I did that - but in the end the solution was switching the language on the watch and the iphone ... from german to english.
As in the old mac os days -- internationalisation introduces some not easy to find errors.
Without your hints I would'nt switch the languages - thank you.

Sheesh. I've been unable to get the Audible app to work from Day One, and I assumed that it was the WatchOS 5.1 beta. It never occurred to me that running my Watch and iPhone in French was the problem. (I cleverly uncovered a similar bug in the Vanguard investment app within the last year. They actually got on the phone with me to figure it out because they couldn't reproduce the crashing bug.)

I guess I'll switch the Watch first to see if that fixes it.

Edited: After experimentation yesterday and this morning, it appears that the important variable is the language of the phone at the time of the transfer to the Watch.

The Watch can stay in French. The phone needs to be in English when the file is transferred to the Watch. I am able to switch the phone to French and have the Watch app still work, but if I transfer a book to the Watch with the phone in French, the Watch app crashes.

So the work-around is temporarily changing the phone to English, transferring a book to the Watch, and changing the phone back to the desired language. The Watch can remain in the desired language.
