So has anyone gotten their dates moved up by calling AT&T customer service?

Just got off phone with them, and they currently have no info on a mass move up of eligibility dates. Not to say that won't change in the next 24 hours.

According to ATT I'm not eligible until Mid Feb 2012, so they want $250+ phone cost to get the 4S.

Or I can early terminate for $175, go to Sprint and get 4S and safe $75.

Makes no sense, but if they don't bump me up I will seriously have to consider leaving.

I called last night because one of my lines is eligible on Nov 18.

After whining for a while she said that she could move the date to Nov 1st. but I would have to go to an AT&T store because she can not make changes on line.

My early termination fee is $90.- on that line... I will try to talk to a supervisor today.

Talked to AT&T

Hey Everyone,

I just got off the phone with AT&T (I should let you know that I am a business customer, although I'm not sure how much it matters).

I dialied 611 from my iPhone and then hit the number 1 to move to the next gatekeeper and then hit the number 5 to talk to a rep. Upon talking to a rep, I realized that it was CHEAPER for me to cancel my contract ($175) then to upgrade ($250 + cost of iPhone).

I nicely explained that this really made no sense and that I was probably going to leave to go to Sprint cause I've been a long time customer and I've had each iPhone. The gentleman put me on hold and transferred me to a a different department. I spoke with a nice gentleman who told me that they could "VERY VERY LIKELY" do something for me, but not until it's in the system on Friday. He told me to dial 611 and then hit the number 7, followed by the number 5 and on Friday I would be pushed to that same department and that they would take care of me.

Again, I'm not sure what's going to happen, but that's what I'm going to try. I dont NEED an iPhone 4S, but If i can get it at full discount, I'll probably get it.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I'm shown as not eligible until 11/25, as well... Kinda bites considering I got my phone on launch day last year. What's going on here?

The new phone would be nice to have, I can wait, but the thing for me is that I have been loyal to ATT and this is what happens?

So what happens when you purchase an iPhone from another carrier and sign with them? Do you get the discounted price?

Have you been following this thread (and several others)?

You bought the iPhone 4 sixteen months ago. The contract you agreed to (in exchange for a $200 subsidy) states that you are eligible for an upgrade in twenty-four months. However, AT&T is rewarding certain customers, based on certain factors (cost of monthly bill, payment history, length of being a customer, etc) with earlier upgrades. These early upgrades are ranging anywhere from twelve to twenty months. You will see early iPhone 4 adopters in this thread reporting upgrades times of now, November, February, etc.

I upgraded to the 4 from the 3GS no problem after just a year, same with the 3GS from the 3G. Now, everything's different? Hmm...

Exactly the point I tried to make earlier in the thread. Why piss people off for the one month difference. Most would probably be fine if they went off contract in two years plus the one month.
The other thing is that if At&t breaks their early upgrade iphone routine for launch day buyers as they are seeming to do now, then that has to make people think, wait, if I wait until X date that they say I will be eligible to upgrade on, then thats going to push my eligibility date back even further when the Iphone 5 (which should be alot more in demand) actually does come out, so might be an even better reason to just stick with one's current iphone4 & skip the 4S.

I was told the same thing. I wonder if Apple is aware that ATT is telling customers this.

Call back Friday when everyone has already ordered theirs at midnight? Just move the dates today and Thursday and give everyone the same shot.

Booo $250 charge for an upgrade too. Just reread the text. Guess I'll just wait. If anything, probably just skip out on the 4S for now. I can survive on the new iOS. but ill have to wait on that too since mine is jail broken. Fml XP

Hmmm if I have to wait till late November to upgrade, I might just end up using the money towards Christmas presents.

The 4S isn't really that compelling.

Ditto this, except that I've been a customer since 1993. Service here is Christ-awful (multiple dropped calls EVERY SINGLE DAY) and they refused to give me a microcell despite my well-documented service issues back when they were still giving them to people (they gave one to my parents about 2 weeks prior), so I'm at the end of my rope with AT&T. Seriously considering heading to Verizon at this point. If I do, I'll get the 4S with them and drop my AT&T line down to the minimum plan & ride it till the contract ends. Yes, I'll miss out on alleged "customer loyalty" perks, but at this point the horrific service far outweighs any perks they could possibly offer.

Why did you stay with a company that is so bad in your area for almost two decades?

I bought my IP4 a month or so after it came out and am only eligible for a 12/25/11 upgrade....

all the other times i had been moved up.

same with me, but I can't upgrade until 12/18/11. I wonder if everyone's upgrade eligability would change this Friday when preorders for 4S start.

My mom and I had a upgrade eligibility date of 1/18/12 earlier today(Bought the iPhone 4 on August 17,2010). I'm the only one with an iphone and her eligibility date moved up to 12/1/11 but mine stayed the same.

That's because it takes AT&T longer to recoupe the money they subsidized on your iPhone than they did your moms phone. She gets a quicker update date because they've already made their money back on her.

Last time they made everyone who was eligible in the next six months eligible on day 1. I only need 35 days.

Different situation this go round and last year most believe they only did it because they knew VZW was getting the iPhone. I'm due for an upgrade as of 12/4 and I'm willing to wait it out until then.

I'm sure they are aware. They're the ones who are telling AT&T.

Last year, it was Apple who told AT&T to bump up eligibility by six months.

Why would Apple want to sell fewer phones on launch? They love to say, "This was the most successful launch ever, and we sold 18 bazillion phones!!". I cannot see Apple asking AT&T to restrict who can buy the phone for that reason alone. Additionally, AT&T is the one who has to eat the subsidy, not Apple, therefore it is solely in AT&T's interest to restrict the upgrade (though you could argue it isn't in their interest given the potential for lost customers, etc.).

One aspect in favor of att is the possibility that an iPhone 5 is due out within months, and if we blew our subsidy now, there'd be no way they'd do it again with only 5 months paid, and the early adopters would be the most pissed at being blocked out of an iPhone 5.

Because it's part of the deal they made together.

Apple tells AT&T to bump up the iPhone 4 upgrade eligibilities in 2010, in exchange for bumping back eligibilities in 2011. Early upgrade fees in 2011 potentially recoup the cost of early subsidies in 2010.

Well I just called 611 and talk to a representative I told her my date was pushed back to 11-26-11. She put me on hold for one second and came back and she said sorry for the inconvience I have set your new date to 10-7-11 is there anything else I can do for you? I asked why it was so easy to change the date, she said they were doing it as a courtesy for iPhone 4 early adopters that want the iPhone 4S. She then told me they are not doing it automactically or advertising it, She said that iPhone 4 early adopters have to call to have the new date changed on the account. Think she meant people who bought the old iPhone 4 in the first week of it's release.

Pretty easy for me.

I too preordered and received my iPhone 4 on day one in June of 2010. I'm showing an upgrade eligibility of 2/16/2012.

So I just got off the phone with AT&T customer service...and talked to their cancellation department.

It will cost me $90 to terminate my current AT&T 24-month commitment from June 2010 so weighing my options...paying an additional $250 to AT&T for an iPhone4S...it looks like it makes too much sense to just cancel my AT&T account and sign up with Verison. If I can get the iPhone4S at the $199/$299/$399 prices at Verison then I will save $160. Porting my number over is no big deal done that before.

When I asked why my upgrade eligibility was 2/16/2012 after purchasing the iPhone 4 on day one...while others were eligilble now or in November 2011...The AT&T customer service rep. told me eligility dates were based on plan ($/mo.), payment history, etc...when I addressed this with the termination department...the rep told me eligibility dates had nothing to do with monthly payments or data plans...and that Apple set the eligibility date.

I guess this is not to say...that Apple is not setting the eligibility dates based on $ amount of customer bills.

So...Verizon here I come...as long as I can get the discounted iPhones.

Any other issues I should know of before going to Verizon? Any Verizon iPhone customers out there. I live in Northern California so the wireless coverage should be fine with both carriers.
