This is a reach, but how many people with light bleeding are using a smart cover? At least with TVs, I know magnets cause that over time. Maybe since they're strong magnets, it's happening more quickly. I didn't have any on day one, but a little bit is developing on the bottom left. Right where the magnet is.

I noticed the light bleed right out of the box before using the smart cover. Mine isn't as bas as others, but the edge next to the Home button is the issue on my iPad 2 Wifi 32GB. Noticeable when viewing dark screen and I can see the slight discoloration caused by light bleed even when it's not dark.

This isn't a huge deal to me, but I did spend $600 on something I would hope wouldn't have light bleed. I mean, I had the first version of BlackBerry Storm and it had horrible light bleed. Don't expect this from Apple.

I'm not sure how this is relevant.

As many sites have reported, this 'yellow blob' is most likely the same problem reported on the iPhone4 when it was first released. It's the glue that holds the screen in place and they will disappear over time. Glad you are returning it. Apple stores should have 2 lines for the iPad, actually any of their devices. One line for normal people and one line for people with OCD. :D

I hate to say this but that is incorrect. The yellow blobs on the iphone 4 were from the glue used in the laminating process (The LCD to the glass) the iPad does not have a laminated screen, these yellow blobs are when the screen is dark and are without a doubt light bleed, there could be the slight chance of glue casing this, glueing the edge of the screen not a laminating process, but this is more likely caused by excess pressure being introduced on to the LCD. Maybe Apple went a bit too thin.

As promised in my earlier post here is a picture of my ipad 1 when i got it in Oct. My friend brought it over for NY so I couldn't get it changed. I put up with it and kept the brightness up. It was worse on a black screen.

But like I said earlier after the update to 4.2 it went away and I can now keep my brightness down low and no "footlights". I'm not saying its firmware for definite, could just be mine dried out if that really the issue, or the update fixed it.

As I said before has anyone tried restoring the ipad 2 back to 4.2 ?

My iPad 2 light bleeding is starting to go away. I wish now I had taken picture of before but it was like everyone else. But I can tell you most has disappeared we will see if all goes away by the end of the day.

I looked at my iPad 1 and it does have bleeding in lower right corner below home button.

I was adding a little back story to illustrate my frustration with the whole experience. I waited in line for an hour and a half only to receive a defective unit that I can't even replace due to limited stock, etc.......

I also disagree with your comment regarding separate lines for the OCD people. OCD or not, these defects are inexcusable and should not be tolerated by anyone.

I hope only the people with the bleeding problem are writing on this post...
I don't wanna believe there is no ipad2 immune to this problem.
Around the net I saw horrible ipad2 screens.
Please someone with perfect working screen say something!

I've tried numerous iPads, and they all have backlight bleeding. I really have no idea what the obsession is NOW with this issue. It was there in iPad 1, and it's the same screen in iPad 2 with the same issue. I've personally used seven or eight iPad 1s with the issue, and used four iPad 2s with the same issue.

I do, however, agree it should be addressed at some point by Apple, but they figure they got away with it for a year, so why not continue?

I cannot find any bleed on my original iPad. I have some on my iPad 2. Have not decided yet, what I will do.

Rest Assured there are thousands and thousands of perfect screens.

This is just how the internet works. Those with problems are the most visible in this kind of discussion.

I have seen no issues on mine in normal use so far but I also haven't gone out of my way to look for them by doing things like increasing brightness above where I normally keep it. In normal use, seen no issues.

Yes, but do y'all see it during normal use ?

Yeah, that's the downside to staying informed on and site/community like this. You almost feel compelled to look for flaws in any new product and chances are you will find them.

Yep, best bet is to just use your ipad normally and don't worry about it if you don't notice it.

I'm not bothering to turn brightness to 100% and check in a dark room as I'll never use the iPad like that.

If I notice no problems during normal use then it's good to go. Most likely time I'd notice it would be streaming netflix in bed with the lamp off, so that will be my only real test for the issue.

Or it could be that there's thousands that do have this problem, but they either don't care, don't even bother to go crazy trying to find problems, orr even realize this is a issue. Since most of us on here are OCD with our electronics, as we should be since we paid a big price to buy them.

But if you don't use the device with brightness turn up to 100% while viewing a totally black picture in a dark closent AND you don't see any light bleed while you use the device normally, then there really isn't a problem is there ?

It's like the antenna issue with the Verizon iPhone, I watched the video on you tube, the guy holds the phone with the heel of his palm sticking out three inches, and signal goes away. He the pops it out his hands and hold it like a normal human would hold it and the signal returns. So, no problem.

Another month or so and Ill be purchasing my refurbished iPad 2. Once you all return yours and they are repaired that is.

Agreed. I get not wanting defective devices like some pictured.

But I see no point in testing them out in conditions you'll never use them. Just use the device as usual and see if you notice any thing that bothers you. If you don't, great. If you do, then exchange it.

+1. If I turn my lights out and scrutinize my LCD TV powered on with a black screen it looks awful. If I just watch a movie or TV like normal, it looks fantastic.

Why did you not take your pad 1 back to the shop for a swap? From the photo that ipad is clearly defective.

This is exactly what is causing it, it's not an actual light leak, it's pressure on the edge of the screed. Mine has it particularly bad on the bottom right corner, and if i put more than the slightest bit of pressure on the screen right there the white area gets bigger.

This is the best theory yet of the root cause -- just my opinion though. But you're right -- press down on one of the "blob" areas ever so slightly and watch it get bigger. It's like the screen is glued to the glass too tight in some areas. If this IS the case, then it's not going to go away.

hey everyone,
i bought the 64gb att version and have bleeding on the right bottom corner near the home button as well... i made appt today with the genuis bar and they tried to say it was clue but showed them clue doesnt get worse when you press on it. they put in a order for me to get a replacement model was there for 10 mins max... said they would check out the new one with me when it came in. also said the screen like that is cosmetic when i think is bull a scratch is cosemtic not a bleeding led screen

I sold mine today locally since it had a little bleed that was a bother to me but did not bother the person buying it :).

So win for me not having to return it and win for the guy who was just happy as stink on a pig to have a 64gig iPad 2 .

I know everyone wont want to deal with that and i was not going to either but the more i thought about how many people are clamoring to just get there hands on this device no matter what, i gave it some more thought and decided to let someone else have it vs the return which ultimately would be returned to Apple.

i made a few bucks in the process for my troubles of being 8th in line at launch (waiting 3 hours) and ultimately not getting anything i was satisfied with in the end. I did not gouge the guy on the price i just tacked on $50 as i thought that was fair for me and him .

I will now wait till the dust settles and see what some of the new shipments bring.

I got 2 Friday both have the light leaking problems. One 16gb white and one black. I called the apple store and the guy said that's just how LCD are. I told him no, that's not acceptable when 10-20% of the screen looks like this. He said he exchanged his original iPad 5 times and ended up with one with minimal light leakage. Of course they don't have any in stock to exchange it with.
