What does the included cable look like? Isn't it a power cube with an included lightning to USB cable?

Waitaminute

Am I reading all this right? Are they not shipping a lightning to USB cable at all with new iPhones or iPods? That can't be right. They HAVE to include a way to power up your device when you get it.

And $29 for that adapter is bull. I was hearing $10 rumors and thought "hmm, ok" $30? F that and I'm a huge Apple fan since 1995.

They are including a cable with the phone, of course.

Also, $19 for the cable isn't all that bad. Much better than buying an adapter... Although I guess the adapter would mean I can reuse the 4 or 5 old cables I have.

Why would anyone pay $29 to buy an adapter to use an existing 30 pin to USB cable when you can buy an entirely new lighting to USB cable for $19?

My car has a dock connector built into it (was a dealer-installed accessory). So I need the adapter so allow the iP5 to talk to the iPod interface equipment. Similarly, I have speakers with a dock connector built-in that i will need to use the adapter with until I decide to get a set of "Lightning" speakers.

(But that will be a while, as my 160GB iPod is still doing its job and I don't see that being made into Lightning version anytime soon.)

Now, I see why they have BILLIONS of $$$!

Really? They have billions because they make products people want to buy, not because they sell overpriced adapters. I'm not saying they don't sell overpriced adapters, of course they do, but this is not the reason for their success. I truly hope you don't believe what you posted.

Apple updated the description for the adapter on their website. It now only says video not supported. So nothing to worry about there for our audio devices, which is nice to have verified.

I didn't want to read all the responses in this thread to see if anyone else caught this yet, too many.

Wait, I thought these adapters were too expensive?

I think Appel's cabels are a bargin. HDMI cabels cost upward of $80 a kick for the first few years they were in use. It appears that millions of people feel Apples prices are acceptable since they are willing to pay the price.

Consumers control the market when it comes to quality, price, and delivery. If products don't meet consumer standards, the consumers simply will not and should not make the purchase. I'd love to own and drive a Lamborghini Murciélago, but I don't spend my days complaining on the internet that they charge too much and make a healthy profit.

That is fugly.

You can have it in white if you prefer:

This is disgusting. What are they doing. Apple reinventing the wheel again. What's wrong with USB3?

This doesn't even make sense... You're commenting on the change of the phone end connector by asking about something that would be on the other end of the cable? Or have all Android phones dropped micro-usb and I missed that?

wonder if they will be available in store before/after iphone 5 release. like to get an extra cable so I can leave one at work for charging, but didn't really want to pay $4 for shipping.

Apple cables always split and fray and the markup hike Apple put on these cheap to make cables is offensive. They offer no benifit to the end user.

USB 3 standard or mini is faster, stable and I've never had a cable split, ever...

I also have the same issues with the Mac book pro retina. The custom cabling needed to do the basic industry tasks makes a mess, is costly and is shocking. For example, i needed a fast transfer to my storage system accross a 1GB network. Wifi is to slow and no ethernet built into the computer. First I bought a USB converter for SG$68, this only works to 100mb network unknown to the Apple genius who sold it. Next I bought a thunder bolt to Ethernet adapter. Fuggly looking thing that cost SG$88. This allows the speed but at a costly price and days of messing around. In 3 months I've had to replace the connector once already due to a failing connection from the thunderbolt port. Horrid soloution all round. Poorly designed and manufactured under Apple control.

Apple cables = big fat fail.

I was about to buy one, till I saw tax and shipping get added. I then closed the window and said "**** it, I will wait on monoprice". lol

It seems more like he was referring to it as an example of why they are making this much money, not the main reason.

I think most people will buy these cause APPLE DOESN'T MAKE A CAR CHARGER!!

This is probably Apple doesn't like to touch products with a 10 foot pole that don't have reliable results. Car chargers give a irregular electrical flow that fluctuates as you press the gas peddle or turn on the AC. aka not good for your iPhone

Just wish they would grow a pair and make something better then Belikin..

Thanks for sharing. I agree, the lightning head does look small when compared to the college rule lines of notepad paper and the coin. It appears the two lightning cables I've ordered are still sitting in a container on the FedEx ramp at the Narita airport in Tokyo. Will have by Thursday nonetheless--just in time for iP5 :D

$4 is nothing. Besides the craziness it will be at the stores in the days after the release, I spend more on gas to get to the closest store and back.
I ordered two for my car chargers on the 14th, and they are arriving on the 26th. Not bad.
