm actually sitting on an EBay Instant sale offer for my i4 that I placed on announcement day for $325.50. Need to get it in the mail by early next week to actually get it.

So... the damage would not be bad net net. But- as the other guy pointed out, if I can get $250 for my i4 in a month, then I'll actually make $50 on the transaction vs spending $125 - for a total swing of $175.

So for me, the real question is- is it worth $175 to get the phone 30 days early.

Prediction: I'll mull it over right up until 3:00am (ET) and then spend $175 without hesitation

If you're on a family plan you can just add a line to get the subsidized 4s, switch the sim with your current sim, then cancel the data.

You'll be left with a $10/month line. It's worth it to me so I can have an upgrade available yearly.

Sometimes, in my situation, it's cheaper to cancel a current line and open a new line with an iPhone.

Yup. Though, the last guy I talked to said AT&T may just move everyone up at the last minute.

Honestly, after spending about 40 minutes on the phone with these people (I got really close with one but of course I dropped the call and then for some reason when they tried calling me back, it wouldn't pick up), I don't even know if it's worth it. If they push me up, great. If not, it's just another month.

Called AT&T, was told they could move up the line that's not eligibile under 11/25 by 30 days but i'd have to call back to have a manager manually over ride it.

How are people getting eligibility moved up? I spoke with someone in business care. Not sure i trust that they will move it up when i call back.

Part of me is saying "it's just another month," and the other part is saying IT'S A WHOLE MONTH. Plus, who knows how crazy people will go for the phone. It might still be sold out when I'm eligible on 11/18. As of now, I'm planning on preordering tonight for $650 and selling my phone for $400. After taxes and fees, I'll probably be at around $300-325 for the phone which is fine with me. "Free" (after selling my phone) next month would be great, but having the device early, as well as peace of mind, is worth $300 to me.

I wasn't interested to read 13 pages until I gathered everyones issues-

I'm sure most of you bought the first iphone in 2007 (I switched to AT&T for it FROM Sprint)

However- Every NEW iPhone from 3G-3GS-iPhone 4 (last year).

With the iphone4, I was not sure how I was still able to upgrade every year, but I eventually got curious to check my upgrade date which was supposed to be months later. Then, EXACTLY when the iPhone 4 was ready for sale, and my upgrade was changed instantly, and I ordered it.

This makes sense for me since my "upgrade" is currently at end Feb '12, but I'd expect to see it changing tomorrow when all the pre-orders show up.

Besides- I sort of expect to see this thread to blow up tomorrow when a bunch people say... "I GOT AN UPGRADE!!!!!!!!" etc..

That's only 10 dollars cheaper than the "early upgrade price."

Early upgrade price = phone price + 250
New line = phone price + 240 (10*24 months)
