Looks like then upped their game finally and with a lower price.
"Finally" is the operative word here. I wonder if they're still going to claim that TRIM isn't needed.

And 7% over-provisioning is the bare minimum (and the default for most drives). OWC really needs to let their engineering staff review their marketing messages to avoid looking stupid at times.

My thoughts about the Aura PRO X 1TB SSD

I want to purchase this drive but I want to get information about what speeds, compatibilite and reliability to expect on a Macbook Pro MID 2014 (model 11,3)

I have now written four times to both sales and support with the following question:

Hi,

I am considering buying the Aura PRO X for my Macbook Pro Mid 2014 15" 2,5Ghz 512SSD 16GB Ram (Model 11,3)

If I do a speed test with Black Magic i get 720 MB/S reads and 650 MB/S on writes.

Can I expect this to be approx doubled in speed with the Aura PRO X?

Is it as reliable as the original Samsung 512 SSD?

But the only answer I received was the following:

Hi,
if you want can run the black magic Test on this ssd.
Attention, this new ssd works only with 10.13 or higher.

This makes me nervous indeed - that they cannot answer my questions in a proper way...

I am running High Sierra of course..

So can I just press CMD-R and install my TimeMachine backup on the drive if I buy it....

Anybody?

Any new information?

OWC's sales pitch said "up to 1600MB/s" but currently their tech specs page shows "Up to" "Read: 1352MB/s" and "Write: 1066MB/s" which is slower than what I get with my Apple SSUBX SSD using BlackMagic.

The Problem is that they only give „Up To-Specs“ instead of specific specs for each model the Aura Pro X supports.

An alternative would be the Transcend 820 but there are no real life reviews, only the specs on their website...

I really needed the extra space so I purchased a 1 TB Aura Pro X. It installed just fine and I was able to clone my old SSD to it using Carbon Copy Cloner without any trouble, but it runs slower and hotter. I was getting over 1700 MB/sec with the Apple SSD, but the Aura Pro X is only giving about 1000 MB/sec, even though the specs say up to 1300 MB/sec. It also runs hot. The deck of my MBP is much warmer than before. Sadly, I'll be pulling the Aura Pro X out and returning it to OWC.

yeah the speed specs they advertise are nonsense.
I picked up an Aura Pro X 480 for my 11,4 rMBP. I tested the stock disk when it was still installed, and the new one after I'd copied the contents over.

OEM 413 1835
OWC 390 1366

That is about the same for writes and about 2/3rds of the read speed!
You would think that a brand new drive, which is twice as large as the old one, would at least benefit from being newer. This is a 2015 Macbook Pro!

I think for my Mac Pro I will be looking in to these adapters that allow you to use standard NVMe.
Certainly will not be wasting more money with OWC.

I've been thinking about adapters and non-Apple SSDs too, but the specs I see from them still don't match the speed I'm getting from my Apple proprietary SSD. Have you seen something else?

Ty, stopped me from ordering one.

How nice to read about the Aura X SSD which should work right out of the box on a 2015 15" MBP, however out of 10 customer reviews, 8 of them are negative. Overheats, slow speeds, random reboots, kernel panics. How is this even acceptable? Then you go to the Samsung 960/970 + Sintech adapter followers and again, similar issues, although not as bad as with the Aura X. Some slight overheating and quicker battery drain than with Apple's stock SSD. I don't know anymore, it's all pretty discouraging. Perhaps the best thing will be to just keep the internal 256GB and go with an external SSD like a Samsung T3/T5, etc.

Yep, I've basically given up and I'm just keeping the Apple 512 GB hard drive that came with my MBP. I carry an external drive, which is a nuisance.

Hello there
I installed the 1tb Aura pro X in my early 2015 macbook pro (512 gb SSD); my computer was still running Yosemite.
I ended up upgrading to High sierra in the original ssd, after removing it and installing the OWC drive, I formatted it to APFS, downloaded Mojave using system recovery, and let it copy the information from the original SSD when asked. I was surprised at how well it is working, even though I have encripted the drive, it boots much faster and runs as fast or faster than before. Black magic is giving a write speed of 860 mb/s, read of 1075 mb/s. I failed to check the speed before changing the disks, but I remembe the write speed to be about the same and the read speed to be higher.
It does run slightly warmer, but the fan has not come on that I can tell.I am doing a battery life check to see how much it has decreased. I thing is worth the upgrade, double the storage, no discernible decrease in performance, running slightly warmer.
Hope this helps
