Yeah, as a Canadian living in Australia, I must say that Australians are, generally, pretty stupid. It's like the people here are pressured and massaged into living like modern people in modern times, and yet their brains still function like it's the 1980s, where you can be a little more sexist, a little more racist, and a little more of everything.

Australia is, essentially, a country full of people who go a bit wild because their parents aren't home.

Well that's a bit of a generalisation, because I'm Australian, I'm 17 (18 in a month), yet I have never, ever gone "wild", I have never done anything "bad" behind my parents back - never have I smoked drugs or gone to a party to get drunk (in fact, I have never been drunk, period).

I'm one year older than that idiot kid that the OP's articles refer to, and it's such a shame - looking at people younger then me, I think they're such screwballs. Quite honestly, every single kid in my grade last year at school wasn't into getting totally hammered and high; the worst offenders were two or three girls that were just really into sex. Same with all my friends from Perth that are my age; people tend to generalise that city kids are mostly bogans (rednecks) that like drinking - that's not true. They drink a bit, yes, but not enough to get intoxicated.

Yet looking at the kids in the grades below us, they just seemed to get worse every year. I remember when I was in ninth grade, the new eighth graders were just total idiots. When I was in tenth grade, the new eighth graders were even worse than the previous year...and so on. They love using terminology like "I'm gunna go get smashed this weekend man". Ugh. I've never hear anyone my age, or older, use those words. Thank god.
The main influence, at least from what I've seen from kids at my old high school, are those trashy teen movies. The kids in the grade below me were obsessed with those awful American Pie and other similar films - and their behaviour was, quite literally, exactly how people behave in those. It's as if they're so stupid that they actually think most teenagers are like that.
And then you get the ones that try and imply those terrible Australian stereotypes because they think it's awesome - it's just embarrassing. "Aww yah, I went roo shootin' last night, yah mate!". Ugh, just shut the hell up kid, you're wearing thin. We all know you're full of ****, you're too fat to haul yourself into "yor awsum ute" - oh wait, obesity is something that also isn't cool according to your beloved and oh-so-influential teen flicks

An Australian guy at another message board said something totally ridiculous in regards to that 'scandal' where Kevin Rudd apparently visited a New York strip club. He tried to convince everyone that "all Australians were having a beer to him, saying 'he's a bloody legend'!". Umm, no. No one in my family thought that. No one in my town thought that. None of my friends, not even those few addicted-to-sex individuals, thought there was anything "awesome" or "legendary" about it; it's just another example of a teenager being so delusional and caught up in trying to 'fit in' that they'll make themselves look like a total idiot.

Christ, if anyone younger than me understood my 'affection' for Apple (which, in other words, just means Macs and iPods are my products of choice), they'd insist that I'm just such a loser - such a nerd, with no friends, and imply stereotypes about me being a snotty nosed, acne-covered fat-ass with nothing better to do; which isn't true at all, I am actually none of those things. To be "cool" here, the most you can refer to Apple is "z0mg I gots a new iPod, I'm awsuuuum!".

What I'm trying to say is that Australian kids seem to think that what they see in the media is what life is actually like; that life is all about getting drunk, getting laid, shooting yourself up and that everything will work out in the end. They don't realise that most people think they're making idiots of themselves and that they're being totally ignorant of the consequences. They merely think that because they're pathetic idols can get away with it, they can too. Australian kids need to grow the hell up. And that's coming FROM an Australian kid.

Sorry about the long rant, I'm just ashamed to be part of this generation.

Honestly? Anybody reading a forum quote or reply claiming to "Know" australians and believe they are "Stupid" as you so eloquently put it, can be thought immediately to be either American or British, only those nationalities are arrogant enough to believe they have the right and the knowledge to say something derrogatory to someone else and pigeon-hole/stereotype someone in such a way. And before you get all upset about me calling you american; CANADA IS A PART OF NORTH AMERICA - DEAL WITH IT.
Congratulations on being such a bitter person, i hope you enjoy being a lonely person.
cheers

I guess anyone jumping to incorrect conclusions and making sweeping generalizations can be thought to be Canadian, since you name Canada in all-caps during your rant against Americans and British. Way to make an impression with your first post on MacRumors.

The last line from the original post:
Between The Croc Hunter, Shane Warne, Barry Humphries and Corey I'm ashamed to be an Australian... No wonder no one in the world can take Australians seriously...
would be the first clue that the OP is neither claiming to be American nor British.

Let me second Abstract's comment, thanks for playing. Please re-read your quote and see if you can find the irony. Abstract really did make it easy to find the correct bits.

Ugh, good for you. It is NOT worth it, even once. Trust me. I don't mind being a part of this generation, but I do mind people seeing this and assuming we're all like it.

What does it matter? Being "drunk" happens to a lot of good people. I get drunk every now and then and I don't regret it. It doesn't hurt anyone when it is done in a safe way. What happens is that young idiots like this take everything to the extreme without thinking of the consequences.

It isn't even a shame that this happened at all, because things like this happen all the time, all over the world. The big shame is that it garnered so much media attention.

FYI: Dame Edna = Barry Humphries

And she's absolutely brilliant!

As an Aussie I am fully aware of this, but many people only know Dame Edna and have never heard of Barry Humphries... especially the international audience.

And anyway... don't forget the Ray Martin interview when both Dame Edna & Barry were on

There's just more pressure to be 'a bloke', which is why Australians are so well known for their drinking. It also means that you need to be a bit tougher, which leads to other issues. And I've never seen guys and girls drink as much as I have in Australia. :D I've seen a few guys in Canada drink a pint in 2 seconds, but until I moved to Australia, I had never seen this many guys and girls with this skill!!!

Anyway, don't be embarrassed. There are lots of good kids. :) It's just the bad kids that get a lot of press.....

That's true, but there just feels like there's far more violence and/or aggression when drinking in Australia than in other countries I've been to. There are far more window smashing, fights in bars and on the street, stabbings, etc, far more often in Australian towns than in Ottawa, Toronto, or in more working class cities like Hamilton (steel town). Even the Aussie girls are more aggressive. Comparing Ottawa/Canada to Australia is just impossible.

I've said a lot of negative things, but to be fair, Australia is a great place to live, with lots of great things. :) People here aren't really better or worse than Canadians or Americans....just very different.

Hi. Thanks for playing.

Another entry in the "Where are they now??" one-hit wonders.

Sorry, but s/he leaves me cold.

Yes, and although I missed this thread at it's outset, I was startled at the hardness of the title.

No need for that.

I didn't (really) mean any offence. However, you must admit that Australians are a bit too hedonistic, and don't really seem to care as much about manners and respecting other people. It's OK, because it makes the country seem relaxed, but sometimes, I find that Australians are too lax in their manner, and it sometimes comes across as being rude.

I'll freely admit this one. In fact, having lived in the US now for 2 yrs, I still find it highly annoying when people are so damn polite sometimes, both in speech and actions. I mean, if me and a workmate are walking towards a door, you can open it and let them through first, or open it and go through and hold it for them to follow. Now perhaps the first is "more polite", but the second is more efficient IMO, and it's not like I'm going on a first date or something - these are people I see and talk to everyday and drink with sometimes too. Invariably if they hit the door first they'll hold it open for me though - ugh! Stupid manners...
