Full price U.S. iPhones are not factory unlocked, they are just "no contract." However, they are still carrier specific. You can't take a Verizon iPhone to Sprint or vice versa or an ATT to T-Mob. You'd have to go to Europe to find a factory unlocked iPhone.

I would have assumed that the iPhone 4S is available as an Unlocked device since the iPhone 4 has been available at Apple Stores and Apple.com/store at $649 for a 16GB version fully Unlocked.

Calling Apple now...

i've been checking mine for the last week ten times a day. it just changed for me where I am now eligible for the subsidized price. finally! I called and complained before it changed a few times, but to no avail. I think they are pushing up dates if you got the iPhone 4 on launch. Be patient..i'm sure if you were eligible on day 1 before you will get your date moved up.

Called Apple...they informed me that the information that they seem to have simply indicate what the iPhone 4S is priced along with carriers. They can not confirm or deny that there will be an Unlocked version of the iPhone 4S at launch. In other words...we are not saying just yet!

I hope there will be.

An ATT manager told me today that an early upgrade scenario is not being offered because the iPhone does not look different that the iPhone 4.

He told me his store will authorize an early upgrade within 30 days of the date at no extra amount. My date is 11/17 so in theory I could go see him right after release and they would upgrade me.

I'd rather preorder. Luckily I have a Galaxy Tab line that has an available upgrade. I'm just going to use that upgrade and preorder with that. The ATT guy says just don't activate on the computer. Instead he says to bring the iPhone to the store and they will activate and make sure my lines are all in order like they should be.

In the US, full price iPhone 4 has been factory unlocked if bought from Apple for a few months now... it's currently unclear if the iPhone 4S will be the same.

I'm going to skip the 4S then. If I have to wait till March then Apple may very well put the 5 out mid summer as in the past. If so I'd have a 4S about 2-3 months before the next one hit.

Obviously the only holdup on the iPhone 4s has been software. Nothing else in it took over a year to design. Camera is great, but didn't take a year to do and the switching antennas is due to the known problem with the 4. A5 isn't new either. Software was holdup and I get everything except Siri on the software next week.

I skipped the 3GS. I went from 3G to 4. Looks like I will go from 4 to 5.

Thanks,

Please post reply Macguy76.

Getting straight answer from ATT is like hitting moving target.

According to AT&T. Discounts on the line have nothing to do with your eligibility dates or moving them up. I believe what they said, but I am still wondering why AT&T is not willing to make some of us happy?

New iPhone 4S at Subsidized price, new 2-year contract...Good for AT&T?

Apple couldn't confirm that they would have Unlocked iPhone 4S available at Launch. To me, unless you are getting the full discounted price, that would be the one to get.

True, but I don't see how they save any $ as they have to pay the ETF fee and if you have a grandfathered data or SMS plan you lose it which costs you in the long term.

The ETF is $90 (purchase on preorder on day one in June 2010). $90 is cheaper than than paying the additional $250 for the iPhone 4S if I want it now.

I had the unlimited grandfather data plan but downgraded to the cheaper data plan 4-5 months ago. Wasn't using enough data to warrant unlimited.

Well I just called 611 and they told me that it's not even them determining the update dates it's Apple. I'm able to upgrade at 11/18/11 and he said that some people (the "early adopters") we're bumped to the launch because apple deems them to be important but that was done all by computer.

He said that he would be able to bump my upgrade eligibility but i wouldn't be able to get an iPhone 4S, it would have to be a different brand

:( ugh

That's common. They can usually move the eligibility date for anything BUT an iphone.

This is insane! My upgrade date was 12/22/2011 for the longest time and I just checked it again and now it's 3/4/2012.

WTF

Ok, i'm sure this is a stretch, but if At&t keeps saying that it is apple setting the date & rewarding early adopters, - where did anyone that is getting the discount on Oct 7 order your iphone 4 from originally, Apple or At&t?
I ordered mine from at&t but you could have easily ordered your at&t iphone directly from apple as well - wonder if the people already in the Apple system are the ones that got the earlier date?

Now I doubt this is the case as it makes no sense - though the lack of any clarification as to why some people are getting the dates that they have makes equally no sense.

I bitch and moan but I'm not going to do anything.

It is cheaper for me to leave and go to Sprint or Verizon than it is for me to stay and buy it from AT&T... The ETF fee is cheaper than the upgrade fee... They don't seem to care.

I could leave like I said I would but I don't even want to pay the ETF and figure I will just wait...

But it pisses me off that they KNOW most people are just blowing smoke and wont really do it so I kind of don't want them to call my bluff and find me bluffing... I know they don't care about ME it is the numbers game... But I still don't want to do what they think I (and most people) are going to do.

Plus I don't think I can live without using voice and data at the same time... Can't do it.

I even went as far as hitting the cancel service prompt and spoke to a representative who said she was able to waive my $175 ETF but not bump up my upgrade date from 11/25/2011. I told her that it seemed a little off that you would rather lose me as a customer and waive an ETF than bump up my upgrade eligibility. Of course I still have a grandfathered "Unlimited Data" plan so I'm starting to believe that may factor in to one of their many "Early Upgrade Consideration Factors."

Bottom line is someone at AT&T dropped the ball because there is no clear sense as to what is going on over there. A simple company wide memo that clearly labels what their stance is on early upgrade eligibility concerning the 4s would have sufficed and saved a lot of hassle.

What did you say to get them to waive the ETF?

Basically repeated my statments above and inquired about how to cancel my contract. I was more than polite just persistent and repetitious as to what I was trying to achieve. I think specifically in my case they were woolly to waive the ETF because of my unlimited data plan.

Well I have an interesting one.

Just got off the phone w/ AT&T. Did not argue, just asked why it was Nov if I just paid 500 last June.

She said no problem. If I want to upgrade, she will credit my bill 250 as soon as the extension goes through on the order if I choose to.

Will call me Friday, and notated my account accordingly.

So if I want the 4s I can have the 32 for 299. Net.

Business customer w/3 lines (iPhones) but I don't think that made a difference or not. Tbh, it was rather painless- surprisingly.

Fair to be sure IMO.

Well after calling and having the rep tell me that he can't change my date from 11/18/11 I get this e-mail about "changes to my account"

Thank you for choosing AT&T for your business wireless needs!

.... so confused lol

Weird. I renewed my 2 year contract when I pre-ordered the iPhone last year, but when I checked yesterday (*639#), it said that I was eligible for an upgrade. I'm not taking a chance, however. I have my wife's number on my account but our accounts are staggered by a year in terms of our contract. It works out well because she really isn't into the smartphones, so for the past 3 years, I just alternate which line I upgrade, I get the new iPhone and she gets the iPhone-handmedown LOL
