Here are a few things everyone should know...
Att will not move your upgrade date up except for extremely rare circumstances. Wanting the latest iPhone isn't rare, FYI. People who think they are moving dates up at will just don't know about their policy changes. A couple months ago they made a policy change that will allow you to upgrade anytime in the month you were eligible. So if you were ready to upgrade on October 31st, you can now do it as of October 1st.
Secondly, raging about not being able to upgrade to every iPhone is dumb. What are we, 8 yr olds in a toy store? And to cancel and switch providers because you can't get your way is even dumber. But here's the kicker, att doesn't care. When they subsidize the cost of an iPhone for a customer every year there is hardly any profit at all, if any. Your share lines for 9.99 a month don't yield profit for att until around the 16th month of their contract. And now with the unlimited mobile to mobile to any network, many customers are lowering their primary line's revenue by going down in minutes since their vast majority of calls are to other cell phones. In return, profit margins are dropping for att. It's simply business.
In a related note, they don't care about the iPhone anymore. They have made it very clear to their sales reps that they should be focusing more on selling the android 4g devices as the profit margin is greater. Basically, att is losing their ass on iPhones.
Another policy change they made was back in January/February. Before they used to base upgrade eligibility on your revenue and making payments on time. I have actually seen people out of contract not eligible for phones because they pay their bill 2 months late every month. Att doesn't even care if they lose these customers as the cost of sending delinquent notices and monitoring accounts outweighs their revenue. Anyways, many customers could upgrade every 12 months because of their revenue. Well, due to a decrease in profits, they changed the policy as I mentioned. Anyone who had an "early" upgrade date prior to this policy change kept it. For example, I got my iPhone 4 in December 2010 and since day 1 my primary line was eligible for upgrade in December 2011 whereas my secondary line was august 2012. Anyone upgrading or getting new lines after the policy change receives an upgrade at 18-20 months, regardless of revenue.
The reality is simple. A vast majority of customers will wait til their upgrade date and get a new phone then. You will notice a lot of androids because this is their big push. Since the policy change att has been getting some of the nicer android devices including the Atrix back in February which at the time was the fastest smartphone in the world. There will be some customers who think they are sticking it to att and will cancel and head to Verizon. Guess what, their policies are pretty damn close to being the same as att and even a few policies they have that are worse. Att knows they have the better iPhone since they have simultaneous voice and data and also hspa+ which means their iPhone is significantly faster than Verizon's that is running on their untouched 3G network. When you fall off LTE on att you will have hspa+ so the speed drop isn't as drastic. Go to Verizon and switch from LTE to their 3G, it's literally like going from cable Internet down to dialup. So to a large sum of the unloyal customers who have to have the latest device, this is huge. In att.'s eyes, they feel waiting the extra few months is worth it to keep with the superior data network and if it's not then go enjoy Verizon. People think the grass is always greener on the otherwise until they get there.
P.S. Att has a program called flipswap now. You can mail your phone in for an att gift card to use towards accessories or even your phone bill. My iPhone 16gb is worth 235 dollars which would pretty much cover the 250 premium if I wanted to upgrade early at the 449 pricing. Not a bad deal for being able to get the latest device after only having my phone for 10 months.
