Verizon has a lot of advantages over AT&T. It has the largest 3G network coverage in the U.S. More importantly, it doesn’t have the distinction of being the nation’s most despised wireless carrier. I basically gave up on my iPhone at CES in Las Vegas this week and relied on my Verizon Droid 2 instead. It’s utterly embarrassing that AT&T still has these kinds of problems more than three years since the iPhone’s debut.

Gecko, PC Magazine's testing that showed AT&T's network as somewhat faster was done in big cities. Where there's heavy congestion. Note that I said "when not overloaded" - the real difference in speed between the network technologies becomes apparent in rural areas, where AT&T consistently gets around 4mbps, and Verizon around 1.5.

In my experience, there is no 3G service in rural areas. Maybe you mean suburbs?

Unlimited data.

Consistent telephone connectivity.

Game. Set. Match.

Yup!

i have att and i can say it is not as reliable in coverage as Verizon. but where i do get coverage it is supper fast. one thing is att has a strain on the network hopefully the Verizon iphone will let that up a bit and allow for face time over 3g. and Verizon has 4g now right? so if in the event the new iphone for Verizon is 4g (most unlikely if they are announcing it tomorrow) but if it is i would give the fight to Verizon.

I think AT&T's data plans garbage.

$15 for 200MB?????

They should have a $10/200MB, $15/1GB, $25/2GB, $30/Unlimited or something similar.

I wouldn't complain about those costs that much. Here in Canada it's abou $25 for 500mb, $30 for 1gb and so on. And currently no carriers offer an unlimited plan and there's no exploit (ie original iPhone) to get it

I think it's important to add the words '"where you are" to that quote.

Look, I am NOT an apologist for AT&T. Nor am I a fan of Verizon. They BOTH seek to extract as much money from the consumer and provide as little in the way of service and features as they can get away with.

But I will repeat what I've said before- my girlfriend has Verizon. There are plenty of times when I will get a call on my iPhone using AT&T where the caller will say that they tried to reach her on her cell using Verizon where her phone didn't ring. What this points out is the fickle nature of cell phone usage and the fact that where you are has a lot to do with which company you prefer.

Hopefully, the competition will bring out the best in both companies and the consumer will ultimately be better off for it.

couldnt have said it any better.

No, I mean rural areas. Like I have friends in Central Cali (which has had 3G for years) and in rural Nevada (which just got 3G as part of the Alltel buyout). Both see VERY fast speeds. We're getting 3G here in Montana as part of the Alltel buyout next month...

The rural areas where my family lives are on Edge.

Exactly. Where your family lives. Have you looked at AT&T's new future coverage map? It shows planned 3G coverage for 1Q 2011. Go to http://www.att.com/network/? and click "Coverage" at the bottom. The light blue is planned NEAR future (next few weeks) 3G coverage. I'm in part of that area :) I can't wait. Next month - oh year! I just hope I get my new phone before I go to Vegas! I doubt it though... :( My Alltel BlackBerry Tour is getting replaced for free NO CONTRACT (and no change to my plan) with a Samsung Captivate (I had my choice of free smartphones - BlackBerry Torch, BlackBerry Curve, Samsung Captivate, Samsung Focus, HTC Aria, HTC Surround, LG Quantum, and Palm Pre Plus)

I think this will be good for competition. While yes, AT&T's 3G network is faster, Verizon has more coverage at least in my state.

I have a mifi for work and ran a test comparing speed on my iPhone 3Gs using AT&T's 3G to Verizon's 3G via a mifi. The speed test I ran showed AT&T at an average speed down of 1685 Mbits/s and Verizon 474 Mbis/s. Now this may be a skewed test because I have a better AT&T signal in my house than I do Verizon.

I am considering moving to Verizon for my personal phones but I am going to wait another year until my AT&T contract is up (bought my wife a iPhone 4) plus by then, Verizon should have their 4G network rolled out in my metropolitan area. If the 4G has the speeds that my Verizon business rep are touting in other metropolitan areas and you can get unlimited data, it may be a "no-brainer."

My only issue is doesn't CDMA have the issue where you can't talk and use data at the same time. I think that was a major advantage of GSM. Now I'm not sure if they have made it so CDMA can do both at the same time so can anyone give me some info on that?

Well said!

Verizon currently cripples all smartphones by not allowing voice and data at the same time.

Got some info here on that:

Would Verizon cripple iPhone?
http://obamapacman.com/2011/01/will-verizon-cdma-cripple-apple-iphone/

Yes!!!!!!!!!

I cannot wait to hear all you At&t fanboys whenever Verizon does not cripple under Apple iPhone users. So excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm happy to hear about the Verizon announcement. Are there service provider fanboys?

Well again I'm just waiting to hear if they have made it so you can use data and voice at the same time. I had issues before where when I was using data on a CDMA phone I would have calls go straight to voice mail. Something I really want to be fixed before I ever think of changing.

And I can't wait until people complain that they paid 300 bucks to get out of their AT&T contract only to find out that Verizon drops calls and has slow data too....just like every single wireless carrier. None of them are perfect.
