Guy's,

God forbid there are many good and not so good people no matter where you go as I'm sure anyone who has travelled a lot would know, it is however unfortunate these kids become de facto ambassadors for my country if not for a brief moment.

This, however should not give the message that's it is now okay to make blanket statements about a people or their culture as being inferior to your own. Even if made in jest, making statements like 'generally, pretty stupid' is not a very helpful or insightful comment to make.

Anyway, not to stir things up too much but please do try to remember that some people are very proud of the country they have built, just as Americans and Canadians should be very proud of theirs.

Well this finally got me out of my lurking status so perhaps a good thing..

Between The Croc Hunter, Shane Warne, Barry Humphries and Corey I'm ashamed to be an Australian...

What's wrong with Barry Humphries? The guy is a genius... and you've got Kylie, the very definition of a little talent going a very long way. :p

Not bad for a bunch of crims. ;)

Please don't get me started on that kid. He's an insult not only to Australia, but to everyone his age, which includes myself. But you can't blame him though, I theorise this is a local fad and that he and his friends are just weak.

For example, take a look at this (censored swearing so beware).

And I'm also a little scared of the generations that came before me after reading some comments on News.com.au. I summarised the general theme in another blog post and included a comment I made.

But doesn't this exact situation crop up every couple of months or so? I can remember hearing similar stories from the UK and the US - kid on his own, organises a party and makes the mistake of publicising it on MySpace or the like. Of course, all the gatecrashers trash the place and the neighbours are huffing and puffing all the way to the media.

It's part of our humour to take the piss out of each other. In fact it's not part of our humour, it's entirely our humour. It's all we know. :D

Oi! I'm from Adelaide, ya bloody gallah!

well, until the 4:18 mark, I felt like the kid did nothing wrong from what other kids do all the time - had a party which got out of hand when the parents were out. been there, done that. mind you, the destruction of property was never done to that extent....just minor accidental stuff.

I was also thinking the reporter was hot and even sexier as she started lecturing the guy. I wish I could meet her and get her angry at me and want to spank me, but that's not what this forum is about :) lol

BUT, after the 4:18 mark when he started to say his glasses were famous and that his party would be remembered and wouldn't take the glasses off....he became the little idiot. Totally made his apology insincere. what a doofus.

maybe i should contact that reporter and have her interview me... :)

My first thought here was "Vegemite".

Is that stuff really an export? I have yet to see it outside of Australia (thank god)

edit: And Taracat, most of the people saying things like that have been Aussies themselves, or at least have been living in Australia long enough to know it quite well, so what they're saying is obviously at least partially if not mostly in jest.
Calm down.

Oy! Aussies & Yanks are really the same people--kicked out of all the decent countries in Europe, and been causing trouble ever since! All in all, most the open and straight-up folk I've ever met in the world.

I've steamed with the AU Navy a number of times, and got pi$$ed in port with 'em, always a great bunch. Besides, having a professional warfighting force that wears shorts for a uniform, drinks beer on board, and gets up in the morning to "Wakey, wakey!" is all right in my book.

Always ready to toss a pint of Swan, mates!

This kid should be beat to death for being so stupid.

See kids? You too can be like Paris Hilton and get in the news constantly for doing stupid crap and not being famous or talented at ALL!

Well this finally got me out of my lurking status so perhaps a good thing..

You're right, but as a person who has travelled to over 35 countries, I must say that I'm surprised how racist Australians are. I used to take the train to Sydney to visit my (ex) girlfriend, but I had to start driving instead because I got threatened on 3 different occasions. I only took the train 7-10 times to visit my ex-girlfriend, so that's like......a 30% hostility rate. Maybe 50%.

And no offence to you and Mad Jew, but Adelaide isn't as tolerable and understanding as Sydney people. Brisbane is also quite tolerant, I find.. An Aussie recently explained to me that since Adelaide wasn't really formed by the penal colony, and was formed by the English and Germans, the intolerance (and some snobbery) is due entirely to religion and history (regarding the rest of Australia being formed by criminals. He has lived in Adelaide, entire Northern Territories (which he said is the most intolerant, ignorant place you can go in Australia), and southern Queensland.

I understand that some Australians are proud of their country, but I know quite a few Australians who spent 1 or 2 years abroad in the US, Canada, England, France, etc, and when they came back to Australia, they couldn't believe how other Australians think.

I didn't (really) mean any offence. However, you must admit that Australians are a bit too hedonistic, and don't really seem to care as much about manners and respecting other people. It's OK, because it makes the country seem relaxed, but sometimes, I find that Australians are too lax in their manner, and it sometimes comes across as being rude.

That, and the intolerance towards other cultures really does bother me, and threaten my safety.

I'm sure things are OK if you're a white male, but it's not OK for me.

That's a fair comment to make, and if I may say I had a hunch you may have run into some nasty people, but jeez try going into a izakaya (bar) in country japan - then you'll feel out of place ! :p

Seriously though it's genuinely sad you had that experience in Adelaide, but I'd hazard a guess that had you run into real trouble the good folk would have stepped up, as they would in any decent society - I just hope that you get to meet them before those become your only departing memories.

In Sydney the transformation from being a closed off cultural island to a modern and diverse city took place almost over night, hell my wonderful partner is japanese and I live a stones throw from china town hehe, it's just human nature to want to categorize people.. we all do it - just by saying this I'm doing it - but it's not always the case, just simply perception.

I really hope your traveling experience becomes more enjoyable from here, and for what it's worth I think this can only be positive discussion from all sides.

Side note the humour here is VERY sarcastic, it just needs a little translation every now and then :)

If someone ever starts a Wiki devoted solely to stupidity and vapid 15-minute celebrities, then maybe the kid can be in that.

As far as stupid Australians go, this kid is nothing.

Two words: Rupert Murdoch.

The only minority group that's truly tolerated are the Japanese, and even then, only Japanese girls are tolerated.

I'm not Japanese, but wow, if I was Japanese and female, life in Australia would be much better.

There are many reasons to dislike Rupert Murdoch, but one label I don't think you can pin on him is "stupid". You don't accidentally end up owning half the world's media and ruthlessly exploiting it for personal gain.

Be Serious.... Or Perhaps Even A Little Less Pathetic

Honestly? Anybody reading a forum quote or reply claiming to "Know" australians and believe they are "Stupid" as you so eloquently put it, can be thought immediately to be either American or British, only those nationalities are arrogant enough to believe they have the right and the knowledge to say something derrogatory to someone else and pigeon-hole/stereotype someone in such a way. And before you get all upset about me calling you american; CANADA IS A PART OF NORTH AMERICA - DEAL WITH IT.
Congratulations on being such a bitter person, i hope you enjoy being a lonely person.
cheers
Cass
