This sucks. Maybe Apple has some plans for the iPod touch soon which influence this decision. Hope it is not just about Apple being cheap.

This is incorrect. Rev D (i.e. the 2010 model) is the first Air without backlit keyboard. It's the white MacBook which never had it.

Really? I could have sworn that it was a common complaint that it didn't have one and that they still hadn't added it on the new one?

Ah well, it's not a huge deal either way. As I said, I like mine but it's not a deal breaker (and it doesn't really make it more useful, I just think it's aesthetically pleasing :) ).

So maybe they went downward that way but not on anything big.

Honestly, the bigger thing that would sway me away from the macbook air is the amount of USB ports (I can't remember if it has only two or even just one port. Either way I want either a third USB port or a firewire port... I just want a third port dangit).

A very basic question.

Why should Apple not allow you to use iTunes gift vouchers towards hardware?

If I buy a friend a $100 iTunes voucher for Christmas. I pay $100 for it. Why should my friend not be able to go online to Apple and buy an iPod with that voucher?

That's the way normal companies do vouchers.

Agreed that against Microsoft Xbox offer, Apple's is very weak sounding. But you can always sell the $100 card for $80 or so.

I could sell the iPod for $180-$200 which is more than twice the price of that gift card.

You know what I find insulting about this? (Yes, insulting, despite how privileged and petty this may seem).

They are offering UK student £65. So whilst they inflate the prices of devices to match one another overseas (yes, I realise this relates to VAT and import duty, but the fact is overseas Mac users still pay more) they do not also inflate the value of the discount. Seems cheeky to me.

I was holding out to buy a new MacBook Pro, but without the incentive of the opportunity to sell the iPod (which is a practice that seems widespread), I am not sure I will be able to. Especially when the iPhone 5 has not yet seen release, and I am due for an upgrade to this also (contract coming to an end).

I think if the Air had never had a backlit keyboard in the first place, there would be far less complaints about the lack thereof in Rev D. I have never heard any complaints about that regarding the white MB, for instance. But the Air is a pricey computer, and it's easy to see as a downright provocation that Apple omitted the backlit keyboard only to save a few dollars on their part. Btw, there are 2 USB ports on the current MBA, which has always been enough for me (I use a Bluetooth mouse).

Perhaps....

They actually cottoned on to the fact that people were just waiting to buy the iPod and sell it on... How does that help :apple: as a company? They're losing sales of iPods from people who will do without a new mac...

It's the same principle as removing mobile me subscription and other software titles from disk format. People were selling the mobileme online for cheaper, hence apple were missing out.

I can't understand why people don't see this. Other companies would most likely do the same.

A surge in iPods being sold on eBay around BtS time is ridiculous. Why offer it free for people to sell on, if Apple can just do it themselves at full whack? They're in it for the money, but people can't seem to grasp that concept

Very interesting. When they sell their products, in the Euro-Zone we pay almost the same number as they US-Dollar prize (e.g. Apple TV: US$: $99, EU: 119,00€ - That's a lot more even post-taxes). But when it comes to vouchers for something then suddenly they go from 100$ to 75€.

£65 or so is pretty weak compared to the iPod Touch I only paid £19 when I got my Mac. Especially as I would struggle to spend all that on the Mac App store! I'd buy Pages and Numbers. I've never had to buy any other software in 2 years as there are so many free options made for Macs. I don't buy from iTunes as it is a rip off. I'd struggle to spend that on my iPhone on that App store.

However, UK uni students get ~14% off and a free 3 year warranty if they buy online. That's the best student discount I know of from Apple, so can't complain that much!

I've never seen so many people complain about getting something for free. Every year, Apple upgrades their products and often reduces prices on them, and you're all crying because you don't get a free iPod touch. You all think you're entitled to something. Lots of employers used to offer tuition reimbursement, now they don't...there's something to cry about.

I totally understand why Apple are not giving away free ipods this year, I mean why should they if most people will just resell them, it's not like they have a problem shifting their products!

However I do think they will be losing quite a few sales because of it, like mine. With selling the ipod I could have just about justified spending the extra on getting a MBP as it would have reduced the price down lower to similarly specced PC laptops. While I still want a Mac I just can't justify the extra expenditure, being a student and all.

The complaint is thats its a worse deal than last time. Sure something free is good, but its not as good as it has been, which for me is a little disappointing. I could have gifted the iPod to someone else.

You're still complaining about getting something for free.

This opens up a whole new dilemma though…

If Apple gives out less of a bonus than Microsoft, on top of its already overinflated prices and BTO options, what is keeping college kids, who are stereotypically strapped for cash as it is, aboard the Apple train? The iPod resales helped offset their high costs. Sure, they get maybe $50 off their purchase anyway, but that still doesn't compare to getting a better deal on an already cheaper computer by just trading the Xbox in.

Not to mention the Xbox is honestly cooler than a $100 App store card. M$ has turned into a Frat boy's "broski" and left Apple in the dust!

I love my 2008 Macbook 4.1 and I've upgraded the heck out of it. However, with quality vendors like Alienware dropping their prices and jumping on this promotion with Microsoft, I see very little reasons to stay in the Mac circle as far as computing goes. Maybe if I had $1,000 more I would consider this.
