I got the BIG no from AT&T via 611. The guy acted like he never heard of being able to upgrade early with previous iPhones. It makes no sense, a guy at work and I got ours the same day, same plan, no late payments and he is eligible and I'm not until 11/25. Weird.

Edit: I meant 11/15

I also just got off the phone with a buddy that works at an AT&T store. He said that if your eligibility doesn't change the best they can do is let you upgrade 11/1 if your eligible in Nov. But you have to upgrade at a corporate store.

If you're on a family plan you can just add a line to get the subsidized 4s, switch the sim with your current sim, then cancel the data.

You'll be left with a $10/month line. It's worth it to me so I can have an upgrade available yearly.

Sometimes, in my situation, it's cheaper to cancel a current line and open a new line with an iPhone.

I thought this was a good idea but I checked the AT&T site and you have to keep the data plan for the duration of the contract.

That's only 10 dollars cheaper than the "early upgrade price."

Early upgrade price = phone price + 250
New line = phone price + 240 (10*24 months)

No it's not. If you go the early upgrade route, you're contract will be extended. If you wanted to get the next iPhone, you'll have to early upgrade again.

2(phone price + 250)

Going the route I mentioned, you'll have an upgrade available next year for less than the added cost of one early upgrade.

This was my post in another thread....

The first person I talked to said it couldn't be done, not with the iPhone but any other phone she could. She told me no 3 times (I asked 3 different ways) That's when the manager comes in...

The manager couldn't make the change either BUT she could submit a request to have it changed by another department. Which is what happened. My date was showing 11/25/11 yesterday. As of now, I can upgrade at the discounted rate.

Hmm...I'll call back and try again. They're seriously screwing with me though, they reduced my eligibility by ONE FREAKING DAY!

I called 611 the other day and they switched my date from 11/26/11 to 10/7/11 no problem. The girl acted like it was no problem and even told me it was a courtesy for early iPhone adopters. You have to call and ask. They are not doing this if you don't call. She said that they are not advertsing this promotion and must be done by a case by case basis.

I think you have to buy a iPhone on launch to be eligible.

If the sim stays in a smartphone, you do. If you "lost" your iPhone and are forced to use a dumb phone, they can't make you pay for data you have no way of using.

You don't stop paying for that 2nd line magically. It's an added 10/month cost over the life of your contract, plus should you ever decide to cancel, your contract end date will be a year apart for each phone, meaning you must wait it out or pay ETFs. It can be cheaper, but you must always upgrade each year and cancel without having to pay ETFs to make it worthwhile.

Just called 611. First time I called they said they couldn't do a thing. Called today and the nice lady was "able" to move it from Nov 25th 2011 to Nov 1st, though it hasn't been reflected on the site yet.

Here's hoping for a last minute change of heart.

Have a heart AT&T. There are middle class folks here begging for some love.

I didn't say you stopped paying for it, that's what the $240 is.

Hmmm anyone with a November date can upgrade at a AT&T store on the first. They go by the month not the actual day. Might be different if your buying from somewhere else.

The key is to get them to let you upgrade tomorrow so you can actually preorder the thing. Otherwise you will be waiting a long time past november 1st.

Just called to cancel and they want $440 for all three of my lines. I might just do it only because they decided to screw EARLY ADOPTERS and that makes no sense to me. I'd rather pay $440 + $399 and jump ship to Verizon, even though I don't like Verizon at all. Hell, I'd save money per month after that anyway.

How did they screw you? When you upgraded, you signed a 2-year agreement. You knew this. I don't get why people feel they are entitled to early upgrades...

Created a new thread about this, but I imagine I can talk about it here, since I noticed it happened to some other members.

I've been eligible for an upgrade for nearly a few months (*639#, on the ATT website, Amazonwireless, Apple's checker, etc.). Now, all of a sudden today, it says that my number will be eligible for upgrade on Nov 25, 2011. What is going on?!

EDIT: I just realized this date is 18 months from when I got the iPhone 4 at launch. Why have I been eligible for a few months now then? I knew I should've upgraded to the Galaxy S 2 this past weekend...

EDIT2: It looks like it has happened to some other people as well.

EDIT3: Spoke to CS, they simply read a standard response about how your eligibility can change at anytime, blah blah. When I told them that I made no rate changes, etc, the CS rep went quiet and re-read from the manual again. Sigh.

Well, after speaking to a sales manager, they said they won't be able to move my upgrade eligibility date back to where it was (June), even though the system changed it for no reason. As soon as I mentioned that I am considering something other than the iPhone 4S, they said, "OH, in that case, I would be glad to sell you something else tonight." :/

They screwed me because I was eligible for full subsidized price when the white iPhone 4 came out. I almost purchased it but held out for this. Now I've been pushed to November 18th.

They did it to everybody.

Stopped by At&t store today. Store manager ended up assisting me. Asked him about eligibility and it changing. He chuckled and said there has been a steady stream of people coming into the store to have their date pushed up. He said a couple of things:

1) Eligibility is based on many factors (i.e. length of time with At&t, payment history, monthly bill and "add ons" that you have on your account-data plans, messaging..etc) He was honest and said didn't know the exact formula for determination because so many factors were taken into account.

2) He was very confident on one thing, eligibility. He said eligibility doesn't just change on its own, there has to be some qualifying event. I.E. change to a plan that costs less,or late payments. Most common issue is late payments.

Take it FWIW

Called 611 and got my upgrade eligibility changed no problem

So, just called 611 and got my eligibility changed from 11/18/11 to being upgrade eligible now.

Lady I talked to(and was pretty nice to her) said usually they can just push up the eligibility if you're within 30 days of your upgrade date but she was going to "message" the "other department" to see if she could do anything. Made some small talk with her while she was waiting for a response. Then was told ok you're eligible to upgrade now and if you do the 639 thing you'll see it's already in effect. Thank you Miss really appreciate your help. I didn't threaten to or even mention anything about I'm gonna cancel my service etc. etc.

Total time to get my eligibility changed: 13 minutes.

Easy as pie. People stop bitching and start calling.

Wow, trying again. Which option did you choose on the menu? Maybe there are better reps in a certain department.

0-then just waited for a CS rep.

Thanks. I went to the upgrade department but, if this fails, I will try again.

No dice. :(

I did learn something new though. Standard and early upgrades are two different entities. If I use my early upgrade and pay an extra $250, my standard upgrade will not change. It will stay at November 18th, so I'll be able to upgrade to the next iPhone or even purchase a second 4S if I ever wanted to.
