Woo!
After updating, i played some MP3s for about 15 minutes. My CPU temp actually *dropped* from 31° to 30° :).

Decoding flash is still pushing be above 45°, but I'm sure Apple will blame that on Adobe...:p

I just backed up my mac pro via FireWire to my external hard drive and my temps went from 31 to 43 the fix only fixes the audio bug and not the FireWire bug FFS

10c temperature increase sounds perfectly normal..?

with the bug you were getting ~30 no?

So, does anyone know what the problem was - software

fix included a new audio driver and a new IO driver

FYI:
The info on the patch says an extension called AudioAUUC version 1.0 is installed. The date listed in system profiler for AudioAUUC version 1.0 is 11/3/09 2:24 PM. It looks like Apple was working on this for a lot longer than this thread would suggest. Unless Apple's programmers are backdating their extensions...

...and yes it seems to fix the problem.

P.S. First post, long time lurker...

i checked this out, yes driver says it was made then but so it did with old one too.
that creation date is probablystill from the 10.6.2 update, since it is a week before the 10.6.2 update was released.
not backdating, just not updating

It *is* fixed. I did a backup and CPU temps went up 1C...

Compared to 20C before the patch...

Base temps - For yg17

So what temperature should a Mac Pro (quad) be idling at? Mine idles in the upper 30s or lower 40s, is that normal? Mine would spike up to around 74 when playing music before which is higher than most (I think a lot of people spiked up to around 65). The fix works great, but I'm just wondering if my temps are still a bit higher than normal.

Nope. Those are perfectly normal. Cool as a cucumber!

FW bug still there? Hold the phone!

I just backed up my mac pro via FireWire to my external hard drive and my temps went from 31 to 43 the fix only fixes the audio bug and not the FireWire bug FFS

Let's talk about this some more. I'm only seeing a 4-5 watt increase per CPU when transferring files to a FW drive (I've done several large 40 gig transfers) with a 1-2 deg C temp increase.

We need to rule out the firewire issue, as it may represent a serious problem that has yet to be addressed. Can some other users please weigh in?

Temperature Readings before and after applying Audio Update

Here are my readings before and after applying the Audio update....

Hope it will help to some :)

FW issue

What would be the best test for that, if it matters, copying to or from a FW drive? Does with or without an adapter make a difference? I have one Raided FW800 made with two of the original Caviars, the 640GBs, in an OWC case. Other FW storage I have needs an adapter.

Have USB concerns ever been reported? I would think the effect with those might be similar. It's my understanding that both have had long time problems on a Mac.

Anyone know of any performance testing going on like was done when we were first documenting this? Any before and after Handbrake users out there who before this update saw a drop in performance when listening to audio?

Yeah... firewire bug still there...so sad. Anyway, I am still wondering what to do when my ESI Maya44e card arrives... :p

I can't reproduce any "FW bug" on our MP.
I had transfer about 60 Gbs with a temperature rise of no more than 5°C ...

Prior to installing the patch, my wife's MP 2009 system was sitting @ 61C. < sigh >

Nothing was playing. As is her habit, she had TONS of Word documents open, iTunes open but not playing, FireFox, Safari, and some others.

After the patch, I played about 30 mins of music through iTunes. Temps went from ~33C to 37C or 39C. At idle, with most of the same stuff loaded, but iTunes not playing anything, her system is sitting @ 36C.

In my book, this fixes the issue for her. 61C @ idle with no music playing is for the birds.

Thanks everyone.

Yes.

And I'd like to know if anyone has tested USB for problems since the fix. Statements such as "Audio is fixed" is too vague, as it doesn't indicate if it's using the on-board audio chip, USB or FW audio devices. I'm just hoping for some clarification.
