mine always corrects sidework to sodework....I don't even know what sodework is, but I'm going to look it up now. :)

I also noticed the difference between iOS 4 and the previoius versions. It has taken me a while to get used to the spellcheck as I sometimes try to select there and start adding letters like I used to, but now, if you do that, it takes the whole word away rather than adding what you type in.

Also, a major pet peeve of mine going back a couple of years is 'thus' and 'this'. I am not an attorney, therefore, the times I want to say 'thus', rather than 'this' are about 1 out of 100000000.

In general, I am dombfounded by what to me seems like an obvious error because a letter is beside another letter and yet it does not even consider that as an option on autocorrect or the new spellcheck. This is especially irksome with a short word. Lets say instead of hitting a vowel, I hit something next to it. Now a I have a short word with all consonants. SHouldn't a freaking computer not be able to instantly guess what you meant? This is really a pet peeve of all spell check, not just on the iPhone.

Ive had my 3G for a few years and Im an avid texter.
Im finding the new phone to be terrible at correcting and also feels like I gained a few pounds on my thumbs :p
is this a software issue?
I thought it was the new glass or something design wise.

The auto correction is so bad I'm thinking about turning it off. I'm just trying to balance out the scales though. How often does it work in my favor, and how often does it work against my favor? Hmm........

I'm glad I read this thread, because I felt like since I bought my iPhone 4 to replace my 3G my typing has gotten much, much worse. Glad it's not just me. I'm going to have to try turning the AutoCorrect off.

Results of Ken vs Jen

So, I have followed the advice of others on the forum and here is my experience on my iPhone4 (iOS4).

The first tip that did not work for me was to type the word into the Google search in safari.

The second tip I tried was to ensure to type the name properly and then 'x' out of the autocorrect suggestion 5 times in a row and iOS is supposed to learn the correct way.

While in txt I typed jen . I expected to see auto-correct change it to Jen like it used to in the old version of iOS. Instead it suggests Ken and if i hit space will auto-correct it to Ken. Not once did I miss type and type ken instead of jen. All the lower case jen that is seen below iOS suggested Ken and I hit x on the autocorrect suggestion. I did not miss the x a single time. Each time below where there is Jen the autocorrect suggested Jen (from typing jen) and I spaced and let the autocorrect capitalize the J like it used to.

Out of the 167 times i typed jen, 90 times the autocorrect got it right (jen to Jen), 76 times it tried to change jen to Ken.

It does not look like the OS is learning to me. Maybe someone sees a pattern in the below? I sure don't.

jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen Jen Jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen jen jen Jen Jen jen jen Jen jen Jen Jen jen jen jen jen Jen Jen Jen jen Jen jen Jen jen Jen jen jen jen Jen jen jen Jen jen Jen

BTW. If I add the Chinese -Simplified (Pinyin) Keyboard (Settings>General>Keyboard>International Keyboards) it allows me to add Jen as a word and the issue is solved. However, that shrinks the .?123 key to add the world key to swap keyboards. May not be a big deal for some but I now realize I use that key more than I thought and frequently miss and end up hitting the globe key.

You know what i am tired of? The god dam thing auto correcting something that is right already! It happens all the time to me, Ill type something in, it will change it to another word so i delete it quickly and retype the word again, of course my instinct is to hit the space bar and get to the next word so then it changes to the auto corrected word automatically, i do this 3 or 4 times before i get past it :(

There should be something in the code where it says that if you type a word in twice and keep it over the auto corrected word that means that that word is the one you want in the future!

Idk if anyone ever realized, but with previous iphones, you kind of had to touch the left portion of the key you wanted to enter. With this phone, it seems as if you just press the middle of each key.

Words that drive me nuts:

fir
mr
foe

I know there are more too. I wish we could access the dictionary and enter words we want, and remove auto correct words we don't want.

Typing "hell" and having it auto-correct to "he'll" regardless of how many times I backspace and re-type it is annoying as he'll.....yes that was my he'lla bad attempt at a joke....damn another one.

You can remove entries from the dictionary by the following:
type in the word
when the suggested word pops up, tap the "x" to cancel
repeat this 5 times and the word will be removed
(you can not except the correction at any point, or you will need to start over)

I'm not sure if this is only for custom words.

Keep trying. You need to do this five consecutive times. Also, excepting the auto correct resets the counter.

First :

Accept not Except.

Accept - To embrace; allow

Except - To exclude; deny

You want "accepting the auto correct"

Second - the person you quoted in your second post I've quoted above is having issues where they are unable to deny the auto-correct because the system is not registering them hitting the "x" on the auto-correct bubble. Therefore, they cannot deny the auto-correct any amount of times.

Edit iPhone Auto Correct

I have to say it's enough to make you want to shoot yourself in the face. I cannot describe the frustration I feel when the words "The" and "there" get auto corrected as tge and tgere. Can someone please explain to me how those two could possibly be in the dictionary to correct. They don't even exist anywhere in parts of words much less a word on their own. Makes me want to smash this iphone 4 with a hammer and really feel good about it. If it weren't the best touchscreen that we have to choose from I can assure you that it would have been out of my life long ago.

My only salvation so far has been to install the turn Auto-Correct "Off", and Check Spelling "Off", then English UK keyboard as someone suggested, then turn Auto-Correct back on.

Only then when I mistype the word "the" it doesn't correct it til I press space after the misspelled word, then back space, it then offers me the option to correct with the word "the". Same goes for "tgere". I've tried to train it by typing it in multiple times but I don't think the smart phone known as iPhone is not as smart as they'd like you to think it is. Either way, it's not perfect but the frustration is lessened a little bit.

Also, don't forget you can always go to General > Settings > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary

That will at least get rid of some of the bs misspelled/awkward iphone auto-correct substitutions.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I decided not to shoot myself in the face.

My iphone 4 has a voice that speaks every word I mistype. Can this be turned off. Very disconcerting!
