beto2k7 you give out so much information!
Even your Firewall settings are "Allow all incoming connections".
(suggest that you enable firewall).

Also re. showing temperature rises, try Temperature Monitor's history display (under Window menu, called "Show History Windows").

You say (in your vid) that you don't know what would happen if the system was under load as well as playing audio. The answer is far higher temperatures. At least in to the 80C range, maybe higher.

Meanwhile the machine running just full load stress test (ie. no audio or firewire) keeps its temperatures within sensible bounds.

I really don't care about firewall settings as I'm behinD 3 cascading hadward firewalls here at the office. Plus I trust that no one here is gonna try to screw me over since we all are in the same boat here. Anyway I'll re encode a shorter version without that much info just for peace of mind. And I do know what would happen with the temps on full load I was just bringing it to context for the manager who is taking care of my case. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi,

I want to conduct the test on my Mac Pro, but just to be sure: is it the processor core diode I should be monitoring?.. (And not the heat sink temperature that iStat is showing.)

Also: what temperature levels are dangereous for the processor?..

Thanks.

Monitor: CPU A Temperature Diode (the rearmost one) in Temperature Monitor. iStat Menus temperatures are inappropriate, just use it to get electric power data (though Hardware Monitor also shows that).

The Intel specs show ~70C as the ceiling.
(note to self: hunt down those Intel pdfs again and post on Facebook site)

This is on a brand new, out of box machine with nothing extra installed except the newest Software Updates and Handbrake.

MAC PRO/3.33QCX/4X2GB.HD4870/640/SD/BT

Handbrake encode of H.264 file

NO MUSIC: 18m34s
MP3 LOOPING IN ITUNES: 18m38s

Nothing is plugged in via firewire. I'm seeing no performance hit here.

Running 10.6.2 build 10C2234.

Performances is not affected as your cpus sit at 1% load.... measure your temps with Hardware monitor.

About this Mac shows 10.6.2 build 10C540 on my machine so maybe the kernel extensions have been updated in 10C2234?

I really don't give a damn about the temperatures, because who's to say that's even accurately being measured to begin with?

I thought one of the big problems here was a 25% performance hit playing audio on the quads, and 12.5% on the octos?

With this brand new, out of box quad 3.33, I see no performance hit while playing audio while cranking the cores to the max in Handbrake.

Higher temperatures mean more energy consumption and can reduce the lifespan of your computer over time.

I can E-Mail the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient.kext to whoever wants it. I just happen to be at work now and everything is locked down (ftp, port 2082 to access my website file upload manager, etc.)

They're both listed as version 96.0.0 on this build.

I sent you a PM with my email address.. My Mac Pro (10.6.2 Build 10C540) reports te same version number tho...

is there no MP 09 users that have developer account @ apple? = 10.6.3 beta...

or, any mac user for that matter. just so we can check out the drivers.

I'm really wondering how long my Pro will last with the current fan management.

The system runs on 1600% CPU usage for about 2 hours now, but the fan speeds haven't changed at all. Boost Fans are still on 1100RPM.
This is on a 2.26GHz machine, I really don't wanna see a 2.93 or 3.33GHz machine doing this task.
These temps are pathetic and WAY out of Intels maximum operating temperatures.

Strangely enough, playing audio does NOT increase the values any more.

Transporteur if you want my beta fix, here it is

you will lose ability to automatically downclock cpu (speedstep) = few more C in idle temp, still better then almost killing the cpu like you are now.

These temperatures are based on two encoding tasks, not on the audio issue.
What I tried to say is that the current Pro does not only need a fix for the Audio issue, it also needs a completely new fan management.
90° core temps and the fans make no attempt to spin faster? Apple really can't be serious with that.

But hey, AppleCare is with me.

Performance has definitely been affected in my testing.

Goodcow--could you try this again with other benchmarks like geekbench? Also, if you didn't do this the first time, please be sure to try at least 2 runs of each test case. Usually the first run will be slowest because data gets loaded from disk instead of memory.

Thanks!

Does it effect anything else apart from speedstep?

You can disable speedstep on alot of pc motherboards so i doubt it matters a great deal.

Hey, this is Chris from Ars Technica. I'd like to cover this issue, but it would be great if someone could contact me. My AIM is in my profile, and email is chris dot foresman at arstechnica dot com. BTW, I leave Adium idling all night, so if I don't respond, just let me know when is the best time to contact you.

Particularly I'd like to hear from at least one user having the problems, as well as Cindori about his proposed fix.

Thanks.

Cindori, I installed your Patch on my Mac Pro (see signature).
My Mac Pro doesn't restart anymore ! What can I do ? Everytime the apple logo appears I got a kernel panic error. All external devices unplugged.

oh boy.. I installed it on mine.. my idle temps after reboot are 44 instead of 37 adn CPA diode starts at 47 and doesn't move after a few minutes of audio.

Clearly haven't read the whole thread!!!!

goodcow

Mind running Geekbench? As your findings are totally contradictory to every Mac Pro 2009 i've tested! And its a few now!
