Do you really believe what you are saying?

Yes - I believe what I'm saying because it's true.

Especially with gaming, the Apple TV is about to enter a new realm of far more frequent updates as it now has an App store that will greatly benefit from new specs that keep getting bumped for iOS devices.

I don't see it being yearly, yet anyway. I think this'll possibly last out maybe two years to get people into it before they hit the more frequently updated hardware. Although I'd like to be wrong, I'm all for a more powerful one next year :D

The ATV4 and Plex combo is fantastic! Finally all my digital content is at my fingertips. It's a tremendous improvement over my previous ATV3s (which are still in service by the way). Yes the ATV4 might have some omissions for now but if my experience with iPhones and iOS is any indication, the ATV4 will improve significantly over time. Get one now and enjoy it now!

Filed - We'll touch base a year from now and see what happened. :)

I am glad that I have finally found the truth! Was beginning to think it just didn't exist!

I for one will appreciate ongoing updates although I don't think they will be on the same schedule as are the iPhones. My main concern is that tvOS continue to improve and mature. As for gaming being the driving force behind constant updates? Not so sure that will be the case. A more likely force will the continued effort to finally release a box that is free of any restrictions of the cable companies. The ATV4 is a step in the right direction.

What has the ATV4 box done that gets us any closer to being "free of the cable companies"?

The ATV3 "apps" as installed by Apple could have done that - The content deals are the problems, not the lack of a box to run a TV app.

That's going to be a fun debate ;)

The really fun part is I think the chances of a refreshed ATV next year go way UP if Apple does ever get a sweet content deal lined up. I could also see a tweaked Siri Remote to address a few issues and perhaps change out one of the buttons (or add one) for direct Apple TV Service access w/ one touch, etc

Content packages could be a potential force, I think they'd be more than capable of using a content package on the current hardware. As to if they would, well... It's a feature to push new hardware isn't it.

Totally agree - It likely "will run" on ATV4, but "will run best" on ATV5 and perhaps tie in another (artificial) feature that's exclusive to ATV5 (again, likely artificially done just to drive sales). There would likely also be a tangible upgrade like a more storage & perhaps remote tweaks, etc.

Remember guys - Bean counter is in charge these days and these trends are easy to spot all across the product lines right now.

I think it's a great device.

There are a lot of folks out there who are just going to complain.

Always going to happen, mores the pity. How nice thew world would be if there were no whingers, or for that matter and far more importantly, cause for whinging ;)

I don't know what people were expecting. It's not like it's a monumental leap from the past ATVs; it has one killer new feature (Apps) and the rest is an update of the usual interface. It is a new OS and it's much faster and responsive than previous models, and the new remote is great. The app store is THE reason to get this. The selection is thin now but just wait until more robust apps come along; for now I'm very happy to have Plex without jailbreaking the ATV, and it has the potential to be a killer media center device.

If Apple ever gets it's subscription TV service off the ground then the ATV4 will sudden become your new cable box, and it'll be huge.

The single most compelling reason, no question at all.

Yes. "If" - & even then it's going to depend on what content you can get (sports will continue to be a hang up for a while I think - Too tied up with existing infrastructure of contracts/distribution, etc)

The ATV4 tvOS does a much better job of consolidating all my media sources including Apple Music, iTunes, HBO Now, Plex, Netflix, Hulu and several sports apps. I own a decent sized library of media (mainly dvd and blu ray) that I have digitized and now live in a Plex environment. My modest Mac mini serves up Plex content directly to the new ATV4 Plex client something that unfortunately the ATV3 never could or would do. I also own a PS4 and even a Sony blu ray player that play their own small niche in my home theater setup including Vudu via the Sony blu ray player. For other sources like Amazon video I have the fall back to Airplay on iPads and iPhones something that I continue to use even on my existing ATV3. For local content TV content I use OTA digital transmissions. With the setup I have I've been able to cut the cord and said goodbye to the likes of DirecTV and Cox cable. And still come out way ahead money-wise. In short, at least for me, the ATV4 is a step in the right direction in terms of consolidating content going forward. Could it be better? Of course it could. Will it get better? I have the confidence that Apple views the ATV4 as a full partner and will deliver an improved ecosystem in the near future. In the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying the new ATV4!

HBO Now, Plex, Netflix, Hulu and several sports apps.

Those particular examples are all doable already in numerous other ways.

By the way, I also use Plex, but lets not kid ourselves on where that content is coming from...

...slightly different discussion than "being free of the cable companies"

Oh no kidding here...I often wonder if I should just sell (or maybe even donate ;)) my collection of dvd and blu ray discs that take way too much physical space. Going forward there will come a day when everything will be streamed whether it be iTunes, Netflix, HBO, etc.

I think you are missing my point. My goal is to consolidate as best as possible all the different content sources that most of us are constant juggling with. Yes they "all doable already in numerous other ways" but the ATV4 is helping cut down on those "numerous other ways". The ATV4 is a step in the right direction for those looking to unify their content or those looking to cut the cord to the cable companies. Sooner or later even the cable companies will get with the program.

I wouldn't let that derail you. Most of the current gripes people have, can be solved by software updates – and I'm sure they will be.

My own main con after using both, was that I found I missed the old, slick, dark interface. I've been an Apple fan since before the iMac, and this is actually the first time ever I think I've preferred a prior UI design to a new one. My secondary one is the missing optical audio port (for AirPlaying audio with the TV off), but not everyone's going to care about that.

But all that aside, there's tons of great new stuff to enjoy, and most of it's still in the future. (By all means, though – wait a few months for more verdicts, updates and a sale, and you won't miss much.)

I didn't go in having huge expectations, especially when the ATV4 was only released a few weeks ago. It does everything Apple advertised it would. While Siri is severly limited (I don't use her much anyway), I happily have had no issues watching/streaming Netflix, Hulu, HBOGO, etc.

I think it's a modest upgrade from the ATV3, which is connected to our bedroom TV. The UI refresh is nice, but I don't think the ATV4 is anything earth shattering. I do admit liking that it has Apple Music though. It has a lot of potential, especially once more developers build more apps for the ATV.

I don't think everyone needs to go out and spend $149/$199 for this. However, if you're patient, over time this could turn out to a game changing device.

There have been years between ATV hardware updates. In the case of the 4 it looks to me as if they intend this to be "the" Apple TV for at least the next two years. To that extent it's all about software, and when it comes to system, manufacturer and third party software the possibilities are endless.

Had mine for several days now and love it. Like the Apple Watch at release, not everything is perfect. But a few patches later and it will be even better. I personally have little doubt that some of the missing items like Bluetooth keyboard support and remote app support are coming. Why wouldn't they be? In the meantime, this box is FAR more slick and responsive than the prior gen. Apps are great. The family is really enjoying the games. And Siri is handy albeit limited.

Actual anecdotes from those present at Apple demonstrations at launch that talked with Apple directly. Word is no on the remote App. BT keyboard we don't know but it's hard to believe the omission was anything but purposeful.

For me the atv4 is the device I've been waiting for. I used to have a wdtv live media player for watching my to shows and movies stored on my nas and a atv3 for Netflix and AirPlay stuff. Now with the atv4 it replaces both devices by running plex media server on my nas, plex on the atv4 for movies and tv and Netflix and AirPlay so it's heaps more convenient right out of the box. While it would be nice to be able to use a iPhone or iPad as a keyboard for me it's not that important since so far I've only needed to type in my App Store details and Netflix details and that's it.

After having it all setup since launch day I have been very happy with it and I'll be getting a 2nd one to replace the wdtv live and atv3 I also have in the lounge room. The only thing that was a little annoying was no optical out so I'm about to buy a hdmi to optical splitter thing.
