According to the AT&T rep I spoke with any upgrade other than paying full price will reset upgrade eligibility. Like you I was considering paying the extra $250 but when I was told it would push my next upgrade eligibility back 18 mos. I reconsidered.

I'm eligible next month so I'll see what I can sell my iPhone 4 for then. If I can make it close to a wash buying the 4S I'll buy.

So be aware if you pay the $250 now and then want the next years iPhone too you'll have to pay $250 again. If you wait until you are eligible for a subsidized 4S then you'll just pay the $250 for next years phone.

This is what I was wondering about, if thats the case I will just wait for my upgrade to be available and only pay the $250 once.

I may even skip this gen, wait for my contract to be up in a year and switch carriers for the next gen, I am starting to really dislike the way AT&T does business.

I've bought an iPhone on every launch starting with the original. About 6 months ago we made my wife the primary account holder to get a discount through her work. Now My upgrade isn't till february...... Not happy because I broke my iphone4 and have been getting by with an old 3G. Was really Hoping to upgrade

Ooh, I know what I'll do since I can't upgrade to an iPhone 4S until December 18th. I'll wait in line on release day for a 4S, then sell my spot in line for $450. hahaha

I'm really not very upset about not being able to upgrade until next week - which makes me wonder if I even really need to. Then again, at worst, I'll just have to wait an extra month for the 5.
Oops, I meant next month. Regardless, until Infinity Blade 2 comes out, I'm not going to be losing too much sleep over this. I'll stop by a corporate store and bug a manager as my last shot.

Eligibility is 12/1/11, I cannot believe they are not letting me upgrade now with so little time until Dec 1st :(

Use her upgrade to replace your phone. See the upgrade guide at the top of the forum.

Its either the demand is low or people are being held back by their upgrade eligibility because people I just know were just able to order their phone without even a hiccup. This is in stark contrast to the fiasco we saw with the iPhone 4. In light of the subdued Verizon launch, is this the future of iPhone launches?

it's just not that exciting of a phone this time

I was able to walk into an Apple Store a couple days after the 3GS launch and get a phone no problem. I think a factor is the fact that, by only changing the internals, Apple's production process for the phone is already pretty streamlined, as opposed to a completely new phone where they are probably just getting production up to speed at the same time the thing launches.

Probably because the universal demand is now spread between 3 carriers unlike the iPhone 4 launch which was only with 1.

As much as I want to just pull the trigger and buy the 4S, I can't bring myself to spend over double the subsidized price. (My upgrade date is 11-30-11) I'll wait this one out. Plus, has everyone forgotten all the antenna bugs of the iPhone 4? What about other bugs? No product is perfect. Anyone want to see how it'll perform first?

with those upgrade prices, I might as well buy an unlocked iPhone 4S and skip the 2y commitment + I can use my grandfathered unlimited data plan....

This is where I'm leaning. Plus- if you take into acct for the likely higher re-sale value for a the used unlocked phone next year - it makes even more sense.

Just checked online and my eligibility for a new iPhone has been moved up from not eligible until November 2011 (checked yesterday) to eligible for a new phone today.

Even today my 11/23 date has not changed. I called earlier and waited on hold for an 1 hour 40 minutes before the first person answered my call. They stated they could not change the upgrade date. I told them I would like to cancel my service. They then transferred me to retentions (5 minutes after that department had opened).

I told them I would like to cancel and switch to sprint. They told me they couldn't change the date, but finally took $10 off my data plan a month (permanent), and then gave me a $25 credit for the next three months. Better than nothing I guess.

It was like a 2 hour 20 minute call.

well that's lame. Not eligible until November 18th. Have had the iPhone 4 since the day before launch. Ah well. Wasn't sold on the 4s anyway. Looks like I'll skip it like I did the 3G.

My date is 11/25. AT&T is only willing to change my date by 30 days. So, if I go to an AT&T Corporate Store, I can buy it on 10/25. Anywhere else, I would have to wait until 11/25.

My home button is giving me grief (intermittently). Some say its software, but I am not convinced. I guess I'll see what happens to it on IOS 5.

What did you say for them to give you the credit? Are you ordering the phone now or waiting until December?

I asked for the retention department. I told them that even with my ETF ($180) it will be better to go with Sprint and get the new iPhone. She mentioned that they don't have unlImited data. I proved her wrong. She could not change the date but gave the credit and she placed the order for me. So the phone will be "like a full discount" because of the credit.

We both were polite all the time.

Ha, AT&T is trying to lose customers...

Jul 18, 2011
As a valued customer, we can offer you a full upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and $18 up grade fee.

Now its:

Oct 4, 2011
A full discount on a standard device or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 02/16/2012. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a 2-yr commitment pricing +$250 and an $18 upgrade fee...
After three separate phone calls to determine why this happened on my >$100 account,

AT&T Customer Service found it to be an error, submitted an "emergency adjustment request", and I was able to pre-order last night at the full discount/$199 rate.

It took some time, but AT&T got it right -- but they couldn't figure out why the eligibility had been altered.

My date was 11/16 but my wife and mom were eligible. WTF! I called and was told there was nothing that can be done. I asked for a manager and told the operator I wanted my upgrade date moved up or detailed justification as to why their phones were eligible and mine was not. In the end, rather than get on the phone himself, the guy's manager told him to go ahead and place my early upgrade at regular price so my wife and I both have white 64s on the way.

Seems to be very YMMV but be polite and vigilant at the same time and you'll get your early upgrade.

Nope.

Listen, I'm pretty skeptical at this point because I've called in 4 times now and have been polite, have asked for all the right folks and have been turned down every time. Every person, 9 total at this point and this is the line-

"We cannot change your upgrade eligibility per our policy"

I've also talked about folks having their accounts credited to offset the $250 early upgrade fee. They all tell me that this is strictly against policy and will result in disciplinary action against the employee.

They've been kind people all around and have given me some discounts on my service plus a promise of a $50 credit when I buy it on my eligibility date, but no change in eligibility or immediate credit.

Done. Just gonna grow some delayed gratification and wait until Nov 25th.

my wife and i both got our iPhone 4 on launch day
my upgrade date is different than hers (its her account)

I just spent 51 minutes on the phone with ATT. Have 4 premiere lines since 2005.

Talked to the customer service rep, apologize, apologize, apologize. Sorry sir, cant do anything. I was really going to cancel 3 or up to all 4 lines. It made more financial sense to change companies.

Transferred to "Resolutions" told her my issue. She said it changed to only the primary is eligible (I am the primary and ordered a 64gb that I would cancel). I was extremely polite and gave here the call that she would play to her family.

She gave me a $45 credit for 3 months and made my family messaging ($30 a month) free for 6 months.

It definitely offsets the $250 difference in the phone price. But now I may not upgrade that line.

Thought I'd update you guys on something since I was posting here a bunch last night.

Ordered my 4S and my eligibility date was pushed back to May 2013. If anyone remembers, I posted about a rep telling me that EARLY upgrade will not affect STANDARD upgrade date. Some people here said the same, others said its as false.

Seems like it was false, so I called AT&T and complained. Told them that I was informed and that I'm out $250 and the only reason I paid it was to keep my upgrade.

This rep finally told me he's going to credit me $250. It still hasn't posted to my account though. How long did it take for you guys to receive your credit?
