another new term for apple to use: bleedgate.
next to antennagate and retina display :apple:

Well earlier in this thread I pointed out that I had issues with the iPad1 and wrote a letter to Apple, this thread is growing big, and I want to show you what I wrote to Apple 11. january 2011. And that my letter obviously only reached the trashcan ;o)

Hi Apple

I bought myself an iPad for Christmas, and it is a wonderful product, but I have had more than what you would call bad luck.

I have now just returned my fifth iPad, and to make a long story short, I will describe the problem of them all.

1st. iPad had serious backlight bleed issues, and was hideous on black background, all the following iPads I got did not suffer this issue.

2nd. iPad had a big scratch in lower right corner.

3rd. iPad had a bright pixel in center of screen, and a vertical line on top, where it flashed.

4th. iPad had dead pixels

5th. iPad had, what looked like a thumbprint underneath the screen, but it could also have been some metal smudge.

To be unlucky with a product once can happen, and then once again more rarely can also happen.
But when I get a product, that's not in the cheap end of the pricelist, and are able to get 5 bad iPads, then it must be more than bad luck, and may be caused by poor quality control.

I have no expectation on you doing anything in my particular case. But Apple have a reputation of delivering products that just work, and where quality is at the highest. This is not what I experienced, and to many iPads are leaving the assembly line in to bad quality, and many more may be returning their iPads in the future.

This is just a mail from an insignificant danish person, but history shows that if companies had listened to what the “little guy” said, the story might have taken another turn.

2011 is said to be the year of tablet PC, and to many problems on the iPad may give the competitors a boost in sale.

You could easily choose to archive this mail in the trash, and if I knew my company had everything in order, I just might do that. But what if “the little guy” was right and a problem you did not know existed was to blame ?

Kind Regards
A previous owner of an iPad

Nice Post,,,,,shame about your multiple issues..it sucks,,as Danish people are among the nicest in the world!!

So it seems all the people claiming they have no bleeding will either not take a picture -- or they do take a picture and we can see bleeding but for some reason they can't (lol). I just ordered a new one online and it says the ship date is 4-5 weeks. I'm hoping by then this problem will be solved.

I can see the bleed in your image, on the bottom and left. Here's an overexposed image to see it more clearly. But again, I can see it on your normal image.

EVERY iPad has bleed.

Wow. You must have eagle eyesight. I took it in the same room again and looked and I can still barely tell. Guess it's not a factor to me with such a small amount @ 100% bright. I use mine at about 50% bright and can't tell. Apple should hire you to be a product inspector. :)

I can clearly see it as well. Fat chance of Apple hiring an american to do product inspections in a chinese factory for low pay :p

i had a pretty bad back light bleed, not as bad at some in this thread, but enough that i noticed it when watching movies from the letter box. brought it to apple today and the genius put it under the counter top and saw it right away. He got me a replacement that was in a brown sealed box with only the ipad in it. I inquired if it was brand new and he said these are normally rebuilt or sometimes refurbed machines, but since the ipad 2 is so new he was certain that the replacement i was getting was brand new. i powered it up and id have to say its pretty good and much better than the unit I was returning. I inspected it further and home in a pitch black room and there is very little bleed, so little that in my normal usage I would never notice it. just thought I'd put give me experience.

he's looking at a picture, you are looking at the real thing.

If in normal use you see no bleeding, then you simply have no problem, and you should spend as little time as possible in this thread and as much time possible enjoying whatever it is you enjoy doing.

And if in the future something does start to affect you, you can always take it to apple then.

Have you guys noticed the different tones between iPad 2s?

One of mine was very warm/yellow. The other was cool, blue, and gorgeous.

Why so much variation in these machines?

My question is whether I should just return my iPad2 with bleeding or wait until supply catches up and see if AC will do a replacement. Kinda just want to return it/exchange it for a new one if the store has my model in stock.

Update

I just came back from the Valley Fair Apple store to exchange my 4th iPad with light bleeding through. The genius I spoke with did in fact confirm that they are now having engineers take a look at the ones that have been exchanged to see if they can alleviate the situation of light bleeds. He exchanged my 4th iPad with a brand new one that he brought from the back. I asked if he could verify if this iPad didn't have screen bleed, so he took it in the back and came back out with ANOTHER box. "That one also had light bleeding through, I'm sorry, we're aware of this issue and we're sending all of the exchanged ones back to engineers to see if theres something they can do or what's causing it."

He opened that box and again did the same procedure, he went to the back and came back out with a smile. "This one looks clean as far as I can tell. But if you see any light coming through at night, bring it back and we'll exchange it out for you. Sorry about all this." He even let me keep the extra chargers and ipod cables for all my "troubles", technically he's right though, all that gas spent and time spent to get something that shouldn't have had an issue in the first place.

HOWEVER! I should mention that this has been my best experience at ANY apple store. At the many apple store locations around the San Jose area, I believe the valley fair one is the best as far as customer service is concerned. I went to the Palo Alto one and they acted like it was my fault and didn't see the screen bleeding, probably 2 seconds away from telling me "you're holding it wrong." lmao.

I have an appointment in 40 minutes, i'm not looking for perfection this round...just an improvement!

I love the way the new iPad 2 screen looks, it's beautiful and more vibrant than my 1st iPad when side by side. The only thing that bugs me is when watching Xfinity or Netflix those damn yellow corners!!

I didn't buy my 1st iPad on release day, I waited 2 months and got a perfect 32gb wifi. Glad I bought my 2nd one at Target, going back in 60-90 days and pray for no bleeding.

Impressive Genius story, wish ours were that kind.

We have the exact same problem...wife screen is yellow, mine clear as a bell.

Afraid I would not have noticed had we not seen them side by side. Wondering if this may be why fewer are noticing this?

Does anyone know if they have drop-in appointments for issues like these? Do you have to make an appointment before hand or can you just walk in and say you have a problem with your iPad?

Depends on how busy the genius bar is that day. I'd say just book an appointment.
