so you bought a device with out looking into the back ground of its history, neither done any research on the current model?

Now you've bought an ATV 4 and find it rubbish? So because you can't do the above that means its rubbish. Yes there are flaws with this modal but as stated over many threads and posts it will get better in time (new apps, new software updates) You really need to play around with it more and learn about it rather then just saying youTube wont let me search, its crap...

Maybe the problem is the YouTube App? Google is not famous for its prowess at UI design.

That makes perfect sense.

What's missing from the ATV4, and will surely come shortly, is type-by-voice which worked very well with the Remote app and is easy to implement with the new Siri remote.

ATV4 is about Dictation, not Keyboards.

BJ

It would not be a lot of work to support a keyboard in the interim it takes to get Siri working reliably ...

Just spent the last 30 minutes trying to figure out how to search for videos on the youtube app and gave up. I bought the Apple Tv 4 today, never owned an Apple Tv but figured it'd be a fun toy. So far it just feels like a waste of money. Granted it was only $150, but still. Can someone explain the purpose of this device? What a waste.

For me, the purpose of the ATV 4 is it is a cord cutting device. Just a few more local news apps and bye bye cable / satellite and their archaic and punitive business model.

That's true, but its still like everything else on ATV you have to move the cursor using the track pad to select what you want.

Until apple allow the remote iPhone app and/or the keyboard to connect it will be like this for all apps.

Guys - Please stop with the excuses on this one.

The old units easily connected with bluetooth keyboards.
The ATV4 uses bluetooth for the Siri Remote.

There's simply no excuse for essentially removing functionality that was highly useful and totally unobtrusive if you didn't want to use it.

Please no "they'll get to it" - Get to it? Why was it removed? It is not a new science to pair up a BT keyboard, and tvOS is extremely close to iOS which has BT keyboard support throughout.

Also, dictation (where is that by the way?) won't solve all the uses of keyboards, like passwords and fine grained control in apps like YouTube. When I search on YouTube, the search frequently is more elaborate than a couple shorts words and Siri will never get what I want as correct as simply typing it in real quick.

The excuse machine for Apple is simply off the charts on this one. They f'd this particular part up.

The purpose? It plays movies, tv shows, music, shows your photos, runs apps and games, can provide basic information such as the weather, sports results. That's more or less it's basic functionality covered, it'll improve over time.

As for YouTube, start the YouTube app on the Apple TV, swipe up on the touchpad of the Siri remote and slide along to the left of the menu, to the Search section.
Then swipe down to get to the keyboard and swipe left and right to highlight letters, when you highlight a letter you want to input, click on the touchpad.
With each letter you enter a list of related videos will appear and change to more relevant results with the more you type. Then just slide down on the touchpad to highlight the video you want to watch and click on it.

Dang TrueBlou, how did you figure that out? Must be some sort of Apple genius.

Well, ask a silly question, get a silly answer.

To state that a device is a waste of money because it can't do something it quite clearly can, need I say more.

that doesn't work well if the word is long and not a commonly used word. :(
but I guess it's better than nothing. Until Bluetooth keyboard pairing
is added to the ATV4.

If this happens to a new iPad, I'm sure it will be front page news.... :(
Can you imagine Apple taking away Bluetooth keyboard pairing
capability on a future iPad? Come to thin of it, does the brand new
iPad Pro have this "problem"??? :D

What I do is simply search on my iPhone or Mac, and when I find something I add it to my "Watch Later" list and boom! it shows up on my Apple TV Youtube. :)

I hope they add an iPhone App to type text in. The Roku have that and it's super convenient.

Great workaround which I never thought of! Doh! I hope they allow remote access via iPhone keyboard or bluetooth keyboard but it's not a killer for me. Enjoying the whole new ATV 4 experience.

Thanks again.

Shawn

There's every possibility that Bluetooth keyboards might never return to the Apple TV. Roku has never had that ability either and it manages with the app having a keyboard.

Apple could be going for the same sort of thing. It would be nice if they'd had some sort of solution available at launch, but for whatever reason they don't. No point complaining about it, it changes nothing.

Personally, as much as I'd like a keyboard of some kind, I'm not going to let the lack of one ruin my enjoyment of the many good things the Apple TV can do.

I see your point and agree that they should have keyboard support, just poking a little fun. I do think, however, that searching for a youtube video isn't as complicated as you make it out to be.

I agree, and as a wireless Apple keyboard owner would embrace it wholeheartedly, I'm just offering an opinion as to why it won't happen.

I am still in shock that Apple released a new ATV whose most dedicated users are early adopter hardcore types, we're all using our voice in the Remote app, and now we have a Siri remote that doesn't do voice-to-text. That makes no sense.

This guy watermelon is all over this Apple TV forum complaining about something with multiple threads

Can anyone confirm whether one can just say their search values into the Siri remote? Are there other apps that take text entry that the Siri remote works for?

There's only a limited amount of things Siri works with at the moment, basically this sort of thing (list follows) and no, unfortunately there's only a handful of apps Siri will work with just now. However for the patient, Apple is opening up Siri for all apps early next year.

  • "Open App Store”
  • “Launch Netflix”
  • “Go to Photos”
While playing video

When you’re playing video content, there are a number of commands you can use to control playback.

Ask Siri. Say something like:

  • “Pause this”
  • “Play from the beginning”
  • “Skip forward 90 seconds”
  • “Jump back 10 minutes”
  • “Turn on closed captioning”
  • “Turn on French subtitles”
  • “What did she just say?”

In this case, Apple TV skips back 15 seconds and temporarily turns on subtitles.
Get more information about a show

You can ask questions to get more information about a programme you’re watching.

Ask Siri. Say something like:

  • “Who stars in this?”
  • “Who directed this?”
  • “What’s this rated?”
  • “When was this released?”
Get information

You can ask Siri about other topics, like sport, weather and stocks.

Ask Siri. Say something like:

  • “Who won the FA Cup?”
  • “Who are Tottenham playing tomorrow?”
  • “Who plays in goal for Milan?”
  • “How’s the weather?”
  • “What’s the weather in York?”
  • “When is sunset in Paris?”
  • “Where’s the NASDAQ today?”
  • “How’s Apple’s share price?”

no, it's not that complicated in 90% of the situation. :)

It's the internet.... created for people who
Must really hate the new Apple TV then eh

yeah.. I really hate it.. which is why I just placed an order
on Best Buy for my 2nd and 3rd ATV4 32gb. :( Once
all three ATV4s are in place, expect a torrent of complaint
threads from me. (JUST KIDDING!) :D :D :D

I also just placed all 4 of my existing ATV3 on eBay. :)

No, and what's worse is that not only did we go backwards on lack of speech-to-text but as an added bonus, the new keyboard layout is one horizontal row which takes forever to type anything as you have to to all the way left and all the way right too often.

For a company like Apple to introduce a remote with a microphone and then prohibit it from working in search boxes and then to make the keyboard as un-friendly as it is, wow, just wow. The new ATV is a terrific machine, but boy oh boy does this functionality become the killjoy.

Now that I'm used to the new keyboard layout I don't mind it so much. You can get all the way from one side to the other in one swipe and with using the shortcut for the backspace key you don't even have to do that so much.

How do you do this shortcut? Haven't figured it out.

I have more concern over the typing accuracy of individual letters than I do in going all the way left or right.

The old on-screen keyboard was no joy but at least it was a) triple-stacked and b) had a click-click-click remote that made it somewhat easy to nail a letter in a word. The new on-screen keyboard is a single line and the remote doesn't 'click', it slides around. It's not easy, lots of misses.
