11:25AM Question from Ars Technica: what happens when you're on a call and need to use data?

Dan: Same as a CDMA device.

So... you don't.

:( Well no Verizon for me

Also what if I'm using the mobile hotspot? I guess no phone calls?

All I can say is too bad I'm stuck on AT&T's ****** network for another year :(

Can't even surf the net in Manhattan, although they have gotten a lot better with the whole dropping calls thing here.

I'm happy to hear about the Verizon announcement. Are there service provider fanboys?

Unfortunately yes. I'm glad we finally have a choice in the US.

Well again I'm just waiting to hear if they have made it so you can use data and voice at the same time. I had issues before where when I was using data on a CDMA phone I would have calls go straight to voice mail. Something I really want to be fixed before I ever think of changing.

You must have had other issues...(or it's not CDMA you're recalling). CDMA prioritizes voice over data. If you get a call while using data, the data stream is paused and the call comes through. Not once did I experience a call going to VM.

Not sure, but someone on this forum mentioned that somehow their mobile hotspot on their BB worked through voice calls??? They just couldn't browse the web themselves.

Doesn't make sense to me. It would have to have 2 radios to do that.

Yes I know voice is given the priority but I'm telling you for years that wouldn't always happen. I would get voice mail notifications while surfing the web.

CDMA networks seem more likely to have calls go straight to voicemail than GSM and especially UMTS networks. I believe that this is due to the ANSI switching.

The switching (back end of the network) for CDMA is ancient, the exact same tech used for AMPS (analog).

Qualcomm DID market CDMA with GSM MAP core switching (they called it GSM 1X), but no carrier took them up on it. It lost two of the main advantages of CDMA - analog compatibility and lack of removable security (SIM card). Removable security is a benefit for customers, and required by law in many countries, but carriers hate it. Qualcomm even offered removable security on CDMA with ANSI switching in the form of a CSIM card (SIM compatible), but again, no one took them up on it except in China (CSIM is used on CDMA in China to meet removable security mandates)

Personally I have never had problems with ATT. I had Verizon briefly and had loads of issues with their coverage and thus went with ATT. Been over 4 years and no problems. The only leg up I see with Verizon is they are going to offer an unlimited data plan. But really all I see here is people who have ATT will stay and people with Verizon who want an ihone will buy one. By the way I had the worst costumer serves ever with Verizon. And they swore up and down it would work where I lived, which was not the case. Then it took a month or so to get my money back. ATT on the other hand was the only one that did have coverage where I lived and I get full bars. And I even find when I travel I have yet to not be covered. And as to the augment to dropped call I hardly ever get any. I have had like maybe 4 or 5 in the last couple of years. But that's not more or less than any of my friends who are on any other network. So I guess every one has there thing. And as for now I have no reason to leave ATT and I love my iphone. I just wish it had stayed an ATT exclusive..... But oh well I guess it was bound to happen one day.

Why? It benefits us who stay with AT&T as well. It gives AT&T competition and reason to try to be competitive.

For example, it would be very easy for Verizon to offer a much better package with hotspot capability that if they do it right, could tempt AT&T customers, even those happy with AT&T, to leave. That could encourage AT&T to get more reasonable about their tethering fee which is ridiculous (either give you some GBs for the fee or let you tether for free or something). And if verizon offers "unlimited", AT&T might be pressured to bring that back to appeal to new customers (or even to keep newish ones that couldn't get grandfathered from leaving when their contract is up).

I'll be watching closely. I may not pick up the first Verizon iPhone if it's 3G only. I may hold on to my iPhone 4 and wait for an LTE model. But of course, my current iPhone isn't getting any faster speeds than Verizon.....but I won't move until I have some advantage. AT&T finally got their voice service decent in Dallas.

In my case that answer would be yes. It's going to very for each user based on AT&T and Verizon's speed in their area.

I agree and I'm have similar circumstances. ATT has actually improved and works very well for me now. When I travel, that is sometimes an issue, so I'll be picking up iPhone5 on verizon

Lets let users decide, not ATT and Verizon, we'll see in the next months what people have to say.

The fact I can upgrade to the new iPhone on AT&T makes me want to stay. Verizon has killed the early upgrade and I'm not about to pay full retail price every new iPhone. Actually I'll be paying for two since I need to get one for the wife.

No Verizon logo. Check.

No GPS lockouts to force you to use VZ Navigator. Check.

VZ Navigator and Vcast aren't even loaded on the phone at delivery. Double Check.

My most frequently used app? Mark the Spot. (not quite true but close) There is a technical problem with Mark The Spot. I launch it when I'm having a problem so it gets the correct location. Then the app stupidly tries to send immediately, from the problem area and keeps trying until I get to a good coverage area. Finally I get a text message thanking me for my report. Those text messages sometimes arrive 45 minutes later meaning it was close to 45 minutes for Mark The Spot to find enough of a signal to submit my report. And I'm never quite sure if it's using the GPS where I had the problem or if it's using the GPS when it finally finds a clear enough signal to submit the report.

Now I turn my attention to deciding how many months (times 10 bucks off my $325 ETF) I want to wait before going back to Verizon. I know I can sell my iPhone 4 to make some of that up, but does the availability of a Verizon iPhone affect At&t iPhone 4 resale prices? I think it does.

I have no idea if AT&T claims are "technically" true, but even if GSM is theoretically faster than CDMA, aren't most complaints about AT&T's network speed? Verizon's "slower" network may well be faster in the real world, no?

Correct me if I am wrong, but 99% of what I have seen is Lack of service, or dropped calls is what everyone is firing away at AT&T for , not their network speed???

I think AT&T's data plans garbage.

$15 for 200MB?????

They should have a $10/200MB, $15/1GB, $25/2GB, $30/Unlimited or something similar.

Verizon has almost the same

$15 for 150 MB
$30 for Unlimited Email Web Only
$45 for Unlimited Web Email for Corporate Networks

Outside of the Unlimited Plan Verizon is offering, there is no difference and I think once Verizon gets a load of how much bandwidth is getting sucked up one of three things will likely happen:

AT&T will offer the same plans as Verizon?

Verizon will offer plans similar to AT&T now?

Verizon will stick to what it has, and AT&T will stay with what it offers (however this is unlikely, although no one has followed T-Mobile or Sprint with $99 for unlimited everything

Seriously? Verizon's unlimited is for email only?

If this is truly what they offer, I'd be going with AT&T if I wasn't with either cause at least I can get 2 GB of not just email (cause email is not what I use the most at all). And they offer a better 15$ plan.

Some one want to verify this cause I have a hard time believing Verizon doesn't have a bigger plan for all data than 150 MB? I fail to see how they would compete with that offering (at least in markets there is decent service from other providers) if those are the only plans they offer. Even if there wasn't decent service with other providers I'd predict people would try the others first, and those with the money or frustrated enough might leave to go to Verizon afterwards (but they would lose some potential customers cause they'd be locked in and not worth it to them to break contract). But I know if I didn't know who had best coverage and I saw those plans vs. AT&T's, T-Mobile's, Sprint's, I'd be chased away.

No, e-mail and web.

Ah, I was wondering how they would compete with just email only.

But when you say email and web, do you mean web as in any program that needs to connect to the web or just web browsers? I'm guessing the former cause it still wouldn't be that competitive to only allow web browsers and email programs.

It's everything. The other plan above it is just trying to gouge business customers for more money. AT&T has the same setup.

No 3G while using voice.
Slower 3G.
May not be getting iPhone 5 this summer.

Yeah, no thanks.

i'm sticking with AT&T and upgrading every summer. It's been working well for me for three years.

The thing is, when people start to complain about something, more people follow in suit, and complaining starts being trendy. Now everyone is under the assumption that Verizon is totally problem-free, which is so not the case. But, I'm fine with it. People can jump ship and free up my network :)
